Clutch. Blip throttle. Increased rpm’s that come from throttle don’t make you go faster because clutch is pulled. Downshift into the lower gears while the rpm’s are high to match engine speed to transmission speed. Motorcycle doesn’t lunge and is happy. Did I get that right?

little tip for anyone trying to learn how to rev match, it's much more forgiving shifting from a higher gear like 6th to 5th... rather then trying from say, 2nd to 1st lol. i nearly launched myself over the house trying low gear... once you get it you get it, it's pretty easy and becomes second nature after awhile.

I was 20 and on my 4th stick shift car when I bought my first bike, although I had ridden bikes before. In a car you leave rubber on the road when you downshift without rev matching, so you figure it out pretty quickly without hurting yourself. It is hard for me to imagine getting on a bike with no prior clutch/shifting experience. Still, it doesn't seem that complicated. Of course once you are familiar with your bike it should be second nature. If I hopped on a new bike I would be careful while getting the feel of it.

To engage "Loop Mode" just rev and hold it at redline while holding in the clutch, get into a full tuck with one foot still on the ground, make sure its in 1st gear, and immediately and fully release the clutch! To engage "Launch Control" and attain the yeetus maximus, hold the revs at something reasonable while holding the clutch in, make sure its in first gear, and balance the friction zone of your clutch with your throttle as you always do, and try not to burn your clutch out or loop it!

However be sure to relieve your clutch carefully.

I was just asked about this subject. My buddy bought my old DRZ SM and hasn't been riding long. He wanted to know when I down shift. I said it all depends. Depends on if I know I'm coming to a complete stop or if the light may change on my approach, or if I'm first in line? All depends. Also depends on if I'm approaching a corner or roundabout. Soon I'll take him out for some instructional rides. Be fun to get the KTM and DRZ on the same roads. The old Suzuki is a great bike to learn on. Can learn throttle blipping, sliding and give it all the beans without worries. It's the perfect adult beginner bike. I do miss the all the flat out antics on the 400. Been on two wheels exclusively for the last year and a half, and the thing that I still can't quite nail down is downshifting properly while also applying the front brake. Keeping constant pressure on the lever while also blipping the throttle has proven... difficult. I usually either end up stabbing the front brake if I actually try it, say screw it and downshift while using the rear brake, or say screw it even harder and downshift once I'm stopped if I'm slowing down hard enough that needing the front brake is more important at that moment than downshifting.

@qvor1996
@qvor1996 14 күн бұрын
TL;DR It's a bad habit. Always stay in gear. If you cant rev match, just use clutch slip - clutch it, down a gear, slowly release the clutch. Great method if you are new or not confident enough to rev match. Gives you stopping power, you can do it while using the front brake (as no throttle input is needed) and you get the habit of being always in gear. In your case instead of pulling the clutch in 4th you can try this: while decelaring in 4th, clutch slip to 3rd, then to 2nd gear and pull in the clutch to come to a complete stop. Then find neutral and wait for the green light. Why is it good to be always in gear? Well if you think about it if the transmission and engine are not connected to the rear wheel, you basically riding a bycicle, you lose a huge amount of stability and control over the motorcycle. Stay safe

(1st year rider question) It seems like a key concept concerning the lugging and "correct" gear choice is the engine power band. I imagine it's different for all bikes but, @yammie is there some rule of thumb regarding the best RPM to maintain? I know its not a simple answer of course. My hypothesis is to keep the rpm midway between some lower limit (lugging zone) and the upper limit ( too much vibration/redline approach). Any thought on this fellow riders?

blip just before you shift, you're trying to raise the engine speed to the same speed as your transmission in order to make it a smoother switchover. Roll off your throttle to help decelerate a bit (bikes don't weigh much it actually helps a lot more than people think) Clutch in to disconnect Engine>Transmission Blip to increase engine speed Drop a gear and smoothly release clutch if it helps people understand it better the way i pictured it is the higher rpms are kind of a "safety net" to help catch your transmission speed and bring it down smoothly instead of just dumping it

Yammie, what is wrong with coming up to a red light and just holding the clutch and the brakes and slowing the bike down with the brakes and going all the way down to first gear matching the speed of first gear using the brakes to slow down the bike as opposed to cycling through each gear one by one?

riding a geared 50cc motorcycle you need to be good shifting it perfectly for a uphill or you will lose or your all your power. most the time you have to shift down to 4th gear to even get a up a hill 5th and 6th just aren't powerful enough

Downshifting 101: Make sure that, whatever gear you're in, you're moving at the max speed of that gear. Once you're up to speed, while leaning as far forward over the front of the motorcycle as possible, in an effort to get as much weight off of the transmission as possible. Then, when you're ready to downshift, grab and squeeze both of the levers as quickly and as hard as possible. Repeat as necessary.

