Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere - 2008 - Test Ride & Review
The biggest question is: “Do we really need big and expensive motorcycle to travel around the world?” The short answer is “No”, we don’t need it! We need water, we need food, we need shelter and anything else is just luxury extras. After I have tested the most famous brands and models on the market I decided to show you my bike as well. To travel the world you don’t need fast, you need travel bike. Many people will disagree with me and will say that this Tenere is to small and not a proper motorcycle for long trips, but in last five years I have been to more than 50 countries. What that’s mean, it’s not good, of course is good and I having evidence about it.
Right from the shop it’s coming with 21-17 Inch tires, 22 litters petrol tank and possibility to load a lot of luggage, stock side cases and top box as well. It has nice light and good enough wind screen. The engine is not that impressive, 660cc, single cylinder and delivers only 48 H.P, but if you ask me, more than enough. Yes, you can feel it powerless on the highways, but is that what you are looking for?

The gear indicator is there for a reason. It is easier to lose track of the exact positioning of the gearbox if you have to rely on muscle memory alone. You just should be able to tell a high gear from a low gear, that's it.

I really love the attitude of yours towards riding and adventure. Seriously some of the best thoughts on this topic on the internet. I’ve been test riding the big heavy adventure bikes such as GS1200, Africa twin but I keep longing for my 1979 Honda XL 250. I think I need to go back to basics. Thanks man!

I also have xt660z, and regularly put 25ltr into the stock tank. The reserve light comes on and lasts a very long time. Great bike!

Hi, I came here from your vid on how to extend the engine live. I found out a lot of your advice matches my riding and maintenance habits. Changing oil as long as it is still not gone bad and keeping the revs reasonably low, except for overtaking. So I decided to watch another vid of yours an subscribed cause I like your channel. My bike is a 1996 Honda NX650 which I bought 3 years ago with 15000km on it. Now it has 40000. I'm impressed by the many kilometers you made travelling by bike and yes I like the sound of a single cylinder too. Cheers, Simon.

I would agree with a lot of what you have to say, good advice and perspective. The torque on thumpers is good, on the Tenere, the KLR650, they're great, however, other than the Transalp which is a bit of a softie (or looks like so, yet, might not be so soft after all), the midsize ADV bikes tend to be thumpers, so, vibrations and generally agricultural. If we can get a pint sized version of the Africa Twin at 6-700CC displacement, 60ish horses, I would be as happy as you are with your Tenere. Keep feeding us your wisdom, its great! Cheers..

Five years later, many moto's later, I have just this week bought my second XT660Z a 2009 model with less than 6K miles. This is still THE true adventure bike for me. I hope you are still enjoying your riding.

Don't know why the 660Z wasn't sold in USA market (as far as I know), as I agree with your observation of it being a very capable ADV rig. Yamaha reliability is tough to beat. Go light, go far. Appreciate your common sense and real-world perspective.

Did a Google search and didn't find anything to confirm that. Available outside USA but not imported here, for some reason. I suspect the new T7 will be here in 2018, though. I have a 2003 KTM 640 ADV that does what I need it to, so far. Yes, it's buzzy on-road but weighs 350 pounds dry, carries 7.5 gallons of fuel and is very capable off-road (at least on the tracks my nascent skills will tackle) with excellent suspension and brakes. The perfect ADV rig is a unicorn, from what I've learned, so it becomes a balance and compromise. I'm inclined to ride BDR - type tracks when time allows and the KTM appears well-suited for that. Happy trails to you in 2018!

Hello! This is my first comment ever on KZfaq after lurking for years. I want to start off by thanking you and saying how much I appreciate your fantastic, no-nonsense advice all around. As someone looking to get into their first adventure bike and all of your video's emphasis on light bikes (but your prior comments on problematic oil changes for Husqvarna), the new 2017/2018 Husqvarna 701 Enduro is at 145 kg and newly stated 6000 mile service intervals, great durable synthetic chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame, low buzziness on highways, and raving reviews for the bike on road and off-road. Someone recently took it from California to Argentina as well! Since I respect your perspective and experience so much, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this bike! Thank you!

I use to have Husqvarna. Not 710, I had 510 E. It was only 120 kg off road orientated. About the new 710, yes, it is 145kg, but dry weight. When you fill the tank 14 l + 3 l oil and 1 l antifreeze = 160kg. When you add a bigger tank, you will need it on the trips. Better fairing, engine guard, stronger subframe for luggage it will become almost the same kg as my Tenere. The engine is provided by KTM 690, which is great and powerful, but not really reliable.

