There are a lot more differences to the S and the SM, and also a few that aren't correct. I'm sorry to be that guy, but this video is meant to give advice on the differences. I've had both setups, if you need to swap them, you'll realise what you're in for. The tire size is the width, a percentage of that width as height and rim size. So 120mm, 70% of 120 mm, 17. The front forks are very different and do not have the same compression and rebound rates, especially since the SM forks are adjustable. It is not whether they're USD or conventional, it's what they're designed to do. The other major difference is that the SM fork is shorter, it is not just the wheel as the tire is much taller. It also has a much shorter stroke, so wouldn't do as well off-road. Besides this, there are no gators on the forks, so you get a lot of dirt in the seals, which wear out faster. Rocks can also chip the chrome, cutting the seals and exposing bare metal. The Desert Sled has the same issues. The offset on the triple trees is different as well, where the SM has very little offset (centre of forks are in line with centre of headstock) the S has some more offset to make it more stable on uneven terrain. Low offset gives a much sharper steering feel, which is why racing bikes have the same setup, with a much steeper headstock angle. The SM still has a motocross frame. Axle location makes big difference as well. With the SM it is underneath the fork, so the wheelbase (where the rubber touches the ground) is shorter as well (along with the offset), making it easier to turn. The S has the axle above the bottom on the outside, to both give a longer stroker and adding to the rake and trail, making it more stable. The swingarm is different as well; the kink is further towards the engine, to accommodate the 150 rear, and the chain tensioner is different. The SM uses a block with a bolt and locknut, as well as a hollow rear axle, while the S has two snails with a pin to adjust tension and a solid steel axle with a nut attached. The blocks are more precise and the shaft lower the rotation mass, so it costs less power to rotate, while the snails are fast and easy, with a very strong steel axle. The fixed nut makes maintenance faster as well, which you would do more off on an offroad bike. The SM also has a shorter rear shock to not sit too high in the rear. I parked my SM next to an S and the difference was a few inches at least. This is also a stiffer shock to help with cornering. Sorry for the epistle, but if people come to look for info on the differences on the SM and S, this is pretty much it.

I've ridden super sports for 45 years. I love tearing up corners!!! At 61, I thought I would downgrade from my 1000 to a DRZ-SM. I am having a blast! One word...FUN! I ride backroads in rural TN. They are not sweepers, they are tight...and throw in some gravel and constantly changing road surfaces...and you have a great playground for an SM. I find myself riding more often than in years...just for fun. No destination, just of the joy of it. Oh, and I put on some 70/30 tires and go on trails as well. :-) I would consider getting the 18/21 wheels if I had the chance to do a lot of offroading.

I like how people think a DRZ400sm or any other dual sport bike is a beginners bike. In fact, I think a R1, GSX1000 etc are the real beginners bike as most motorbikes noobs are into those overpowered bikes for show and bragging rights more than actual riding. Anyone with decent amount of time riding bikes would know that an experience rider will pick a dual sport over any useless crotch rocket.

Would it be terrible to combine the best elements of both the SM & S? Buy an S and add the steel brake line or SM brake setup. And a set of SM wheels, then switch them out along with the sprockets & chain.

You forgot to mention that the swing arm is also different on the SM. It is the same as the inverted forks, it came from a RM 250. I have the SM, and a braided front brake line makes a huge difference in the brake feel.

I started riding on a 500 euro Xl600R and a dual sport will give you so much freedom as a beginner. If it falls down no problem usually no damage. And its is fast enough to make me smile after 4 years and owning liters bikes but not so fast you get speeding tickets or death :D. Plus maintenance is so cheaaaap and easy to do on these type of bikes :)

The rear swing arm is different as well. DR swing arm on the S model - RM swing arm on the SM model. The RM swing arm is a bit more adjustable with respect to chain tension and tire alignment.

Had one for trail riding then turned it into a road bike, didn't really like it so now I have a 1990 cbr250rr

Get the SM version and buy a 19” front wheel from Warp 9 for off road riding.

I had a drz 400 sm. Really fun bike! The only thing I didn't like about it was gearbox with just 5 gears.

I can say from experience the worst off road you'd want to put on your DRZ would be an actual dirt/gravel or grated road, and even then you had sharp rocks that are straight tire killers sometimes. the 400 S would be better since the tires are made to be upright 99% of the ride but the main concern would be having your bike slide out from under you just because of the loose ground. still though it's nice to take your bike down a dirt road every so often, rarely have traffic and the only other thing you have to watch out for besides rocks is the occasional cow and/or feral hog.

