The latest arranger keyboard Yamaha PSR-SX900 while it may not be the most technologically competitive, it does have quite a number of features which trumps the Korg PA1000, PA700 & the Casio CT-X range of keyboards.

All music keyboards need to be made for the keyboard musicians. Not for electronic engineer and high technology guru’s. They need to think about the musicians first. Yamaha is the best for doing that. Styles, voices, layerings should be the focus. Yamaha is #1

Hi Jeremy, I owned a Pa1000 of which I found it to be rather complicated and also as well stated, one needs to try to dig in to try to make it sounds like you wanted too. I bought this Yamaha PSR-SX900 as as you well stated, all sounds and styles may I add are absolutely mind blowing and can be enjoyed ready out of the box. I was just about to order the Korg Pa5X and as I was watching the demos I seem to realise that most styles seem to lack colouring and inter instrumentations which leave it sounds like simple drums and bass! I ended up ordering the Nord Grand and the Yamaha Genos instead as I see more sense in having the best of both Worlds. :). Well done on you review and be safe and well

After intermittently playing keyboards for about 15 years, I prefer great sounding presets right out of the box. I want to write songs, not tweak audio parameters all day. Too many editing features = easier to get distracted. It’s a conscious choice on my part.

I just enjoyed listening to your playing Jeremy. I was very thankful for your input as to the OTS function, the situation regarding importing styles from previous keyboards (More than likely meaning I'll have to reformat my SD stick and start from scratch) Look out PSR Tutorial I'm coming for a lot of help again. I'd already noticed how Yamaha has seemingly redone their styles for this SX900. They seem to be much nicer and fiuller than the previous ones were. Thanks again Jeremy. I'll talk with you later. Hopefully I'll have my SX900 by Christmas.

Aw man! I was just about to upgrade from my Yamaha PSR-S670 to a Korg PA700. Looks like I will stay with Yamaha and upgrade to the PSR-SX900 instead. I guess it will make sense to me as I've become quite accustom to how the operation of a Yamaha arranger keyboard works. Thanks for this video, Jeremy! It sure helped me make an informed buying decision.
@donofarrel
@donofarrel 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I did. I only had the PSR-S670 for 8 months. Then I saw the PSR-SX900 released. Believe me, it's astonishing. The vocal harmony is amazing with so much variation available (I like to sing too). The chord looper is great and you can try hundreds of styles without having to forever play the same progression. I input the whole song as one loop and just change styles to see which fits best to my ideas. The multipads are wonderful. They allow you to change the sound and feeling of a style. Yamaha have got it right with this keyboard. One day I might have some facility that I would like that isn't there currently. But I think it will be a while to discover what it is.

I have a problem with my keyboardists who often turn up and down the volume in middle of the show that messes up the input level on my mixer. Would you please tell me how could I get the constant volume level from the Yamaha PSR without stick the volume nob with a 3M tape :) Will the sub L/R output will give me a constant output level? Thanks, and kind regards,

I want to know if this PSR-SX900 can play external audio files such as mp3 and wav files from a usb so you can play along and be able to change the tempo and pitch/key? I saw another video on youtube of a Yamaha PSR-S950 that he shows this model can play external audio files like mp3 and/or wav files and be able to change the tempo and keys . Please advise. Jeremy, this was six months ago. Is the 'new' arranger keyboard you're talking about the i3? Certainly not like the original i3. I AM interested in the new EX20 and EX20SP keyboards though. They should give the DGX-660 a serious run for it's money. As to the foot pedal comment, the only thing I have to say about that is 'EC-5.' That gives you FIVE assignable input switches in one pedal board. By the way, I use my dedicated Fade In/Fade Out (most out) switch quite often Now, I have a PA800, which is what, fifteen years old now, and I can use the EC-5, two dedicated switches and two assignable sliders on that keyboard. That's pretty impressive for the age of the keyboard. EDIT: Unfortunately, I see they removed it from the PA1000. Can't say I like that, but it is still on the PA4X. I DO like some of Yamaha's newer samples, the Do-Wop and Vocalese voices you were playing are far superior to what I have on my PA800, and I think the touch sensitivity is probably better. OH GOD! I feel like such an idiot. Korg has removed the EC-5 jack on the PA1000. I can't believe that. At least the PA4X still has it. Other than that, my PERSONAL opinion is that while I've always liked Yamaha, and wouldn't mind having a new Genos or even the SX900, I still want a Korg PA4X76 first. I just think, altogether, the Korg is a better keyboard. Thanks for posting this.

