I had to choose one or the other for my daughter a few years back. I was gonna surprise her, and have one delivered while she was at school. Then I thought, would I want someone chosing my guitar, nope. So we loaded up in the truck and went to a dealer. She played both, but one she kept going back too, and playing more. There's. Kawai in the house now, honestly, I liked it better too. A touch more mellow, softer tone. The Yammy was a touch brighter, or "more twangy" as us country folk say. And we get enough twang out of the banjo.

I didn’t want to pay for a brand new baby grand so I resolved to buy either a slightly used (5 years or less) Yamaha GB1K or Kawai GL10. It just so happened that the one I found was a Yamaha. It all checked out after inspection by a tecnician so she now sits in my living room. Without having tried the Kawai I’m not sure if I would have preferred that one but I got a great deal on the GB1K so I’m very happy. It’s beautiful and sounds way better than my old upright. I like to play a variety on genres including classical and pop and I think this Yamaha will be more than satisfactory for my needs.

I second this. I've played both and I find the GB1 on the bright side and lacking volume and richness. I much prefer the sound of the Kawai. Yamaha's more expensive pianos sound incredible but IMHO they've cut corners on the GB1 and it shows.

They're fine. They're small grands, entry-level grands of the respective marques. The Yamaha sounds a bit more subdued but at the same time a bit lighter-bodied and clear. The Kawai seems to be well sorted out. The bass is the area you lose out with the short grands.

The Kawai had a midrange of clarity but the harmonics of the bass and the high tremble do not mesh well together. The bass is louder than that of the Yamaha but the harmonics are not cohesive, the higher tremble fizzles out and does sustain its definitive tone for very long. I prefer the Yamaha because it's very singable and the harmonics from the bass, midrange, and treble mesh well together. The Yamaha sustains its notes very well. Yamaha really took this into consideration when building its grand pianos.

The Kawai sounds more full, lush, romantic, resolving, and really similar to the Bluthner in the Bass Area, Steinway-lush in the mids, and briliant bell-like tone in the highs like the vintage Steinway. The Yamaha sounds flat, shy, far away and analytical. To trained ears the Kawai sounds far superior!

Kawai's baby's grand pianos are much closer to the more expensive grand pianos of Kawaii than the Yamaha's ones, that's why I like the base kawai grand pianos

The way you have compared the both pianos just shows how passionate you are about just "sound". Absolutely love the effort you have put to compare the sustain of both the pianos...they are both awesome....i found the yamaha sound more natural and the Kawai a bit mechanical...but i do love the lighter action of the Kawai...it might lead to some other types of creativity....

Straight away I recognize you are the one who performed on BGT. For the pianoes, I like Kawai too. It sounds brighter with less noise esp. at the bass end. Yamaha is a disaster because they have not reduced the noise till now. I can figure out why many students hated their pianoes a lot.

Great video! I can’t help like the Yamaha more. I know that many classical pianists love the Kawai, and I get that it has this hard-to-describe deeper tone, but Graham looked like he was working harder to get the Kawai up to volume, especially on the last song. The Yamaha seems to want to sing. It’s like the Kawai has an EQ placed over it that dampens the mid-range and some high range a little. I would be frustrated playing a piano that I would struggle to get volume from especially in the mid range. But that’s my perception from a distance.

I have to agree with a previous comment that the Kawai has a thinner tone compared to the Yamaha's thicker tone. My wife compared the GB1 to a Kawai baby grand today. After starting with the Kawai, she preferred the Yamaha within one second after playing the first chord on the Yamaha. After playing the Yamaha, the Kawai sounded far inferior to the Yamaha. Can't say it will work out that way all of the time especially after the GB1 she chose was also clearly superior to another GB1 in the same showroom.
