This scene is quite funny and amusing because it’s Joey wheeler who asked about this underdog card Yugi had then the pharaoh yami Yugi. Says in fake confused puzzlements. Then he turns to yugi to remind him and that’s when Yugi gets angry and embarrassed then he quickly makes up some story to cover up his real feeling for a certain someone he likes very much.

In the Manga the change is basically instantaneous and unnoticeable. The first time anyone notices the switch is because Yugi had just told them about his 'other self' and they were primed for it.

Kinda wish they did this more often in the show. Yami and Yugi occasionally forcing one another to deal with something they simply refuse to would've made for a great running gag.

One of my early works leaned into this idea. Yami was helping Yugi with his trig homework and Yugi asked how he knew so much more than him. Yami goes on a bit of a speal about how trig was used in ancient architecture before admitting that he took over whenever Yugi dozed off in class to keep up appearances and learned it there.

Dan Green is just adorable. He’s still my favorite voice actor after all this time and I’m happy he’s in a place to be more active again. He has amazing range and just… is a great actor overall and not just a gimmicky voice.

the visual change is only so viewers can understand who is "in charge" of the body right now & to underline their differences :) in Japanese, both also have the same voice actor who just deepens his voice a bit as opposed to overseas dubs making the difference more clear with different VAs (maybe to make it easier for children to differentiate the two?)

@@hoseokismyhope3351 Actually, the US dub only has one VA as well. It's easier to tell in earlier episodes, but they're still VERY distinct. Dan Green has a pretty solid vocal range.

@@RavenWoodsDE the Manga had literally no outward change apart from Yami sounding more confident. There was a reason nobody noticed in the early chapters until Yugi outright TOLD them about Yami during the climax of Death-T. I always assumed the height change and transformation montage was for the audience's sake.

@@Dexuz I've always wondered why they didn't mention how Yugi suddenly grew and his voice got deeper 😅 I haven't watched that much Yu-Gi-Oh, but the parts that I have seen have confused me since day one 😅😅 Do they know when Atem is in control or do they just guess and roll with it? Or do they even know he exists at all? Again, confused beginner Yu-Gi-Oh fan here 😅

And it shouldn't take much to find out why, @@0deadx21. Joey is a powerful Duelist, but nobody ever bothers to take him seriously, especially when Joey is compared to Atem and Kaiba, Joey always ends up being the runt of the litter, even Atem's enemies never think Joey ever amounts to anything.

It's because Joey is an "underdog" in the sense that people underestimate him but he's still a great duelist. Pharaoh was too embarassed to clear it up for Joey/express it nicely so he made Yugi tell him lmao

I wouldn't say he was embarrassed to clarify. Yugi started the conversation on the topic so Yami just pulled a swap so yugi didnt hide behind him. It was also a payback moment from season 2 when yugi did the same thing to him and put Yami in control.