Hi Jeremy. As always, unbiased, but methinks you have concentrated on aspects that will appease your few slightly disgruntled Yamaha advocates. I have the SX900, but have always understood the distinctions you have previously drawn between the Korg contenders and these latest Yamaha offerings. And here, the pivotal point you mention (in essence) is that the Korg PA offerings are really for a different market than these Yamaha keyboards. I prefer the SX sounds, they seem more realistic to me as the degree of processing seems realistic, but understand the Korg user's preference to be starting with less processed sounds, and the OTS Yamaha choices are far better than Korg. On your video, it's good to explore new design approaches and your new captions do look very classy, but I agree with Sri Harshaa, the very gimmicky transitions must go 😉, there are better choices!

hi Jeremy. I cant find any presentations on keyboards that can customise intros and endings. Im over the undesirable endings on most arrangers that dont suit me. Is there also a keyboard that allows foot control of the intro, fill ins and endings, also transpose or other needed switchings that reduces finger fiddling while playing tunes? I wont mind having a peddle for my left leg and one for my right leg. Why hasnt any manufacturer thought of utilizing both feet as well as both hands to control an arranger for less stressful playing.... Yes we use both feet and hands to drive a car.... Why not share responsibilities with our 4 sets of human digits for maximum body exercise and dexterity and really full on body control of thhe complexes of an arranger one man band keyboard. Ive had this notion for years now since im passionate about one man band playing....! You can shed some light on this as you breathe keyboards and are passionate about great ideas by manufacturers....!

AFter watching lots and lots of videos I opted for the Korg Pa1000 over a year and a half ago. I don't regret it although it is true it isn't the most user-friendly of keyboards. But the Yamaha's price definitely played against it. And also that it was not as powerful and felt really like a disadvantaged little brother to the Genos whereas the Pa1000 doesn't suffer too much from a bully big brother.

I tried both keyboards at a few reputable musical instrument stores. I also heard someone playing on the Korg PA1000, although it has nice sounds. The quality of the keyboard was an immediate turn off when I personally tried playing on it. The plastic keys were very cheaply made, it felt exactly like my neighbour's $29.90 keyboard from Kiddy Palace. It was squeaky, the keys would tilt/bend like on a tight rope and the release of the the key was a little annoying with the plastic hitting plastic type of noise. The staff assured me it was not spoilt, damaged or worn-out in any way. That was not the quality I expect from a Professional Keyboard Company, especially when a few thousand dollars is involved. I was still contemplating with Yamaha' offering, the keyboard was quite good, but the price was steep for the functionality section as what Jeremy said. Advice would be great.

Yes I agree about the Korg pa1000. I’m a pianist and I found the keys to be terrible. Like a $29.00 toy keyboard indeed. Plasticy soft spongy action with no feel at all. I can’t control my playing on this. They call it “semi weighted”! That’s a joke! It’s a spring action. And a cheap one at that. This thing is so complicated I’m giving up and selling it. Can’t deal with the complexity. I just want to compose songs, do arrangements and play good sounds. Sounds are ok, but my old Roland E500 was superior in many ways compared to this complicated toy.

urgggg, you've upseteddd me, I'm using Korg PA1000.....but somehow I hit the "liked" button. Imho, many Vietnamese used Yamaha brand because it is very easy to navigate...but I made the call to switch 5 years ago to Korg, .....very challenged for some folks but overall, I don't regret. I would buy the SX700 as the secondary keyboard but still keeping my PA1000. I admired your unbiased presentation.

Ketron Jeremy! Ketron from italy has got really close, but no speakers, no batteries operation, and the out of range pricing makes it a star up in the sky.....

The Reference Manual from Yamaha is only available as PDF download. Sometimes you look something up in the owners manual, you’ll find it, but all there is, is that they say please look it up in the reference manual, this is cumbersome: Bad idea Yamaha 👎 Btw. Jeremy, which Velocity setup do you prefer? Soft 1/2 or Hard 1/2?

Firstly these are probably out of the box demos. Secondly the SX range is newer technology. And as with any arranger once you spend time editing eq settings etc they sound a whole lot different.

I like your reviews. I think korg offers more in overall but it is not a user friendly brand. I tend to prefer Yamaha because I know how to use them.

Hi Jeremy... Thanks for info on new korg models also.... Leads me to believe there will now be more in EK range if not Italian/PA OS ... Had it confirmed today that yes, there will be more in the EK range ( or why bother with the new prefix) launching at US trade show January ... Can't wait... I love the EK ...we just need a way to manage stuff onboard...then it would be a great arranger!!! Thanks ... Keith
