জামালপুর ও বগুড়ার দুর্গম যমুনা নদীর ধু-ধু বালুচর। প্রমত্তা যমুনা বর্তমানে যৌবন হারিয়ে ফেলায় ধু-ধু বালুচর জেগে উঠেছে এবং বিশাল এলাকায় গড়ে উঠেছে মহিষের বাথান। চরের তৃণভূমিতে রাখালেরা খোলা আকাশের নিচে ভ্রাম্যমাণ বাথানে একত্রিত হয়ে মহিষকে সবুজ ঘাস খাওয়াচ্ছেন। চরে মহিষ পালন করে মালিকরা হচ্ছেন স্বাবলম্বী।
এদিকে দুর্গম চরে রাখালদের থাকার তেমন ভালো ব্যবস্থা নেই। মহিষের বাথানের পাশেই নদীঘেঁষা বালুচরে চাষি ও রাখালেরা ঝুপড়ি ঘর তুলছেন। মহিষগুলো লালনপালন করাই তাদের কাজ। তারা ঝুপড়ি ঘর তুলে সেখানে কোনো রকমে গাদাগাদি করে থাকছেন। মহিষের সঙ্গেই যেন তাদের ঘর-সংসার। মহিষ পালনকে ঘিরেই চলছে তাদের জীবন-জীবিকা।
খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা যায়, যমুনার বিশাল এলাকা নিয়ে অবস্থিত এই বাথানগুলোর এক প্রান্তে নদী রয়েছে, যেজন্য খামারিরা মহিষগুলোকে পানি পান করানো ছাড়াও গোসল করানোর সুবিধা পাচ্ছে। জামালপুর, মানিকগঞ্জ, শেরপুর ও বগুড়া জেলা থেকে একত্রিত হয়ে বিভিন্ন চরাঞ্চলে মহিষের বাথান নিয়ে অবস্থান করছে রাখাল ও মালিকেরা।
স্থানীয়রা জানান, কাক-ডাকা ভোর থেকে শুরু হয় মহিষ ও রাখালদের কর্মযজ্ঞ। মহিষের দুধ দোয়ানো, নৌকায় করে গ্রাহকদের কাছে দুধ পাঠানো, আর দুপুর পর্যন্ত মহিষগুলোকে মাঠে চড়ানো। এরপর মধ্যাহ্নভোজ। বিকালে আবার মহিষ চড়ানো। রাখালদের সঙ্গে মহাজনের নিয়োগকৃত ঘোষালরাও থাকেন। রোদ-বৃষ্টি উপেক্ষা করেই চলছে এসব। এ যেন প্রাকৃতিক শিল্পপ্রতিষ্ঠান।
কারখানায় যেমন শ্রমিক-কর্মচারীর শ্রমের বিনিময়ে পণ্য উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে, ঠিক তেমনই চাষি, রাখালের শ্রমে মহিষ থেকে উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে দুধ। জীবন-জীবিকা, সুখ-দুঃখ, হাসি-কান্না ও চরাঞ্চলে থাকার নানা অভিজ্ঞতার কথা হয় রাখাল ও মহিষের মালিকদের সঙ্গে।

Their job is to rear the buffaloes. They have built huts and are piling up there somehow. Their house and family is with the buffalo. Their livelihood revolves around buffalo rearing.
On investigation, it is known that these Bathans, which are located in a large area of Yamuna, have a river at one end, due to which the farmers are getting the facility of bathing the buffaloes apart from drinking water. Shepherds and owners from Jamalpur, Manikganj, Sherpur and Bogra districts are staying with buffalo herds in different grazing areas.
Locals said that the work of buffaloes and herdsmen started from the crow-calling dawn. Milking the buffaloes, sending the milk to the customers by boat, and driving the buffaloes to the fields till noon. Then lunch. Buffalo riding again in the afternoon. The shepherds are also accompanied by the ghoshals employed by the moneylenders. These are going on regardless of sun and rain. This is like a natural industry.
Just as products are produced in exchange for the labor of workers in factories, milk is produced from buffaloes with the labor of farmers and shepherds. Livelihood, happiness and sorrow, laughter and tears and various experiences of living in pastures are discussed with shepherds and buffalo owners.