I agree with you about speed. If you want to go fast, get a sport bike. I have a 2019 Kawasaki Versys 650, I don't do any off-road as you do, so there wasnt a need for me to obtain the Yamaha, as you have, although it is a great bike. For my road trips and commutes, I'm pleased with what I have, and it serves my purpose without breaking the bank. Good video, sir.

Greadings from Honduras, this is in Central America, I'm re-starting rinding motorcycle I learn when i was 15 years old on a 125 two strokes yamaha cross motorcycle, now I am 47 and to re start I'm riding a 200 cc gensis gxt (chinisee ) ... so as you say low budget to go back to the basics. I like your yamaha 660 when i get ready i think that could be an option to grow. Ride safe abd enjoy.

In the US, we have the WR250R, WR250x SM, the XT200, Super Tenere and the Tenere 700. You can day trip on WR450F and WR250F in some states, but the top of the list. We have a big gap between 250cc and 700cc. The Tenere 700 is 450lbs and the 250r is approx less than 300 lbs. The 250r is great off-road, but riding to Alaska (one of my goals) might be a stretch from Colorado.

Totally agree with you. It is really crazy that everyone supports this new trend of very expensive and big cc bikes...THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED AT ALL to spend so much money for a bike and if you ask me this is just "show off" and no necessity at all. Keep up your nice job on these videos!!

I had a 660Z , rode it over all terrain, loved the fuel range, totally reliable machine. 6th gear would have been great for those long motorway sections. I do more off-road these days so I'm riding a XT225 Serow . Now there's a true go anywhere machine!

Saw a couple of guys at the post office who appeared to be together in some context, none of my business... I saw them out side by a couple of high end mountain bikes caked in mud, but it had not rained in Az. In five months. “Where’d you guys find mud?” I asked. “Wyoming, Montana ..” They were Aussies on a walkabout, no back packs, just mountain bikes. I asked where they were going, they said they don’t know, so I directed them to the Grand Canyon.

Adventure bikes are a compromise of less power and weight over more power and weight, bigger equals more comfort to some degree but smaller is more balanced. DR 650 is my weapon of choice, not much power but enough, not overly heavy and simple to work on, 20 minutes to adjust the valves, simple carburettor, no electronic aids, bullet proof engine and easy to rebuild when needed. My 2005 has 485,000 Klms, been rebuilt a couple of times and my 2014 has 140,000 Klms and never touched the engine so far. The great thing with the DR is they are cheap to buy and you modify it how you like, parts are cheapish and Procycle in the states have a huge catalogue of parts to make the bike what you want. Good logical thinking video sir, after all most countries have low speed limits and radar guns are so popular with the police so no real need for 160 HP.

My riding friend has DR 650 and I am very familiar with it. We have done some fast fix on the fly. It is great machine and perfect choice for round the world bike. The problem is that at the moment, new you can buy only in the states, not in Europe.

Love your videos mate, I have a 2008 XT660R , it's simple, reliable, inexpensive and I've taken it into some rediculously rough places guys with fancy expensive bikes wouldn't dream of. Keep up the good work, your videos are honest, no nonsense, practical and funny :)

Spot on. Exactly why I like mine so much. Having watched your videos and seen the bike exceed 100000km I think mine is still a baby with 22000km, all in the last two years. 'it just does it ' is a perfect description. Another one might be 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. As much as I like the new stuff and am always interested, every time I ride my thumper again I know why I bought it. Great review Happy travels.

That is a great bike ! Unavailable here in the U.S. I have never been riding in the woods, over rough terrain or out on gravel & wished for a bigger heavier more expensive bike. NEVER, NOT ONCE. 650 is my limit. The bike you really love, is the best bike for you ! Truly being happy & comfortable on the bike you personally feel is best, will inspire the most positive energy, making you confident, enduring & capable. You will do things & go places with a bike you love, that other people will tell you can’t be done. I ride a Versys 650 set up for off road & am very happy. The bike is far more capable than anyone gives it credit for. Or maybe it isn’t, & I just like it !

I do agree with you... The 1st and only thing which really matters is the weight ! That's why I wouldn't choose the 660 Tenere. Sorry, it's almost 190 kg. Best choice is a KTM 690 enduro 140kg or a DRZ 400 suzuki 140kg as well. Think about it...

