Hi so the P125 and the P145 are the same price. Which one would you recommend? The older P125 or the newer P145? Any assistance appreciated. Thanks in advance
@PianoTone
@PianoTone 6 ай бұрын
As long as it is the P-125 and NOT the P-125a then I would recommend the P-125; the P-145 is newer and it has been upgraded to a similar sound engine as the P-125 uses so the sound quality should be close (I haven't reviewed the 145 yet but plan to soon); but the P-125 has more sounds, the onboard rhythms are super useful for practice, and the 125 has L/R line outs (the 145 only has a headphone out). But if it's the 125a, then I would recommend the P-145 (the 125a has no audio interface built into the USB port - the 125 does and so does the 145 and it's a huge feature). Hope that helps! I'm guessing that the simpler tone may work better on stage. I'm a big fan of the CF and the CF samples anyway. But I don't think the new P-225 model is really made for gigging so much as for home use. It lacks a screen, lacks a battery option, and the speakers now point out for use against a wall. At gigs you need upward facing monitors - at least the tweeters. I know because I own both a P-255 (not a misprint) and a P-121. I realise, however, that there are some improvements, but I think the P-121 still remains the best Yamaha deal.
@PianoTone

@@Zoco101 Would need to see how much "venting" of sound comes out the front, but I'm not a huge fan of downward or backward facing speakers TBH. They haven't announced a "P-221" (73 key version) hopefully they do. The P-121 still has the audio interface, they never made a "P-121A"; the 121 is a great portable option, and a great basic gigging keyboard if all you need is piano, EP and basic organ.

The end of the video was *EXACTLY* what I was wondering, the difference between the P145 and the P143, I thought it was key differences (the 3 perhaps being short for "73 keys") but the website says otherwise, so until they are released these are very confusing models. Also, I wonder if you can ask your Yamaha rep if there's a replacement coming for the MX series? I asked Blake on one of the Yamaha live streams for the CK model if the CK was a replacement for the MX and he, point blank, said "No", so I wonder if there really is a replacement coming for the MX.

These pianos are already listed on Yamaha Europe Web site but there is nothing official about their release in Canada (the only hint may come from the price drop of Yamaha P-125a). I would not mind a second (I have P-515) Yamaha digital piano (I really do not need what DGX670 or CK88 offer - I only ever use main acoustic piano sounds) but the short pivot of the key action concerns me. I would like to add that I had three digital pianos (and MIDI controllers) with PHA-4 action and although I initially preferred PHA-4 to GHS (it is too light for me) this action always developed a clicking noise after 4-5 months of intensive use. It was not as bad as Kawai plastic actions (that I really do not like) but it was nevertheless unacceptable for me. Thank you for your preview!

Hey i was wondering if you do a comparison of the standard action (ghs) and the newly released and updated ghc action, i find the kawai es120 and the p 225 very similar because of their action (the ghc and rhc). They both have a "compact" action, im really in the mood to choose a digital piano right now so just make a comparison i guess.

in your opinion, what is more durable between keys in P145 (GHC) and Korg Liano (Semi Weighted)? im looking for digital piano that is durable in term of key. no matter weighted or semi weighted
@PianoTone

The 145 (GHC) hasn't been out long enough to know for sure - the prior action (on the P-45: GHS) was one of the best built ever, and the GHC does feel just as good, but it is brand new. And the other thing to consider is fully weighted actions have more moving parts, grease. etc so a non weighted keybed might last longer. Hey thanks for the info! I tested a P-145 at the music store yesterday and compared it to a P-125A. I had never tested the old GHS before, so both were new to me. All in all, I have to say I liked the new GHC a lot actually! More than the GHS, although that one wasn't bad either. (Though I'm not sure how representative my action preferences are haha -- I don't like the PHA-4 at all, for example). Anyway the big difference is that the GHC action is much more cushioned at the bottom (which also makes the keys a LOT less noisy). It doesn't have that sharp bottoming like the GHS has at all. As for pivot length, they seemed pretty similar. Weight too (as in force required to depress the key). Key return speed seemed about the same as well, perhaps the GHS was slightly faster, it was hard to compare. Looking forward to hear what you think once you get your hands on one :)

That’s all great to hear thanks for sharing that info! I have had 3 pianos with GHS and they all feel super close but still slightly different too. My DGX-670 feels the best but I think that’s the heavy case it is in (I’ve never opened it but I’ve heard it is heavy because it has a heavy possibly wooden base); the action feels a tiny bit “sturdier” than my P-125 or CK88. Have you, by any chance, measured static weight needed to move the keys? Is it properly weighted? How difficult it is to press write keys close to the fulcrum? I received my P225 a couple of days ago, I purchased it from the Guitar Center and I am in California, I also have a DGX670 to compare with. I am really surprise on the improvements on the P225 and I am surprised that there are so few non store reviews for this machine in the US. I expected the key action to be not as good as the one on the DGX670, however it is much better, the down distance is slightly less, it doesn't have that bounce vibration that the GHS has, the touch is very responsive, maybe slightly lighter, and it has almost no sound when playing unlike the GHS which is a little noisy. I really like the GHC better than the GHS and not by a little bit, I am surprised. The sound of the CFX is better than what was on the P125, the rest of the sounds are the same. I thought the speakers would not be as good as the P125, but once again they sound much better, they have a more full sound. I also now feel the vibration in the keys that is similar to a grand piano which I don't have in the DGX670. The logo is smaller on the back and they removed the white print for the connectors. Overall I like this new version a lot better than the P125 and now I wish this action was in the DGX670. Now I wonder what everyone else thinks about the changes.

