1. You can't port speakers that are designed to be sealed. Ported design requires quite different woofer parameters. 2. Based on the measurements of the individual drivers of this speaker I've seen it requires 3rd order filters for all drivers at about 1.6 kHz and 6 kHz instead of just two electrolytic caps that it has from a factory. And on top of that it might benefit from a rejector filter at about 13 kHz for tweeter and midrage drivers. So it's quite a bit of work.

@IliyaOsnovikov
@IliyaOsnovikov 8 ай бұрын
@@jackdale9249 It's not that simple and would take a few hours of work. And in order to design a crossover someone would need to have .frd and .xrd files of individual drivers measurements. Then crossover can be designed in Xsim or a similar software. The measurements I've seen from one Russian blogger (Azvuka) were just pictures the frequency response charts. But full data I believe is available to his paid subscribers only.

I bought a pair and added three-way crossovers, dampening material to the enclosures, and binding posts. I replaced the mylar tweeters with soft domes and the cheap midrange drivers with higher quality midrange speakers. The speakers sound much better. The total project cost $300. In my opinion, it's better to find a pair of speakers on sale for around $300 by Emotiva, Elac, KEF, JBL, etc.

I bought a used pair of these last week for tinkering with. There's a few resistors glued to the back of the terminal, and the 8" woofer is 6 ohms while the rest are 8 ohm, so they do need a 3 way crossover. Luckily, the two I had on hand were 800Hz/3500KHz 12db/oct, and worked out well. My nephew said they sound like the 90's, which gave me Yamaha NS-10 flashbacks, so I gave them to him.

I got these speakers for Christmas around 2005 and have been my primary speakers in almost all the time through now. To the point of the video, strengths and weaknesses are spot on. The "crossovers" are a weak point and lack of fill in the cabinet. I modified mine a while back with new crossovers and got the calibration right (after making the brightness even worse on the first go) then filled the cabniets. Separation is immensely better and improved the clarity (I like neutral sound) and since these surved for home audio and music was a sweet spot. To note these are wall mounted which also helped a lot. Total I am less than $100 into these is almost 20 years.

They have a frequency response of 50 Hz 11khz and sound great, my question is how can these sound so good with just 11khz?? Yes they are top end shy but never seem to be missing anything? Just enjoyable! Just interested to know about this Frequently response!

I accidentally got them and (although there’s a listening room with highly appropriate here not very expensive but quite decent system) I happened to lllove these Yamahas too. My guess they will sound best in a small room for casual listening - I found bass nonexistent, but otherwise the sound is very much enjoyable - crisp, detailed and full of fun. There’s definitely something in them not only for tinkering.

I purchased these for my games room specifically because they are shielded and needed a pair of bookshelf speakers to sit next to my crt setup without getting the rainbow magnetic interference on the crt tube. I agree that they are a bit harsh on the high end and the midrange seemed to have less presence compared to the bass and high frequencies. Will probably install a crossover to suit these to taste. Are they ok? Yes. Could they be made better by modding them? Most definitely.

I sold my freestyle bike (87 GT Pro Performer) to buy these freshman year. I think they were the NS_638's back then. Would definitely rather have the bike back. They weren't too bad paired with a 10" powered Kenwood sub though. Moved on to Paradigm Titans a few years later that were worlds better. Hell my brother still has them as the mains in his living room 20 years later.

3 way awesome . Bought a pair a year or so ago broke them in playing music while I was gone took about 2 weeks sounded great . Careful if you put them on a smooth surface they'll vibrate off. I ported the back with a 2 inch hole saw that helped. Sad news one blew within about 7 months to cheap to go through return mess. Do I recommend? For the money sure if they didn't blow out.

The problem with trying to hotrod these home theatre speakers is that the voice coils can’t take much extra stress and the suspension dampening is tight. My solution to the problem was simply to buy two more of them cheap, and that immediately doubled the output Without raising distortion. Mine have lasted for 15 years with no problem, But I don’t try to blast them & I also have a subwoofer. They are really smooth speakers at appropriate volumes, but not audiophile quality speakers.