I already thought about it. KTM 690 is 150kg wet - When you add a bigger tank, wind screen, stronger subframe and better seat it will come very close to the weight of the Tenere. I will not even talk about the real ability of the engines. The DRZ is better choice, but again don't forget that to transfer it to an optimal adventure machine you have to make a lot of changes. Also I am 185, 105kg, do you think that this DRZ is for me? To finish the post I will add that this was my choice and I never said that this is the only choice. It was perfect for me and I never regret.

Been watching many of your videos, what you says make sense. I hv a big adv bike and yes I don’t need it. Adventure rides what we need is a reliable bike, recently 12th Sept 2019 I did a solo round trip to Thailand on a Vespa, for once I had to ride slow and being alone did not need to keep to anyone schedule. It is very enjoyable trip, I think I see more on this single trip compare to all others. Now I am planning a 5000km solo round trip to thousand corners Thailand on my Vespa. Thinking of getting a smaller bile like the CB500X 2019 which I feel perfect for my style of riding. Thank you what you says make sense chiao 😆

Hi, You are completely right. I have a BMW F650 Funduro 1998. cheap and simple . I did all the service myself (like new) . For what you tell about your bike this is very similar but a bit older . The rest as you say is Luxury. thanks for your videos

Hi , I totally agree with your view of what bike to use for touring. If you are all about luxury buy a plane ticket and fly. I once watched a documentary of a couple of guys touring through Africa with 4x4's and they met a husband and wife in Egypt that had driven all the way from Cape town on two Chinese 200cc motorcycles. Like you also said, learn to enjoy what you have and any journey will be fun. Keep up the nice work. Really looking forward to your next video.

haha!i thought i listen to myself! yes,the simplest the better with no fancy things to show off is what we really want to enjoy our rides. agree with you except for the single cylinder (i'm in love with v-twins) i have an old transalp 650 (similar power and weight) with the same front suspension mod with you and i'm never going to sell it.it's more than enough for any adventure trip. keep up the good work and keep riding your bike!you've done an excellent mod.like it!

I don't understand why people say these smaller capacity bikes aren't good for long trips. The Yamaha 660 motor is really reliable so capable of munching miles. Easily capable of riding/cruising at the speed limit. Maybe this myth that these smaller bikes aren't good for long rides is why we can't get the manufacturers to build a decent mid-weight ADV. It is super frustrating. Incidentally not bagging this dudes XT660Z, but both the XT660R and XT660X make the same power, are lighter, and are wayyyy cheaper (especially now they are second hand). I rode the Himilayan the other day and it was awesome.

I owned a Yamaha R150 - it was awesome and would have done long trips easy. I was thinking a stripped down one with maybe YZ125/250 forks and wheels could be a fantastic small capacity ADV. OR maybe even the KTM 200 Duke. :)

125 Kymco K-Pipe here, you decadent capitalist 250cc rider! LOL! Though I admit to wanting a Kawasaki Versys X-300, I'll make due with the 125 a bit longer as it has almost 4k miles on the odometer. I've never understood why people buy a bike and then trade it in within a year.

I ride a Yamaha XTZ 1200 Tenere. If this bike were available in USA I would trade for it in a minute....less weight, better off road performance, and while my Tenere gets around 50 mpg, I suspect this bike would get even better milage per gallon. These are great bikes.

You are absolutly right. I am riding last years Honda CB 650, CB 400N, CB 900F2, Yamaha SR 500, Yamaha FJ1200, Yamaha FJ 1200 Comete Sidebike, Moto Guzzi Le Mans 1100, BMW GS 1200 and aktuell Yamaha XJR 1300. The GS was good, but looks baaad, and for a journey too heavy. Now I‘m looking for a smaller Bike for longer Trips. And the XJR for the weekend (I love that Big Block 4Zylinder Engine) 😊

i have a yamaha sz 16 bike, it's not as fast as yours, but i have already seen so many beautiful things in different places because of it. anyway, i wish i had that xt 660 too.. yamaha revs your heart!!!

You're the man bud,total honesty,down to earth,real world honesty,im on my 2nd 650 versys,but finding thats a little big n heavy ( im only 5 foot 5 inches ) when i swop i will be considering a little x300 kawasaki,itll do 80/90 mph,with off road capabilities, and soo light

I think 500cc any style of bike is prefect, maybe 650, cheap on everything, insurance, parts. Still enough power get you climb up the hill. The yamaha 660 is prefect.

