I found out one of my musical heroes passed away, Mylon LeFevre. My first memory of a concert was Mylon & Broken Heart. I’m not sure if it was my first concert or not but I remember going with my baby sister to our church at the time, Huffman Assembly in Birmingham. I can picture inside the sanctuary, the smoke and 80’s glory of lights and rock-n-roll gear.
My Mom listened to a lot of Mylon’s music. At some point in life she started signing every brithday card and letter at camp she gave to me with four words, “love God, hate sin.” The title of a Mylon song. About a decade a go, I recorded a cover of that song. It’s a masterpiece if I say so myself. Thanks Stephen Leiweke for obliging me and turning my desire to make the cover happen in an artful offering that as of today, just got a bit sweeter.
To this day every time my sister does my makeup and tells me “look up”, she knows I’m going to reply “trains up in the sky”. It literally happened a few weeks ago.
Mylon’s circles swung wide. He wrote a song Elvis recorded…was in the middle of 80’s CCM….became a preacher and hung out with Kenneth Copeland…not to mention his son-n-law Peter’s band the “Newsboys”. No doubt he influenced many lives in his 79 years of life.
When I was 11 or 12, I met Mylon at a Fire By Night Youth Ministry conference in Tulsa…back when the conference was held at the Westin downtown. I asked him for his autograph. He told me “no”. It wasn’t cause he was busy or headed somewhere but rather it was his conviction. I remember being a bit embarrassed at the time by his reply (and the long reasoning behind it he shared with me). But, I have no doubt that experience shaped me as well.
Once Mylon came to know Jesus he really had one desire. “More, more, more, more, more. I want to be more. I need to be more like Jesus.”
His journey over the years proves his quest.
Years back when Dana Key passed I had multiple friends share how their theology had been shaped by the music of Degarmo & Key. That revelation impacted me in a profound way and I believe shifted something in my own music. Today, as some tears stream down my face I can tell you, “My theology was shaped by the music of Mylon LeFevre.” The words “thank you” just don’t even feel enough….so I will join with King Jesus in telling you what I know you’ve already heard, “well done”.
As a Mom, I’ve continued in my Mom’s footsteps. I sign every card to my boys “Love God, hate sin”. Last month, we were at the Frist and Rhythm had made something. As he was thinking of a message that could go on it you can bet my heart swelled when he told me put “love God, hate sin” on his art. From one generation to another…thanks Mylon.
That train up in the sky came for this man of God. He is in a better place. I bet the worship in Heaven just got a little more rock-n-roll. Until it’s my turn to join, I’ll be sure to:
