How to change the Yamaha MT-03's oil. Also explained how to replace the filter. www.startersmot...
Step 1: Place the MT-03 on its sidestand, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to warm up the oil. Turn it off after a few minutes and let it cool down a bit.
Step 2: Remove the oil filler cap on top of the oil tank. Be careful of the exhaust, it can be hot.
Step 3: Place a drain pan underneath the engine drain bolt and use a ratchet with 17mm socket counter-clockwise to loosen the drain bolt.
Be careful, the oil can still be hot!
Step 4: Catch the oil in the drain pan, wait until it's finished draining. Tip the MT-03 a littie bit over the sidestand to drain a little extra oil which is still in the engine.
Step 5: Place the drain pan underneah the oil tank. Loosen the oil tank drain bolt also with a 17mm socket counter-clockwise and wait until all oil is in the drain pan.
Step 6: Remove the oil filter cover with an inbus bit that fits (allen/hex). Some oil will flow, so wipe that with a cloth.
Step 7: Remove the used oil filter element.
Step 8: Replace old o-ring from oil filter cover and the smaller o-ring still on the engine, rub the new o-rings in with a little bit of oil
Step 9: Place new oil filter and place the oil filter cover back in it's place. You can prepare the oil filter with some oil before placing it, I did not do this.
Use 10Nm of torque on these bolts. If you don't have a torque wrench, tighten them, but once they are tightened, do not overtighten them. Overtightening can result in leakage.
Best to use a torque wrench so you can set it at a max of 10Nm.
Step 10: Place new copper washers on both drain bolts before placing them back.
Step 11: Place the drain bolts again. This can be done with 30Nm of torque. If you use too much force, you can destroy the thread resulting in oil leakage.
In the video I use a torque wrench at 24Nm (could not set it higher) and a little bit of extra force. Just tighten it, but don't overtighten your bolts.
Once the bolts are placed, it's time to add oil.
Place the bike upright in a stand. You can also fill her up on the sidestand, but when checking the oil level, the bike must be upright.
Step 12: Use the funnel to add 2 liters (2.11 US qt / 1.75 Imp. qt) in the oil tank. Place the oil cap.
Step 13: Start the engine, wait a few seconds then race it 5 or 6 times. Turn off the engine.
Step 14: Remove oil cap again and add 1 liter of oil (1.05 US qt / ) or 1.1 liters (1.17 US qt / 0.97 Imp. qt) when you also replace the oil filter. After that, place back the oil cap.
Step 15: Loosen the bleed screw on the oil filter cover to let it bleed some oil. This is to remove
any air in the housing of the oil filter. As soon as it bleeds oil, tighten it again.
Run the engine for a few minutes and check for leakages. If you see one, turn off the engine and check for the cause.
Turn the engine off, wait 2 minutes then take out the oil cap to check oil level.
Remember: Bike must be upright, not on its side stand.
Checking oil with a dry sump engine like the MT-03 is a pain in the *ss, in my video it read as too low. This is when people start adding more oil and the engine gets too much oil.
I know I just added 3 liters, so I did not add any more to it.
Dispose the used oil at a designated collection site in your area.

Yep i put too much oil in it when I did my first oil change with the mt... :D I was like maaaan the manual is wrong the oil level isn‘t even close to the correct level... 150 km after that i noticed some oil leaking out of the top screw 😬 Then I removed some oil again. At least it‘s not that big of a deal if u put too much in a dry sump engine but nontheless good that u mention it and prevent some people from making the same mistake as me! :)

When I purchased the bike at a dealership (not Yamaha, but a Kawasaki dealership) I specifically told them how to chainge the oil. Guess what, they did not listen. The oil was pushed towards the airfilter box. That was a big mess inside the box. Had to clean that up and take about half a liter of oil out of the reservoir. The mechanic probably never had experience with dry sump engines and was too lazy to read the manual.