500cc motorcycle is a MASSIVELY HUGE in many areas of the world ...ILLEGAL even! UNTHINKABLY impractical only for rich nuts in the west. And I GET IT! I really do get that 125cc motor will take you anywhere ....BUT raw TORQUE is like a DRUG! It is like SEX! It is the difference between looking at a faded torn photo of a beautiful woman and and actually bedding her! Just simply getting from location to location is one thing .....WHEELYING anytime along the way with a simple twist of the wrist? Ahh THAT is something else ENTIRELY ....and no it is NOT practical...NOT necessary....not safe, not smart....it's as over the top ridiculous as daring to have an affair with everything to lose ...just DUMB ....but damn! ya know?

Excellent video. There is no perfect bike and any bike you choose will lack things others have and you would want. Making a bike your own is the way to go, pick a good base model and start from there. And no fancy technology will make you a better rider, distance traveled and challenges on the go will do.

Your right about having to have a lot of horse power, back in the day we did a lot of adventure riding with just one horse! Nice bike, I haven't seen any here in US.

A perfect bike I always wanted to own. But I am a little too short with my 177cm for the tall seat height unfortunately. I will happily settle for my Honda VFR 750 for now like I did the last 8 years. Great video; keep going.

I have a R1100GS as well as a XT660 Tenere, the Tenere is a great bike, but the BMW is easier to pick up off the ground as the BMW tends not to fall over flat as it rests on the cylinder heads, when loaded with Adventure gear, the Tenere is more difficult to pick up. But the Tenere is more comfortable, better wind protection, and more stable in the dirt because of the 21 inch front wheel.

My XT 660 is the "R" model. It has a 15L tank and much less gadgets than yours. Not even a rev-counter or fuel gauge. But I don't need it. Only problem is like I said elsewhere, my wife like to ride everywhere with me and if we go on longer weekends trips it is limiting us as it is both our weight plus the weight and space of luggage for two and we pack the minimum. And her comfort on the back is not good for anything more than a few kilometer. Otherwise I absolutely love this bike.

I agree completely. I currently drive KTMs and I trust them enough to drive around Europe and closer part of Asia but when I'm thinking about RTW trip I will go with XT660.

The sound is inconsistent and pretty bad, but the video is really good! I've always had a passion for the Ténéré, back when I was a kid. And when Yamaha re-introduced it in 2008 I was excited ... but never was able to afford one. Prices for used bikes are still insanely high, which must speak for their quality. I wonder what will happen in the future, if they will bring a T7 to market. I now ride a 1992 XTZ750 - love the twin headlights and the Dakar look. The weight ... not so much :) Keep up your great vids ... your tricks, tips and reviews are fun to watch. Maybe you could give some offroad riding tutorials?

Hi Daniel, sorry about the audio, I am working on it, but it's not that easy to make something from nothing, if you understand what I mean. Also is difficult to ride, shoot video and audio at the same time. To have a perfect match you need a team. Off road tutorials, hmmm, I will think about it. By the way XTZ 750 is great machine, except the weight, as you said.Thanks for watching!

No matching audio is not a big deal - helmet-cam-voice is different from in-front-of-cam voice and pretty impossible to match. But the gain is a little too high, the audio is in the upper end of the spectrum. I don't know what you're shooting with but maybe there is a way to turn the audio down a bit to prevent peaking. But that's just a minor detail that does not make the episode any less informative or entertaining.

Great video and absolutely right. Exactly what I say too when I'm out riding. Stick to the basics and what you really need. You can do most rides and only kind of bike. Crikey people ride around the world on mopeds so there really isn't a 'need' for big adventure bikes...but they do have some benefits too it is true.

I am a Zambian new rider, about a year old on the bike and have been using a GY140 chines off-road bike. Knowing my area of operation, I am considering getting a slightly better bike one to move me 1000km both road and off-road. Kindly advise on the affordable and reliable bike to suit my needs. Well...this is the answer that you have to find by yourself, it is part of the adventure... I cannot tell you what is affordable for you. Do not forget that the bike is just a tool, the travel is what really matters!

There is the Honda crf250 rally. I looked up the price and i have to say that this bike is really good over all. Spare parts are accessible all around the world and it's lightweight.

I agree about gear counters! you should know which gear you're in, anyone can make a mistake occasionally and not realise they're in 5th instead of 6th or so on, especially if they are newbees or being harassed by impatient busy traffic! but generally should know which gear they are in! I also agree that your Tenere 660 is powerful enough, 48bhp, or as you said with the power commander perhaps 52bhp or something like that is plenty! very rugged tough bike! all you need for anywhere! plus I'd rather pick that up after a fall if on my own in the middle of who knows where than a GS!