I also just got my P225 few days ago and I am wondering if the GHC is lighter or heavier than GHS. I want to minimize the impact on my hands so I would prefer easier to play keyboard (it is not a real piano, so I don't need it to mimic a real one). I would really appreciate your thoughts.

@vincentchandler611

@@niliev My opinion is that GHC is slightly lighter that the GHS. The huge difference is the noise, GHC is almost silent. GHS has a bit of a bounce at the end of the stroke and you hear it with a thud sound, you can also feel this bounce and it’s not how a real piano feels. The GHC seems to have dampened this bounce. So it feels a bit more “piano like” in that respect, but I think it makes it a bit easier to play in that you don’t get tired as easy. Also I noticed that the dynamics are a bit more controllable. I noticed on the GHS I can get about 8 levels of sound from the quietest to the loudest with each key. With the GHC I can get a few more especially in the quiet end. I like to play on the GHS keyboard and its one of the better ones at this price level. I do think they have improved it with the GHC which is hard to believe because it is more compact so intuitively you would think they would have to make some compromises. When I put the two keyboards next to each other and play on one then immediately play on the other its hard to tell them apart, however if I play on one for a day or two then play on the other you do notice that it is different. I suspect that the GHS will be replaced with the GHC in the future. The GHS has been around a long time, it time for it to be replaced. What I don’t know is what the build quality is or the quality of the parts or the quality of engineering.

Yeah it definitely surprised me they went that direction with the key action (I personally really like the Casio smart scaled action, but it was a hot topic online with many people disliking it). I’m not a fan of speakers facing back or down though, I wish they’d left them where they were - I had a PXS1100 and 3000 and really liked them (especially the 3000) but the speakers never sounded as good as my P125; might be necessary to save that 1 inch in depth …. And if they are copying Casio, Casio needs to do the same and start including built in audio interfaces (Yamaha has been doing it for years even in their inexpensive PSR-E series keyboards; it’s a massive amount of functionality Casio is ignoring - can’t figure out why) Anyhow will be super interesting to test these out once I see them! @@PianoTone Thanks for your reply. Interesting you'd say that. Speakers at the bottom or the back are probably becoming more common due to the quest for 'compactness', which itself is questionable IMHO. If anything, key mechanisms should also become *less* compact and increase the distance to the pivot point to make playability more even from front to back of the key (again, IMHO). As for BT MIDI, that should usually have *less* latency than BT audio, simply b/c it has much less data to transport. I was especially interested in BT MIDI since it would simplify the adapter situation for tablets/smartphones, and circumvent the USB host/device conundrum.

Wow that’s quite a difference; although the piano sound has been upgraded and the built in audio interface is a huge new feature in the 145; I guess it comes down to how the action feels. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

Just bought my P-121 for about €525. It's only got 73 keys, but it's much better than a P-45. Even the GHS action feels better to me than a P-45 GHS action. Are you sure you need 88 keys?

@@Zoco101 Awesome! 121's aren't easy to come by in Canada any more.

The bluetooth audio is a nice extra, and the audio over MIDI will be welcomed back by P-125 fans. I'm suspicious of the new action. Ambitious students need something nearer to the GH3 action, not GHS meets Casio compact... Even the GH action on my old deleted P-255 is sturdier and effectively quicker than GHS. How much does the P-225 weigh? And the P-121 remains unchanged? That's just as well, because it is fine as it is. There's no need to bump the price up with unnecessary extras. It might even have the audio over USB anyway. It's only a glorified entry-level instrument, so therefore imperfect, but imperfect in a very balanced way, and great for the price. As I've said elsewhere, I think the P-121 is Yamaha's best deal in DPs, and has been for a while. And finally, I have put my wallet where my mouth is and have bought one as a travel/backup instrument. It only weighs 10kg, and it fits in my RV. Only having 73-keys makes it a great travel width, but I don't need it to be any slimmer. I hope the audio over USB is still there, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

The 225 weighs 25 lbs so about the same as the 125. We'll have to wait and see on the action, I'm hoping it's as advertised and it feels like the GHS (I love that action); I've never played GH before . . . Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

That’s not good to hear! Is it through the speakers that you don’t like or through the headphones?

How do you compare the action of this digital piano (GHC) with GHS of P-125 and other Yamaha digital pianos. Have you, by any chance, measured static weight needed to move the keys? Is it properly weighted? How difficult it is to press write keys close to the fulcrum? Thank you, Michael
