Hold the grey bit on the lapping tool so it oscilates, they work well if you do it the right way

anytime water gets in a motor some damage is done to the rings and cylinder wall and the only way to check is the ring gap and bore gauge to know exactly how much wear.From my experience lapping valves just leads to quick wear and more valve adjustments.we use new valves on new valve job.no lapping

I would have chose to hand lap the valve in with my palm lapping technique/ back & forth style like trying to start a fire with a wooden dowel. Slow n steady back and forth until you reach a nice shinny even surface. But I guess that drill method is definitely faster. Nice job.

You are supposed to hold the body of the lapping tool stationary lightly, so the cup oscillates with the same motion as a stick and cup does, each time it cycles, the body jumps slightly in one direction to shift to the next position. The way you used it, you might as well have just put a tube over the stem and span it. I'm surprised it didn't mention doing this in the instructions (you did glance through them at least a bit right?) , the gunson one I have has this written on the label on the tool itself.

I have realized that since making the he vid but the cups don’t suction well enough anyway. And it was from Amazon, there were no instructions...lol.

@@AppalachianMountainRiders ok, for info on the original design the instructions are marked "use fine paste only, hold the body lightly, spin at 1000rpm, max 1200rpm, and inspect progress at 2 second intervals" (they work fast). I'm guessing you didn't start with fine paste and this caused the suction cup issue also because the friction with coarse or medium paste is higher. Not a complete substitute for a stick and feeling the progress on a nice job but worth considering you have to do a really bad head and don't have a cutter/have a sacrificial valve to use. Sometimes I use both and switch as it comes towards finished.

You do need to hold the big part to Put a spring behind the valve to push it up then is all the suction cup has to do is spin the valve back and forth

Do they make stainless steel or titanium valves for the wolverine? Are used to do garden tractor poles and we had all billet rods and pistons and stainless or titanium valves they can really take a lot of RPMs and are super strong.

thanks for the vid Jason, as a first time lapper, the top of the valve needs to be 'brake cleaner ' clean before you put the suction cup on it, any lapping compound or funk is unacceptable... then as you use the 'amazon lapping tool' you have to hold the gray body to enable the 'oscillating' feature, it takes a few trys to get the feel of the tool, regarding pressure applied and rpm of drill, but overall it worked well for me.. the part that failed for me was the on the last valve, 16 total, the suction cup started to 'split' at the the factory mold joint so Ill be sending it back but in hind sight, the wooden dowel tool would have been the best solution.. its probably a lil quicker overall..

Love it! I don’t have any of the outside side weather seal on yet so it’s letting quite a bit of air in around it right now...lol. I like it a lot better than the panel door for sure!

Oil your valves so you do not destroy your guides,some are a pain in the hiney to find replacement for like my Chrysler 300.

Was all the crud in the valves from the muddy water getting in, or just build-up from hard use over time? Or a combination of both?
@AppalachianMountainRiders

It was from the muddy, sandy water.

You need to HOLD the lapping tool otherwise it’s just spinning and you’re killing your valve guides (which also need lubricating 🫣)

Carbon on the valves will make the suction poor. Clean the valves first.

Why would the manufacturer of that lapping tool make it so big? The whole thing looks way too awkward. Hand lapping is the only way to fly.
@zapper28

5:15 It's not the best lapping tool, but anyways you better learn how to use it properly at first. You missed everything about it. Next time start with valve cleaning. Here some directions for this tool: Use fine grade grinding paste. Apply lightly for 2 seconds. Drill speed aprox. 1000rpm. Max speed 1250rpm. 🔥HOLD CASE LIGHTLY ALLOWING IT TO ROTATE SLOWLY ! ! !