I've had mine for about seven years. I paid $60 new for the pair (on sale) and these are incredible for that price. I use them primarily as my computer desk speakers and use they at close distance and don't really notice any many imaging issues with the tweeter placement. They are great at both low volume and when cranked while practicing bass on Rocksmith, combined with an old Cerwin Vega sub and old STR-DN1040 receiver. They have held up well over time.

I've been using the boxes for a pair of these for decades now. I've got hand customized 8" full rangers in mine and I'm using one of caps from the original crossover to pass a B&G Neo 3 PDR as basically supertweeters. Sooo, what I'm saying is that these were bought to be the living room stereo because they were the biggest thing I could get that would pass WAF, and then I modded the crap out of them. They were listenable for TV and movies in their original form, but I almost immediately started tinkering. They really only have two caps in their stock crossover. I forget the values. The woofer is running filter free (its actually a pretty good driver through about 5K), and then there's like a 2uf cap on the mid and a 1uf on the tweet. There's no way this is anything but a cheap approximation. The first thing I did was disconnected the mid, and it was already a much better speaker. Anyway, yeah, being a tinkerer's projected, yes. Big box. 8" driver which is not normal for even large bookshelves these days, so lots of room to work. Lots of easy things to make it better for little money (disconnect mid, cross brace with dowels or whatever, damp and or stuff cabinet, etc.). Just this little bit makes them easily twice the speaker they start as. With what I've done to mine, well, I've been running them in my living room for a bit over 20 years without upgrading anything, except for finally upgraded from my second ever home theater receiver which I ran for probably 18-19 years with a Topping MX3. I never watch shows with my family or listen to the music my wife plays in the living room while she works or works out and think that I need to make a change. That's what my desktop rig in the basement office is for ;-p

Before I knew about the Sony's I picked up a pair at $80 for my surround setup. Honestly, I like 'em for that price. I see the poppin' vocals as a feature rather than a bug. Alot of movies and prestige tv have a theater mix with the dialogue pretty low, so I try to get speakers that help compensate at lower volume. It would be nice to watch with the sound cranked, but the rest of the family doesn't appreciate it.

I wondered when you were going to review these. I was a little afraid you would because they’re not perfect, but I don’t use them for critical listening. I just have them hooked up to a little tube amp in a bedroom for occasional, indirect music listening. As you said, they’re fine for that. I never really crank up the volume, but I do appreciate their bass range. I’ll probably hook them up as TV speakers eventually. Right now, I’m using the Sony SS-CS5’s for that, and they’re decent. The Sony’s are the best speakers I currently own, so obviously I’m more of a budget listener. Thanks for the review, Randy.👍

I own 4 of the Yamaha NS-A738 which appear to be exactly the same speakers in blonde, with black cones and black trim. I actually bought these at $88 from RadioShack, about 15 years ago. They have withstood the test of time, and it doesn’t appear that Yamaha made any real physical changes. However, I find exactly the same deficiencies in them with regard to rez freqs in the human vocal range. These speakers have caps for the hi pass, but there is no low pass filter. They are very efficient, and so I believe that I can turn them up louder and louder, but I cannot without distortion. Up until that point they sound very smooth. Then phooie! They stink on ice. But I have 14 other boxes on the system, Housing 27 drivers, so I never really need to turn them up loud.

I recall, about 20+ years ago, that Yamaha made some pretty good sounding 2.0 music speakers. They sold thru now-extinct bricks-and-mortar audio stores, and prices were appropriately high for the market (but reasonable for their quality). And then they disappeared from that market. Yamaha still appears in the home theatre market, but we don't hear much from them there, either. Perhaps they are a more important player in Asia. [Aside: Yamaha's pianos and motorcycles are highly regarded, even today.] I recall hearing a pair of the old-style Yamaha speakers in a custom hifi store in Ann Arbor. They sounded very true to the source, but were priced well up-market for that class of custom system buyers. Unless they have forgotten (?), Yamaha used to know how to make good music playback equipment. Alas, really good speakers have high factory costs (ask Andrew Jones). But you clearly identify these as third rate. No argument, there. As to tinkerers, yeah, you might make something of them -- if you toss out the box, replace the crossovers, and possibly junk the mid-woofers. That's not much of a starting point, is it? Bracing a 3/8" to 1/2" MDF box to eliminate massive resonances would be quite the chore, eh? Thanks for this. Sending them back for a refund seems a reasonable option.