Tire size is in Millimeters/ percentage ( aspect ratio) - inch diameter of rim. Using these numbers you can calculate overall height. Example 140/50-18 140 mm /25.4 = roughly 5.5 inches wide 5.5 inches * 50% = 2.75 inches 5.5 inches times 2 ( rubber on top and bottom) + rim diameter (18") = 23.5 inch tall tire

Also boys, DRZE has a 39mmFCR carb and the SM has a 36mmCV carb. Ive owned a 2000 drz400e and was so much faster than the DRZ400SM 2021 I owned

Spite, the second number in a tire size is aspect ratio, not length. It's a percentage of the first number, so a 120/70 17 is 120mm wide and 70% of 120mm, or 84mm (ish) tall from bead to contact patch

I really want to love the DRZ 400 SM. I really do. Have tried numerous times, but ultimately I just can't. Not when there's KTM's 690 SMC. Yeah the KTM is almost twice the price, but it has enough things over the Suzuki that I would gladly pay that difference. Shame too as I think the 2019 White/Red/Black 400 SM with those gold wheels looks sexy af.

dual sport is made for twisty and full on dirt roads, it wont slide but your tires lose efficiency in the highways to asphalt carpet roads. Sumo bikes are made for twisty to normal roads that you can swap tires for dirt riding when needed.

Just a note, I've got a monster front brake on my yz 250 and so long as you arent an idiot it's not a problem. It's better if you have the skill.

The DRZ400 is not a bike that's absolutely perfect at one particular thing, but it does everything quite well for what it is. It's kind of a " Jack Of All Trades " kinda bike. Looking to do the suspension on mine, and probably the 470 ( 462 cc ) motor since I'm really only lacking the Web cams ( maybe ) / Stroker crank / 1 piece valve's the springs and seats and obviously the rejetted BSR will have to be swapped out to feed it. As it stands right now, 434 BBK CP 12.5 ratio piston, stage 2 HotCams, TT MCCT, E model single layer base gasket ( makes it 13 : 1 ratio ), the 3x3 and JD jetted BSR with a TwinAir foam filter ( I ride both on and off road and have S and SM wheels ) with an RS3 yoshi, Raptor fuel tap, LED everything and with the tail tidy, Corbin seat, Renthal bars with Zeta drop downs and Zeta XC shields with an R6 tube and a fan mod as for current mods. Did one track day ( was a blast ) and alot of mixed up riding ( on and off road ), it's kinda hard to get tired of it but very easy to find trouble 😆

Bigger gyroscopes have more inherent stability than smaller gyroscopes...this is great off road...slows steering just a bit on road. Braking is far superior than the bigger diam wheels....dependent upon tire..a sportbike tire will suck offroad.

At 5'10" w/o shoes on, I bought the drz400-SM for it's slightly lower seat height over all else. The S was simply too tall for me and I'd say it's not designed for anyone under 6 foot on the street unless you're ok with the potential of accidently dropping it at a stop-light, lol. They make aftermarket SM-size knobbies too! The stock SM tires suck pretty bad in wet grass and soft mud, looses traction and fishtails very easily there but otherwise a blast and I couldnt be more happy with my decision. Yes i'm definately mr. hardhead who is dying to learn how to wheelie too... if I could sleep with it next to me in my bed I would

Man, I put 21",18" KTM knobbies on my DRZ sm and soften the suspension a bit and it's much better than the DRZ E or S in the dirt, which my mates have. Try it. And aren't the shock, swing arm and forks the same as the RMZ 250 just a heavier spring?

the rear swing arms are different ,the motard has the flare angle where the edge of the tire is compared to the duel purpose has the flare in the swing arm further back towards the back axle ,how do i know ,mate couldnt get his motard wheel on after changing swing arm due to damage ,took a while to figure it out that the swing arms are different when we put one on top of the other boo yah there it is , and a return swing arm to shop and and get a motard one bingo wheel and tyre perfect ,great bikes with jets and cut up air box and a exhaust .

120/70 the "70" is a ratio of width to height, not an actual measurement.

90 is NOT the height of the SM front tire...it is 90% of 120.

Have both, my off road is the E, that kicks the ass of the SM and S. Fun fun fun .....

I was gonna flame on the front fork thing but then I remembered that my old drz400sm had it's forks swapped with a motocross bike. At least that's what the guy said. (I have reasons to believe him) Honestly, my old drz sm was just as capable off road as my crf250l. The crf had better traction but the drz's suspension could carry it's momentum better over rough terrain. Edit: of course mud was a major weaknes of the sm but even in most soft terrain it's wide tires let it float on the top while my crf will start digging itself a hole.

Super motos are more a bike you'd slide the rear end out on in racing so they normally have a lot stronger bikes wear as dirt bikes brake more with the rear the front suspension on a super moto is more tuned like a flat tracker the standard is tuned more like a dirt bike /hard enduro bike I put dirt tires on my super moto and I never have a problem with the clearance and it fits me better than with the larger tires and I do a lot of hard enduro also use your rear brake for hills you'll get better hill starts

There's a lot of misinformation in this. To quickly summarise. Forks are longer on the S model and have a bit more travel, they're also not adjustable. Swing arm is shorter on the sm. Those aren't the OEM Brake discs on the sm although they do seem to be the same size as OEM. Gearing is also different on the sm and s

I have been riding a Suzuki burgman 650 for a while and even had a 2006 Honda cbr 600f from 2006-2008 (my ex totaled it), so I was wondering what bike you would suggest for me to get. I am also a big girl so there's that too lol
