Yamaha Motor and ShinMaywa Conduct Early-Stage Test Flight of Small Aircraft

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. conducted an early-stage test flight of a prototype small aircraft at Fujikawa Gliding Field in Shizuoka Prefecture on September 21.
This flight was run as part of the joint research project for small aircraft begun by both companies last year.The aircraft tested was an R&D aircraft owned by ShinMaywa, the XU-L (Experimental Utility aircraft - Large type), which was equipped with an existing 499cc engine manufactured by Yamaha Motor.

Awesome! This is the best thing that could happen to the UL/LSA market. Yamaha! Please also release a 4 cylinder 1000cc and 150hp to finally break down the Rotax monopole! 🙏

How much horsepower? How much does it weigh? Is it two-stroke or four-stroke? Can it replace the Rotax 582?

It's 2 cylinder four-stroke engine they don't make two-strokes anymore. Looks similar to the Yamaha Phazer those engines weighed around 80 lbs. without the gearbox. I know the skytrax gearbox and Phazer engine weight in at 100 lbs. I think they are going to sell a light sport airplane not the engine. Doubtful they get into the experimental engine world.

@@georgegennuso You can get a used Phazor engine and skytrax gearbox. The problem with these is not plug and play it's something have to tinker with. If you're not into engine tinkering, I would stick with the 582 or go with a 912.

How many hp?

If it is the engine off of the snowmobile, it is 80 hp at 11,000 rpm. That is the only engine I could find on Yamaha's page that matches the specs in the press release. That rev count is why there is a gearbox between the engine and prop.