no, no the problem with the port is that it will kill the "bass extension" in exchange of boosted dBs in some area in the frequency spectrum which is the more commond sound that we are used to listen... i would fill the cabinet with glass fiber and also strength the cabinets with wood sticks also this is a pseudo 3 way design each mid and tweeter have a different capacitor but there are no coils that control the mids (not the woofer as well), so both mids and tweeter works like one so a better croosover is a must

I realize that at this low price point, this would be tough, but for much better imaging, the tweeter and midrange should be mirror image - as you mention. The cabinets are likely very problematic, and could certainly contribute to the peaky upper midrange. A YUGE and important mod would probably be build a separate chamber for the midrange - if it isn't already in there.

@@IliyaOsnovikov Okay - that would be better than having the midrange share the same space as the woofer - but it would be a very small resonance space for the midrange, and there will be a fair bit of sound reflecting back out through the midrange cone.

@@NeilBlanchard Well, this is a cheap loudspeaker. I've seen the same design in large 3-way speakers of various rack music systems of yearly 90- by all major brands. BTW, this Yamaha midrange has a resonance frequency of about 800 Hz and a first order high-pass filter at about 3500 Hz.

I replaced the factory mids with some closed-back midrange drivers and installed 3-way crossovers at 850/4800. Big improvement, now that the woofer is allowed to be a woofer and the tweeter is reproducing more of the high frequencies.

Hi Randy, good idea suggesting to make these into a project, but for those that may need help with it, say for those that only want to go halfway on it, they may be able to get some help from "GR-Research" for the cross-over and tips on bracing the cabinet and polyfill, etc... I think he once mentioned that some kids (from a school) followed his "u tube" channel and did a few projects involving his speaker-kits, maybe you guys could set something up like that for these things.... that is if you haven't taken them outback, blindfolded them, tied them to a pole and shot them yet. That is one way to put portholes through them thou... anyway it seems unlikely that he'll get a lot of orders for a kit for these things...but you never know ...stranger things have happened, good example, just look at ower last four years!

I rock out with these in my large garage when i'm working on things. They sound pretty good and work better in a large space. Randy probably heard it in a small room or this is a bit of a unfair review. The Klipsch RP600M that he raved about is a sht bucket in comparison to these Yamahas. I had it....and got rid of it ..
@kohnfutner9637
@kohnfutner9637 3 жыл бұрын
@@wa2368 I find that ridiculous for anyone to believe without you providing some proof to backup such hype. I'm quite sure these yamaha are nowhere near capable as the klipsch. I'm assuming if a word you said is true it is basically that you mismatched the klipsch with some cheap, most likely antiquated, receiver/amp that the cheapo yamahas mated better to in some ludicrous speaker placement experiment in your garage. Undoubtedly you probably think the acoustics in your garage are not a problem? I even call to question what sound it is you like: maybe you're in the "louder / bassier is always better" crowd that like to belittle audiophile speakers because you have damaged your hearing with actual sh*t bucket speakers.
@wa2368
@wa2368 3 жыл бұрын
@@kohnfutner9637 Both the klipsch rp600 and the yamaha belong in a garage for loud partying . Expect no better refinement from the klipsch when you crank it up except that the klipsch is a sht bucket at its price. The Yamaha is forgiven because it is only a 120 bucks. A lot of older 80s etc rock/pop got mixed with cheap Yammy monitors. I am beginning to see this speaker's appeal for that stuff. This same speaker has been sold for 20 years and its predecessor for almost 30 years which means a lot of folks like it. If you want "proof", lol, fk your proof. Get it (it is dirt cheap), put the yam and the klipsch next to each other in a 'large' space, crank it up, decide for yourself and return it.

Bought a pair about 4 years ago, for a spare system. The "3-way" and 8" woofer drew me in. I paid $129 with free shipping on Amazon, so I felt I was getting a deal. After breaking them in for an extended period, only to find that they still sounded awful, I sold them on Craigslist. They had poor soundstage....music was coming from 2 little, resonating boxes. They were a waste of time & money.