Question ?? Can you just hold down the shift lever and downshift until you’re in the gear you want and then let go out the shift lever?
@yourepicbro1467
@yourepicbro1467 5 күн бұрын
I assume with "shift lever" you mean clutch lever, but yes you can. For me, it all depends on the situation, like sometimes you may need to slow down or come to a stop fast while having to shift down one or multiple gears, and there is no time to really do the rev-matching. I also find it difficult to do while applying the front brake, so in those situations, I just skip the rev-matching and shift down to the desired gear with the clutch pulled in. I also want to mention that in my country, we have to take riding lessons and exams to be able to ride a motorcycle, and rev-matching is not a part of this whatsoever. So it's definitely NOT a must.

@@yourepicbro1467 Yes I’m a beginner so I’m still learning all the correct terms. that’s true, rev matching wasn’t taught in my msf course either but everyone is always talking about rev matching so it’s starting to get me confused on whether or not it’ll do damage to my bike if I don’t rev match. Thank you!

@xXKtLy2223 Well, then welcome to the community! The fun thing is that you learn as you go, so you can put certain things into practice right away. As far as rev-matching goes, the two main reasons I do it is because, in a way, it certainly does help with shifting, and the sound is just amazing too. It may take a while to get the timing right, especially when you have to do it manually, but that's just a matter of practice. Mine aren't always butter smooth either. Ride safe!

Please add the habit of applying a bit of brake to signal to the cagers behind you that you are slowing down IF you’re not actively using the brakes simultaneously to come to a stop.

In addition to a bit of braking, a gadget like a "Brake Free LED Brake Light" mounted on the helmet, which lights up when it experiences deceleration momentum, can also help in communicating the braking to following traffic. It's not connected to the bike in any way and works purely off an accelerometer, so the rider can't mess up or forget to use it as long as it's turned on.

Unfortunately rev matching by blipping the throttle is an incomplete and dangerous technique in itself, because it does not involve using the brake, but you slow down pretty effectively on a motorcycle. Eventually some car will run into the back of you, sooner or later. The complete technique involves using the rear brake as well during downshifting and rev matching, now having to coordinate both arms and legs. The rear brake push will light up the rear brake light and warn cars behind you you are slowing down, it is paramount to one's safety if they are to use this technique. Rev matching is fun and effective, however not necessary. Some people just coast and use the brakes, or can just rev match by slowly releasing the clutch after the downshift to give the transmission enough time to match the revs of engine and wheels. While not as fun or smooth, they are both far less complicated which has a lot of value in itself. Finally, if you are to brake really effectively you will have to utilize the front brake, in which case you will downshift and rev match by controlled release of the clutch anyway. May as well use this technique all the time if you are to keep things simple.

Yes. This is what I do when I'm coasting and about to turn, I'll usually already have my turning signal on, I'll be in neutral, I'll shift up once into 2nd gear and tap my front brake to get my speed into the upper 20s, slowly releasing the clutch as I start going into my turn. I like doing this because I light up my tail light, and I split up my braking power between both wheels. I don't like downshifting while using the back brake because if I let the clutch out too quick I can lose my back tire.

It's probably not a common thing but I saw this helmet brake light that will detect any deceleration like engine braking and light up. Might be useful if you rely on engine braking and forget to tap the brakes.

this thing or rev matching want taught i just figure out by my self and its way less work and easier to do so, its the way i do it. or if im lazy i dont release clutch between gears just drop gears to match my speed and if light goes green again i slow release clutch and keep going.
@christosswc
@christosswc 17 күн бұрын
@@Burden82 The latter is what most people do, I prefer to slowly release the clutch on each downshift to match, allowing me to use the front brake at the same time, whilst also occasionaly rev matching with the throttle for fun, depending on my mood. Despite the popularity of this topic amongs bike enthusiasts, the reality is the vast majority of bikers on the street never bothered with learning blipping on downshifts and they go on about their riding just fine using said techniques.

that's the suggested speed man, or the "maximum safe speed". they make those calculations with a ball-bank meter, and do not have the capabilities (or flaws) of a motorcycle in mind when making them. I judge myself on how well I can negotiate corners, not by how fast I am going. Its the better way to learn as well, because I can tell you now - you negotiate a turn faster when you stay on the bike than when you don't stay on it. besides, all I really want to do (usually) is beat traffic, and I can do that on a motorcycle with a top speed of 65mph.
