Very nice and in-depth tutorials. One more usage case for Groups (1-2 and 3-4) is if you have speakers in different rooms. For example, I use MG20XU as an audio mixer for three different halls, one main hall, much bigger than the others, with direct view from control room, and two smaller halls. There are 4 speakers in the main hall, driven by two amplifiers connected to Stereo out (ST), two speakers in the second hall are are driven by one amplifier connected to Group Outs 1 and 2, and two speakers in third hall are drvien by one amplifier connected to Group Outs 3 and 4. We are using almost exclusively only microphones, and laptop audio, and by selecting buttons [1-2] [3-4] and [ ST ] we can easily assigns specific inputs (microphones) to specific halls, or group of halls (they are divided by removable walls, so any combination {1-2} {2-3} {1-2-3} is possible). AUX-es are also used in case there is a need for internet streaming, or conference calls, since we can exclude incoming inputs in order to prevent feedback loops-

@@GLBProductions I do have some questions though if I may - in a recording studio scenario I'm assuming that the monitor out goes to your amplifier/powered speakers and the main out goes to a hardware recorder or similar? @@GLBProductions i have a question if you don't mind me asking sir.. do I need to use D.I box ? The primary function of a DI box is the reduction of noise, not the protection of the mixer. I have a video which discusses this in detail, it may be helpful for you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLlyerZ1sM2veKM.html The mixer is unlikely to be damaged by normal input signals, unless you mistakenly connect the output of a power amplifier to one of the input channels. What tends to be damaged is your speakers 😉

Your videos are among the best and clearest you can see, pure masterpieces actually. What is simple and obvious to some people is not at all to others, and you can never explain too clearly. I have 4 active speakers, two of which should be at the other end of the room. Is there any good way to connect everyone? Has an old Yamaha 16/4 mixer.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Glad the video was helpful! If your speakers are active the easiest way is simply to daisy chain them together in two groups of two: left and right. Output from the front left speaker goes to the input of the second left speaker which is halfway down the room and same for the right speakers. Ideally you would want to delay the speakers in the middle but if your room is not too large you can still get acceptable results using this method.
@seriksson9721
@seriksson9721 4 жыл бұрын
@@GLBProductions Thank you for being nice to me, I mean if you could connect the 4 active speakers, 2 on stage and 2 in the far part of the room with 4 cables directly from the mixer table. And where in the mixer table it is most suitable .MG16 / 4. Thanks so much
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that too: most mixers including your 16/4 have two sets of main outputs: one on XLR and another on 1/4" - use one set for the front speakers and the second set for those in the middle of the room. Ideally the mixer should be positioned in the centre of room - centred from left to right and also from front to back. However this is not possible in most circumstances, so just get as close as possible. The idea is to hear what the majority of your audience is hearing.

@GLBProductions

It can be used as an additional aux send and is fixed post-fader, so not ideal for use as a monitor send as the monitor level will be affected by changes in the fader position.
@noSecretmusic
@noSecretmusic 3 жыл бұрын
GLB Productions thank you but if it’s used in that way how do the FX aux knobs work - do they become volume adjusters rather than Fx - sorry I’m confused with what Yamaha have done here ? Also I can’t seem to hear and onboard FX in the monitors of any aid mix ? Thanks again
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be confusing - the best way is to use aux 4 as either a post-fade aux send OR the send to the mixer's internal FX unit, not both. On this mixer you *cannot* send the internal FX to any of the aux sends, only to the main mix - this is a major limitation of the design that is not obvious at first glance.
@zetrel
@zetrel 2 жыл бұрын
First of all thanks for the tutorials, they are most helpful, and you are a very good teacher! I got a question tho. I have the Yamaha MG20 model without the FX. So can i let's say route Group 1-2 to outboard FX and bring them back on 2 channels in the mixer, and use the Group as a Parallel Compression BUS? Let's say if I press 1-2 for Group 1-2 on the first 5 channels, and ST (master) on those same channels and use the Group 1-2 fader to dial in the parallel compression back to either a stereo channel or 2 mono channels on the mixer? Of course I will bypass the Group 1-2 and not send it directly to the Stereo (ST master). I hope this doesn't sound confusing. Also the reason I want to use groups instead of Aux is because I use all of the Aux sends to other hardware FX boxes.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that - remember to double check that the return channel(s) is/are NOT routed to group 1-2 or you'll have a feedback loop.

Hi Buri - if you have a digital mixer then the best place to do this is by using the EQ on the main outputs: almost all digital mixers have a 4-band parametric and/or 31-band graphic EQ that can be used for this purpose. No extra equipment needed 😊

During the mixing, LR out light meter shows fine. Then, there is a problem, how much volume is going from individual channel to LR mix can't be identified by this mixer; only you have to guess from headphone. This cause unbalanced recording.

@@piratedprivacy9052 you simply plug in your break music (such as a cd player) into one of the channels and select a sub group. I have the MG12XU so it is similar. When you want to play the break music just activate the st button on the correct group. Either deactivate the on button or deactivate the st button on the active channels. Its a bit of work but you don't have the change the mix at all. I prefer the on buttons because they are lit. I wish the st buttons lit up when pressed.

I would rather suggest you use it the other way round ie. group all active channels to SubG1-2 & leave yr break music in one of the channel, unassigned for now. During show/karaoke, all active channel is assigned to SubG1-2 ,and SubG1-2 master fader set to unity and assign to ST. During break music, simply Deactivate ONE button on the SubG1-2 Master, either the On button / ST button (engage/assign ST of Break Music Channel as well)

this way, you do not need to be fiddling with so many buttons on all the channels (up to 7 active channels for 12XU, 8 total but 1 for break music use) just to deactivate them one by one... Try using my recommended way of grouping and you'll need to switch only Two buttons in Total, in order to play break music&mute everything else. hope that helped you in achieving maximum simplicity in yr show/karaoke....

Hi Bruno, is there a way to have a separate master volume on each master channel , left and right. I have the MG16XU model and 2 active speakers, one connected to master left and the other to master right? Many times it is required to lower the volume on one of the speakers, is there a way to do it besides panning each input or going to the speaker and adjusting the volume? Hi Victor, that is not possible on this mixer - you have to use the pan controls. If you need a consistently lower volume on one of the speakers the best way is to just turn down the level control on that particular speaker (if active) or amplifier channel that feeds that speaker (if passive).

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite - you set the average level of each signal to be around 0dB on the meters, not as close to the red as possible 😉 Assuming the distortion is from the input of the software, it sounds like you need to run the output of your mixer through a compressor or limiter of some kind.

I have one band member that wants his own custom mix separate from the other monitors. Instead of buying another mixer I was wondering if I could use the group output. But that also leads me to another question......at the last gig I had to use the group fader to boost the volume on the lead singer. He used a wireless mic. I had him on channel 1. I had st pressed in as usual, but couldn't get enough volume to match the rest of the band. They used they're own on stage amplifiers this time and where very loud. @GLBProductions 3 жыл бұрын
@@AmberSLancaster Hi Amber - the group outputs are less suited for use as monitor sends because they do not allow you to select the amount of each channel that you want to send to the monitors, unlike the aux send. You CAN use them in a pinch, but on this particular mixer if you regularly need more than one monitor mix it's worth considering an upgrade to a larger board. On the wireless mic - check that your gain is set correctly, and that you have already used up to 10dB of additional gain that is available on the fader. If you still don't have enough volume then you need to increase the level on your power amplifier or active loudspeakers.
