A partial repair of the 1994 YAMAHA W7 synthesizer.
I only managed to repair the buttons. as for the disk drive or backlight I failed. : Backlight can be bought in strips and cut to size : there is a floppy drive cable convertor available for these so you can use the USB to floppy emulators now.

Hi Markus!...sorry just looked up your site again as I had issues with my disk drive on w7 again. Saw you had replied to my comment. Hope I'm not too late.. lol. Found the belt drive for the W7 at Syntaur Parts in US about $16 US. but beware ….there are 2 different types of A drives used for W7's so need to watch out for that. these guys are great to deal with and are really passionate about their stuff. Found that the belts had perished again so will have to get some new ones. Once again your info was invaluable. Thanks heaps for the time taken! Pete

Great1 I have the W5 and there are issues. One main is the buttons you just replaced. Another is the display that has to be called blank, so dim. The jog wheel is kaputt with a loose cord I guess and the increase button not work -only the decrease button. It's a cool machine. The age is unbelievable 26 years and a pretty woman still. Thanks Mark. Goaan replace the battery at least.

Excellent video, as always. I owned 3 of these over the years, and on 2 of them i replaced every single tact switch. Big-ish job, but worth the effort. The switch & disk drive problems were a common issue with the W series, i seem to recall. :)

I'd call this a win, definitely; the problems that weren't solved in the video have solutions that you know about, so you can deal with them as you wish. Your method of finding/sorting out the key volume problem is a testament to why a person, after testing a newly-ordered TR-505 with a few 'dead pads' should probably check the volume levels of every sound, before opening the unit, and lightly abrading the carbon contacts. Not that I ever did that. I love this channel.

Awesome video... I have the Yamaha QS-300 and by the way they look very similar... but about 10 years ago I had the same problem with the display and I replaced the whole module with a L.E.D backlit display, it wasn't easy as I had to follow the connections of both data sheets to match the pins, but it's been working ever since. And it's a lot more pretty to look at with the white font and blue backlit..

Hi Marcus. You're videos are inspirational. I succesfully changed my sy85 floppy drive a few years ago. The guys at Yamahaforums have quite a bit of help, though ive got an audio interference problem on the sy85 I cannot fathom. I wondered if you had any advice? There's a very high pitched whine on audio out and on headphones. It glitches, sort of like a dial up modem sound when bank change button is pressed e.g. song to performance to voice. Last time I opened it up I had no idea what I was doing. Feeling braver and inspired now, but would welcome any pointers as to what possible fault I'm looking for. Thanks in anticipation.

Rather like the belts, replacement electroluminescent backlights seem to be seriously overpriced. Instead, you can buy sheets of EL foil for a much more reasonable price and cut them to size. I did this with my Emulator II and have been meaning to do the same with my Yamaha QX1.

Under the heading "nothing to lose" if the belt on the floppy is in fact slipping. An old trick for belt driven tape players was to wipe the belt with brake fluid. Then wipe it clean with alcohol. The brake fluid would cause the natural rubber in the belt to swell. This is quick fix that would get you going temporary. After a few months the belt will shrink back up again.

+Mick7sp Thanks I may just have to open this keyboard up again.
@mick7sp
@mick7sp 8 жыл бұрын
markusfuller Welcome. Let the brake fluid set a few minutes before wiping it off. Should work as long as the belt it rubber based. For anyone that wonders why it works. It's becasue the cords in the belt keep it from expanding in length but allow it to grow in thickness. :)

Come on, Matsushita Electric was foremost about quality and reliability, as opposed to Sony being about maximum profits. Sony consumer products tended to die sooner than anything branded Technics, National, or Panasonic. In broadcast market though, both Sony and Panasonic are very respected, as well as JVC. Anyway, I had replaced the belt drive in my SY99 and the backlight display in the SY77. It took me five times to nearly completely disassemble and reassemble the SY77 to make the LCD backlight work properly. I broke the display in the process. I got the new LCD assembly, and it finally worked. I find it very difficult to properly settle the LCD backlight strip. And by the way, I would never install the "cool blue" LCD atrocity. It brings the look and feel of the Yamaha otherwise flagship synth to the level of MX-series.

Hi those 2 things were probes that have tiny grippers on the ends and they were attached to a multimeter which was set to make a sound when the button is pressed. on most multimeters you can go to Ohms setting and they will buzz when it makes a good connection across the pins of the button. if the button does not work correctly it will not make the sound.

Hello Markus Maybe you could solve your problem of rubber belt by cutting it diagonally for shortening a little bit and use a special instant glue used to glue O rings. I found O ring of all diameters sold by meter and this special glue in a workshop who sales pieces and accessories for jacks, it's very cheap ! rubber for O ring is very resistant and could easily replace a belt...

There are many different type and sadly some of them are wired differently inside the switch but you can always take one off and work out the inner wiring then measure it up to find a replacement. maybe on RS electronics or Mouser or some company similar.

Hi Markus, I had the same problem in my Korg X3R, same brand of floppy I believe. I tried the elastic band trick and got the same problem you encountered. I found a bespoke replacement belt online and it worked fine. I think these drives are sensitive and maybe a rubber band just has too much friction or something ... But you're right these belts are expensive. As far as the backlight, I was excited when you talked about replacing the CCL with an LED array: even though it didn't work out in this case, I would love to see how it could be done in general, cos I don't have the faintest idea where to start with a project like that ... Any ideas?
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 8 жыл бұрын
+Jandro Kirkish Hi Jandro. It could be done with LEDS but you would need something to help reflect the light up through the display and make it look quite even. I have opened up a TV set with a strip of LEDS on the bottom and theres all sorts of technical pieces of plastic film with tiny white dots on them to make the light look even.

@markusfuller
@markusfuller 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Brochman Hi Mark. you can buy a floppydisc drive with usb port on it for about £20 and save all your data to a folder on your pc. then if can buy a floppy replacement module that has a usb on the front and put that into your w5 (you have to get the right sort / theres scsi and ide versions) but then you can use a usb key on your w5 to load data. the floppy emulator has an up/down button and a display 1 to 99 so you load 1 floppy into 1 location 2nd floppy into location 2 etc etc. then choose a number depending on which floppy you would have put into the w5. all together it would cost around £50. im hoping to put one on my QY700 soon just incase my drive fails on that.

Can you dig up a service manual? It should have the floppy drive pinouts, these 24 pin connectors were apparently from the old MSX computer architecture and it is indeed possible to directly wire it to a 34 pin standard IBM floppy connector.

Antonello Petrino Hello Antonello. when I sold the w7 I think there may have been a factory reset disk with it as there were about a dozen disks. I think you can also reset it using a sysex file dump through the midi input but as to where this file can be found I have no clue. maybe you can ask on the yamaha forums as there may be someone who can point you in the right direction. sorry i am not more helpful here but i simply do not have the disk.

I don't know if you put Matsushita as MatsuSHITa on purpose or because you saw it on a forum styled as such. But they did make some very shocking disk drives, both floppy and DVD (common fault for laptop disk drives are because they use matsuSHITa drives), but now i believe they are under the Panasonic name.

+markusfuller It looks like a flat belt so you might be able to get away with a small overlap of the cut ends. Maybe lightly sand the rubber before bonding and take care to avoid making the joint too stiff as that might be like a bump on a smooth road.
