It's quite easy (albeit sad) to understand the demise of sportbikes: Aging riders moving on to more comfortable machines; ADVs and naked bikes being more and more capable when it comes to performance; Euro emission regulations killing in-line 4s; increasing cost of living - people in general have less available income and motorcycles are very expensive toys; and finally, in a society obsessed with being safe and secure, a race replica machine is not something most people are into anymore.

The current xsr900 (which I own) makes more power and is 30 pounds lighter than the original CBR900RR, and yet the XSR900 has shockingly low insurance rates. In the absolute sense, the XSR900 is frighteningly fast, both on the street and on the track. Thus, buying a sportbike which makes 80 more HP is, by most reasonable riders and even the nutters out there, kinda pointless. A bike 1/3 the cost is probably the choice most riders make.

I guess you could say I'm an aging rider. At 75 years old i find my ZX-14r very comfortable and the way the industry is going, i will keep it until i can't ride anymore.

Pretty easy to understand yamaha didn't wanna deal with euro emissions and that's why we're getting the r7 and potentially the r9. There is nothing to do with anything else. No company is gonna wanna discontinue what's working for them.

Right before Kawasaki came out with the ZX4RR I had bought a 2021 MT07. I really enjoyed it but I was missing the sound of the inline 4. I owned a Triumph Street Triple for about 6 years along with a Bonneville. I found myself riding the Bonneville more after awhile. So I traded the Street Triple in for a cruiser. I loved the sound of the 350 degree crank parallel twin sound with Predator mufflers. But the parallel sound of the MT07 didn't please me at all. The bike was great but the romance wasn't there. Since getting the ZX4RR, I want to ride it all the time. The joy, it brings me is beyond common since but I will be enjoying it for a long time. I thought about a ZX6R but I don't think it would be more enjoyable to me. Speed isn't everything. I'll never get the 4RR to it's max. One happy guy.

Its definitely sad however, honda has re introduced the cb600rr in europe for 2024. Granted its not a 1000, but at least some brands are willing to make them. As people stated too, inflation, cost of living, crazy taxes, just a rough time and its a shame these companies are moving away from race bikes.

Pretty excited to see what they come up with for the r9. I really like the cp3 motor as well and I think it'll be a nice replacement for the R6(not the r1). I do hope they boost the power numbers with the r9 though and put it in the realm of the gsxr 600 and Kaw 636. If they do, the added torque of the 3 cylinder over the inline 4 will be a very welcome perk.
@JoeStanek-vu7rl

You do realize that the MT09 will beat the R1 to 100mph right? With hotter cams and a little more compression the CP3 could easily put out 180hp.

@@JoeStanek-vu7rl I do and I 100% hope they boost the numbers. I also realize they need to meet stupid emissions regulations so I'm not getting my hopes up for big numbers. I would love to see 140-150hp though. Put something in the gsxr 750 and the panigale v2 competition bucket

To sum it up: the growing worthlessness of the currency and increase of emissions regulations are the main things driving everything. Personally I long for the days of 1100, 1200, 1300cc big torquey four-bangers in affordable naked street bikes, that don't need 1 million RPM to move.

As far as the CBR 600RR there is no excuse why we aren’t getting it because if it passes euro specs it will pass here. Speaking of euro specs that has been killing sport bikes for awhile now. If you want a Japanese sport bike get them now because they are going away. While the market is okay with the “replacements” if you want a true sport bike they are not a replacement. European manufacturers aren’t abandoning sport bikes anytime soon so at least we’ll still have those to choose from. For whatever reason the European manufacturers don’t have the same problem as the Japanese manufacturers do.

And less and less people buy them in the USA so who cares. I think it's just the presence of them and the knowledge that they exist that people are more interested in, than actual ownership. Look around the used market and look at the mileage on the odometers. People don't keep them or ride them very much. Same with 600 supersports.

They are reducing their investment in HOMOLOGATION bikes. Both companies still make 1L superbikes. Oh, and when everyone thought Suzuki was dying off before the 8S/8R/V-Strom bike came out? Suzuki had a very profitable year selling Marine products and vehicles (just not in the USA market). What Japanese companies do outside the USA is more indicative of how the brands are doing corporately than anything else. Look at the bigger picture. Also with less millions tossed into MotoGP and other classes of racing, there is more money for development of motorcycles that will get a younger class back into riding for the long run. There are strategies that corporations make which have 20 year investments, not 2 or 3 years. Look at the bigger picture.

Nooooo! Hi guys! You two know me well enough to know that expensive sport bikes and euro emissions is not just the problem in sales. This area of market and lack of sales is also due to a lack of skill! Yes, even the 600’s. Sport bike enjoyment is best experienced on the track these days! How much fun can a R1 have on the street anymore. That’s why I teach.

u seem to miss the point. They are taking the r1 off market because no one buys one. Emissions has very little to do with it. Ofcourse it can easily be made euro 5 compliant by just changing a few things in exhaust, valve timing etc. Honda just released a new fire blade, which is obviously an inline 4 cylinder too. The market has moved to adventure bikes and no new beginner are looking to track drive 200hp monsters. The economy is obviously a mess too and I can understand that struggling companies has to sell that which is in demand, not bikes which only caters to proffesional racers or people who has more balls than brains. I wonder how many Tenere Yamaha has sold in comparison Yamaha r1.

The answer is...........buy a second hand bike. As if anyone here can get close to getting the most out of say, a 2008 R1 or the like. The amount of gadgets and 100 settings on new bikes is catering to people who don't know how to ride without music playing or navigation or any sense of being one with your machine. People see trees and can't see the forest.

Mehhhhh, agree and disagree. I’m 39 and have been on two wheels since I was 7yo. I grew up racing motocross and had only ever ridden sport bikes that had no ABS or TC until my current bike, 2023 CB1000R Black Edition. I loved the days of insane 500cc 2 strokes, but when you’re talking 200+hp on a stock factory bike, no TC/ABS is a death sentence for 90% of the people that would buy them. I love the ability to switch it into track mode or turn TC all the way off for pushing hard, but it’s nice to have the nannies there when not going hard in the paint - unexpected coolant leaks from cars, gravel, etc

MT line is selling like hotcakes. T7 is a big seller. In a time of shrinking new rider markets, Yamaha did something goofy and wild like a Niken 3-wheeler. Yamaha also develops engine technologies for many automotive segments. Yamaha also makes robotics. Yamaha also is a giant musical and electronic instrument maker. CBR1000RR was trailing eveyrthing until the unaffordable RR-R came out. CBR600RR is still about the least powerful of all the supersports. Honda naked bike class has nothing nearly as interesting as Yamaha, Kawasaki, KTM, Ducati, Triumph, or MV. Honda quit making cool stuff like V4's, Vtwins, V5 back in the late 2000's.
