higher Octane FUEL DOES NOT add mileage. If your car/bike needs it to stop detonation, run it, if not run the 87. Ethanol gas will not go as far as Ethanol does not have as many btus ( but it does give extra Octane compared to regular gas ) so it takes more of it to produce the same power as pure gas. ( thus lower MPG )

Thanks for explaining. I did some more research and even after running the premium octane, there wasn't a significant change. Especially not enough to justify paying so much more per gallon. I have another video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9-BqdB6m8epp4E.html where I recently explained that even the ethanol free didn't really make much difference. Granted, motorcycles are only working on a few gallons of gas at a time. So if it's only a few mpg difference, the total miles traveled on 4 gallons won't make much of a noticeable difference.

@@tubabilly I get around 2-3 mpg lower on 10% ethanol vs real gas but the cost difference doesn't justify buying the real stuff. Same is true for car and motorcycle. You can't leave the ethanol gas in the tank as long as it goes bad much quicker, and it absorbs water and breaks away from the gas and sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the pickup tube is. It also causes carb jet problems if sitting for a month or 2. I don't drive much and found turning the car left and right quickly several times to mix the gas up, gives me about 2-3 mpg higher than just not doing that. ( 5 or 6 mpg lower if I don't mix it up vs 2-3 lower if I mix it ) The cars runs way better at startup if I do that as soon as I drive vs not doing it at all. I use about 10 gallons of gas every 3 months or so, if you use it much faster then it likely doesn't matter. Using a tank every week or 2 would not be affected like it sitting for months between fill ups. My car gets 30-35 mpg on the highway and normally 30 around town. I get 25-27 actual when it takes me 3 months to empty the tank, I got 22-23 back when I wasn't sloshing the gas around at the start of every drive. Engine makers could make the compression higher for more power ( say 12:1 ) and we could run 85% ethanol ( 100+ octane ) and it would cut fuel use and still give higher HP cars, but I can't get 85%E here in South Carolina anywhere around me. Some people claim the additives in the higher grade fuel are better for the engine but I have seen nothing that supports that. Maybe was true in the 80's right after leaded gas was stopped but nothing suggests it true after the 90's.

Gas mileage is important when you don't have a gas gauge. My V star 650 gets 50 mpg. at 60. So I hit the reserve switch at 180-185 consistently. Nice to know you can go 200 m. Most of my friends only go 100 or so with all kinds of bigger motors.

just recently came across your channel...i also have a vstar 1100 classic...i get about 115 miles before i have to go to reserve....i have a question maybe you can answer...have you done any carburetor work to your bike?

Thanks for the comment! Since this video I've moved to central GA where roads are curvy and there's less chance to go 75mph for a long time. I go easy on the throttle and I get around 140 miles till I switch to reserve. I haven't had any carb work done except to have it tuned up once a couple years ago. I ride every day so gas doesn't have time to go bad or to gum up the carb too bad.

I must be doing something right with mine then. I get around 220 miles per tank in my 1100 classic at 70mph

@@KAWABAGGER06 how much fuel does yours usually take at around 220 mile? Are you into reserve at all? I fill up by about 135 mile (220km), ive never had to go to reserve tho just that where I live/have travelled so far if I dont fill up then I have a min 50 mile to the next place for fuel. Only had the bike 7 months

Vstar frame label shows octane 91 or higher
@UFO-047 Жыл бұрын
Thats 91 RON which is used in Australia, Asia and Europe. Minimum octane for US is 86. From workshop manual. Only low compression engines
