Julian from Yamaha comes in to show Lee the amazing new THR amps from Yamaha.
The Yamaha THR5A is all about Acoustic Tone, its about getting the studio acoustic sound whereever you are. With a choice of microphone emulations you can get a variety of different flavours to your playing and with the option of dialling in reverb, chorus, compression and others you get a much broader sonic plane than just playing your guitar.
THR5A is optimized for use with electric-acoustic and Silent Guitars. Utilising advanced modeling technologies developed by Yamaha, THR5A offers simulations of classic tube condenser and dynamic mics combined with studio-grade effects to create recording-studio tone direct from your guitar and wherever you are.

Yesterday I played for a small group (about 40 people) in a café setting and used nothing but the THR5A running on batteries. Sounded great and I didn't even have to max out on the volume setting.

Sounds nice! So do you think it would do the job outdoor-busking classical style/ singer-songwriter for a small circle of ~ 10 meters?

Thanks for the concise overview. As a professional guitarist with decades of experience giving live, un-amplified concerts in recital halls but no experience with amplifiers, I appreciated the talking. I could understand the context of how this amplifier produced the different sounds. From this viewer’s perspective, I appreciated your connecting information about the product with the sounds, as opposed to someone noodling about and twirling knobs. And although this wouldn’t be useful for me in my live performances, it is definitely something I’m going to purchase for use at home.

I got myself a Yamaha AG Stomp a while back, which is pretty much the same thing effects wise in that it also has the mic simulations and that's just superb !! One of the best pedals I ever bought. I'd have no quarms about buying this amp.

Just a viewer perspective, the first thing everyone wants to hear is the amp, not five and a half minutes of talking before we get any music. Start with a quick demo, then go into the details and different setting examples.

Wow, this has been out there for nearly 9 years now. Still for sale, obviously popular. Is it safe to assume due to mics it doesn't have a stereo out? If they updated the electronics in an AG Stomp. provided all the same controls and attached to a little AMP cabinet I would be all in! Or just give us an updated AG Stomp.

Not sure if the amp is meant to do this, but my particular THR5A, when on the EG CLN setting, can actually get a decent amount of warm crunch if I crank the master to 11 and leave the volume knob somewhere around 10 o clock. It sounds great when playing lead, but anything on the low E string sounds like a fuzz pedal.

Hi, thanks for the review. Can I connect the output of ZOOM AC3 to acoustic guitar input like Yamaha THR5A or Marshall AS50D or orange crush Acoustic 30? The reason for this is I like the Shimmer effect (Pad) and would like to use it for professional performances with acoustic guitar amp.... Will this ruin my Zoom AC3 or acoustic guitar amp? In other words, will such acoustic guitar amplifiers support line level input from Zoom AC3 (Left/mono OUT)

the purpose of an amp is to increase the volume, So if you made only one amp why not make it the 10 watt model seeing as they already make it in the range for electric, It has batteries for outside where you will need more volume. Also when you play the acoustic You will hear both the amp and guitar together, so why not let us here what it sounds like in the room
@AttitudeCastle

My THR sounds better, but my Fishman puts out the sound volume. Horses for courses.

I mixed a mic and guitar through a Zoom R8, just the preamps, and fed them both separately back into the THRA (mic in aux guitar into guitar channel). Worked well. I guess you could mix them first and just feed one stereo back into either channel.

I agree with Oliver Branch's comment, accepting it at face value as sounding like it would work. But mostly, I would not bother. It is not that kind of amp. Yes it makes your guitar louder, but not really loud. It is not about that. This amp adds reverb and effects to your guitar, but is not really the way to go for purely getting louder. It makes you sound better, but not all that much louder. This amp makes you sound better to you, and those in your living room. If you want to sound louder, get a Fishman Loudbox. They don't lie; they are loud.

I bought one of these yesterday. Anything over halfway volume when strumming and it sounded awful. I took it back to the shop and they plugged me into another TRH5A and it was a bit better but not great. I ended up with a Laney LA20C instead. Funnily the strumming from 18.05 on this video sounds rubbish also. Its limitations are very light strumming or fingerpicking, for these its great. The all singing all dancing amp it aint!

@tommadden6523
@tommadden6523 5 жыл бұрын
Elder Lemon, could it be that your guitar was too hot for the amp? Were you getting a rock and roll crunchy distorted sound? If so, this is because the incoming signal from the guitar is too hot (too loud) for for the amp. If your guitar preamp has a volume knob, turning the volume down at the guitar usually solves the problem. Sorry it did not work out for you. It works for me, on a number of guitars, and only those with a battery in the guitar put out the kind of volume that distorts the amp - in which case turning the guitar volume knob down solves the problem. Moot point by now I suppose. :)

An acoustic practice amp, am I missing something you don't need an acoustic practice amp because an acoustic guitar already makes enough noise bye itself. Seems like Yamaha are creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.

Exactly! I don't get it, why don't they make it big enough to actually use for a small gig etc, why make a tiny amp for an acoustic? Weird!! If absolutely love it if it was powerful enough to use when in paying in a gig situation

TheEvilscotsman123 This thing is good for recording and a cool way to color and customize the sound before plugging into a mixing board. The huge 100 watt amp days are over because they're simply not needed with modern sound systems.