Hello, Internet says to add 2.4liter in video it says to add 3liters. When I added 2.4liters and let the bike run for few mins it shows low on oil. Should I add 600ml more? Thank you for your answer in advance
@MotoSnax
@MotoSnax 18 күн бұрын
I don't know why the internet says 2.4 liters. It is 3.0 liters without filter change. My info is straight from the manual itself. I also checked it for the 321cc version but then it is 1.8 liters. For the XT660X is it 2.5 liters without oil filter. Still no 2.4 liters... so I don't know who mentioned it, but that is wrong. It is 3 liters like in the video.

I stoped to put 3.0L on my MT 03 660. Nowadays I put only 2.8 L. The oil on the balance and the excess of oil on the air-filter never more appeared. I think that the Yamaha make a mistake to recommend 3.0 or 3.1 L for this bike. For the XT 660R, with the same motor, the recommendation is 2.6L.
@MotoSnax
@MotoSnax Жыл бұрын
2.8 L is fine too. There is no mistake in the manual. The XT660 has got the oil reservoir inside the frame. the MT-03 has a separate oil tank in front of the engine. That is why the XT needs 2.6L.

Hey! I want to change the oil and oil filter on my Mt 03 in the next few days. I forgot to order the copper rings for the drain bolts and also I didnt order any rubber rings. I wouldn't want to spend an extra 5 Euro for shipping on Louis to get them. Do you think I can do this Oil cahnge without replaying any Copper Rings or Rubber bands? the last oil change was 5 months ago at a Yamaha Dealer. Kind regards
@MotoSnax
@MotoSnax 3 жыл бұрын
Best is to replace both but if they have been replaced about 5 months ago you can give it a shot. Worst thing that can happen is that you will have minor oil leakage. Just check it a few times after changing if it is dripping oil. It it does not leak you are OK. Not everyone replaces them each oil change but if you want the perfect oil change you will need to change the washer too. :)

Yamaha recommends 10w40 oil, but it probably also depends on where you live. I bought a cheap brand motorcycle oil and it worked well with it. This engine isn't that demanding like supersport bikes with a lot of power.

+Vincent Lundh Thanks. Every 10.000km (6250 miles) or at least once each year. Which ever comes first. Usually I do it before I store the bike for the winter (I don't make 10.000km per year on the MT-03 because I ride on many bikes).
@jonebm
@jonebm 8 жыл бұрын
I've had my MT-03 for two years, but I've only ridden 4000km. Therefore, I have not changed oil nor filter. It is my first bike, so I am accordingly noobish. I realize now that I should get right out there and change them both, which I will (thanks for helpful vid). But what are the downsides of NOT changing oil (and filter) every year, even if you do not ride very much? Thank you in advance.
@MotoSnax
@MotoSnax 8 жыл бұрын
Oil will get dirty even if the filter will filter out most dirt, it will clog at some point, letting dirty oil pass the filter. Also additives to oil will wear out so it won't lubricate as it should. Next to that oil is hygroscopic, so it will 'attract' water/moisture, so water will also be in the oil, giving less lubrication. No worries yet in your case, but after two years it would be nice to swap the oil and filter.

Does the oil have to be a 4t-oil? Or if is 10w40 (gasoline engine) oil OK?
@MotoSnax
@MotoSnax 5 жыл бұрын
Make sure it is motorcycle oil, for four stroke motorcycle engines. Car oil is different. I would only use car oil if the oil level of the engine is so low that you'd wreck it if you didn't add anything to it to lubricate. But then I'd replace it as soon as possible for motorcycle oil.

Ah that is nice! Procycle oil will do as the MT-03 is not a high powered engine. I never had any problems with the bike after replacing the oil with Procycle oil. But I would not know if I would use it in a Yamaha YZF-R1. But that might even be no problem. Brands sometimes have higher prices to make you think it is a good product. Maybe Procycle oil is produced by Castrol or Motul or who knows.
