In this first volume of our series on Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche shares his reflections on the great master. From an interview recorded in Shechen Monastery, Nepal, in 2017.
ABOUT CHOGYAM TRUNGPA RINPOCHE
Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987) was the 11th descendent in the line of Trungpa tulkus, important teachers of the Kagyü lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Renowned for its strong emphasis on meditation practice, the Kagyü lineage is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition to being a key teacher within the Kagyü lineage, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche was also trained in the Nyingma tradition, the oldest of the four schools, and was an adherent of the rimay or “non-sectarian” movement within Tibetan Buddhism. The rimay movement aspired to bring together and make available all the valuable teachings of the different schools, free of sectarian rivalry. Throughout his life, Trungpa Rinpoche sought to bring the teachings he had received to the largest possible audience. (Courtesy of Shambala.)
ABOUT KHYENTSE YANGSI RINPOCHE
Believed to be the reincarnation of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche was born in Nepal on the 30th of June 1993, as the son of Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche. Trulshik Rinpoche had numerous dreams and visions that clearly indicated the identity of the incarnation. Later, His Holiness the Dalai Lama confirmed that this child is the tulku of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. In December 1996, at Maratika cave, Trulshik Rinpoche performed the ceremony of offering a name and robes to the young tulku. His actual enthronement took place at Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal, in December 1997. Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche is being educated in the quiet of Bhutan under the guidance of Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche and is currently following a complete nine-year shedra course.

When Chogyam Rinpoche was in Boulder, CO I lived there very young at 18 years old at the beginning and grew up there after at first running away from home. I became a Sufi under Samuel Lewis's group (Sufi Sam) from San Francisco with many great teachers who would stop by and teach. Never met Sam for he died a long time before but met his close students and they would send to us many great teachers from Indian Tantrics, Tibetan Lamas, Peace Pilgrim, and host of other teachers. I would go see Chogyam talk at Naropa University and always respected him and read his books. His house was a few blocks down from ours on Mapleton Ave. Interesting!

Thank you Yangsi Rinpoche, SO beautifully stated - couldn't agree more with every single word - forget the "crazy wisdom". When I reflect daily upon the sacrifices that CTR made for a Fool like myself always brings me to my knees with humble Gratitude and Awe. He gave my Life profound meaning.

I used to guard the front desk in the Vidyadhara's house in Boulder (Kalapa Court). Each time I was there the sense of peace pervaded the atmospher, no matter what would happen around me. It was a strange experience the strong quality of which I remembered years later when I thought of that time. That memory still pervades my mind because it is more than memory - it is the presence of thusness.

Tashi deleg, Yangshi Rinpoche. I thank you deeply from the center of my heart. For I agree that he was a True Pioneer, a Planetary Master Hero, and as you said the Dorge Dradul was the only Teacher, Tibetan or otherwise to speak of victory over war. I for one can only offer him the inner space of my heart. Peace to the presence of him and his truest associations. Thank you Yangshi Rinpoche. Om Ah Hum.

The only thing I have to disagree with Yangsi Rinpoche is that not all teachers are confused and incapable of teaching Westerners. DZongsar Khyentse Rinpoche is exceptionally capable of teaching students from ALL parts of the world and of explaining the essence of Dharma while taking into account all aspects of today's world. And there are many other teachers that I know but are less famous.. But definitely, most lamas cling to culture and tradition in many ways that are not necessarily skilful.

Dzongsar is such a great teacher for westerners. He clarifies things I have tried to understand for months in just a few sentences. I wish more teachers would teach clear, culture-free dharma. I love learning about Tibetan and other cultures related to buddhism, but sometimes it can be an obstacle to learning or clearly understanding concepts. I am so thankful he is around.

He knew he was going to be around for only a short and heard about some comments he made about it to his wife, so he put all of himself into his work in teaching people not only how to follow some dogmatic rules but to discover goodness in themselves and then, if they can, spread it around in whatever way they can.

How difficult; to attempt to truly transform another culture integrating the most advance knowledge of “Dharma” by means of Teaching; Transferring through the view an understanding of an “others”. I know Dharma was known on every level on this continent yet it was truly almost completely lost at that point in time. Thank You ❤️ and long love Art: a valid and beautiful dharma

I am afraid that by copying Trungpa Rinpoche he was talking about Sogyal Rinpoche, who, as I was told when I met him at Marpa House, was not a Rinpoche but an attendant to Khandro Tsering. It was a big surprise to me years later that he developed a giant Dharma organization as a teacher. He put out good books but what Trungpa Rinpoche did was develop personal teaching relationships with many of the students. In the short 10 years that I knew him I managed to be around him enough to receive on the spot teachings from him that pertained to some confusing situation I found myself in. When I became nervous he would teach me patience. When I showed some wisdom he would approve. Sometimes he made gentle fun of my stupidity, like when I didn't know which leg to hold as he was getting on his horse. Right now I can think of two main things he was showing: the personal picture or how to work with ourselves through the Dharma and attain some degree of realization, and an image of the world which appreciates quality, elegance, etc. all the good things in being alive. It was easier for most students to relate to the first one, because as Europeans we are such guilty and self-abnegating creatures always ready to whip ourselves. We think that this will get rid of our ego, but it is just another face of egotism. It has taken me years to understand what happened to me, but I know I learned from him something that is extremely good in my - recognition of bodhicitta, at least to some extent.

Trungpa Rinpoche may have been a great master but his vajra regent wasn't and his son mukpo isn't. And whats up with all the scandals in the shambhala organization? Edit: Yangsi also did say at the end that people shouldn't try to copy him. Thats the mistakes his regent and son made.

Wow! From the mouth of Dilgo Khyentse’s yangsi no less! That in itself just adds to my sadness and disappointment. What an inept attempt at whitewashing, the equivalent in history being negationism or denialism.

First, its sad to see a so called "great master" seem to be so sheltered to have no idea of all the scandals (sex, physcial abuse, alcoholism, drug use etc. ) surrounding Trungpa Rinpoche, his regent (who died of AIDS from the sex scandals), his son Mukpo (sex scandals again) and Shambala organization itself. Get real. Don't ignore those issues like the don't exist and try to explain them away as "Pure Wisdom" which a just a childish excuse. If you can't accept that some Tibetan teachers make mistakes and should be held accountable what chance do you have to hold yourself or future Rinpoche's accountable for their mistakes. This simple talk makes me not even want to listen to you again because clearly you ignore or try to explain away obvious problems in the Dharma or by Dharma practicioners. Its the same flaw in all self proclaimed spiritual teachers the get caught in power, or sex, or money or all three in someway or another they are taught they are enlightened beings and can't make any mistakes. Its a very slippery slope once you fall its is very hard to make your way back up. The interviewer is a joke. Just blindly agreeing because its a "high lama" assuming everything he says must be true. Think for yourself. The Buddha himself said "Don't believe everything just because I say it. Test it. Put into practice and see if it works. " Even the Dalai Lama said himself said "if a Lama tells you something that contradicts something or doesn't seem right don't do it."

Self proclaimed? Who is self proclaimed. The tulkus mentioned here are recognized and are holders of a pure-siddha-lineage. I have not met Trungpa Rinpoche. And yes his activities were very unorthodox. But, if one is really concerned with wisdom that the Buddha and the mahasiddhas pointed to, he was an attained master. Why? Because he practiced - even when he was very young he did a dark retreat (no lights completely in a dark cave) for 3 years. He transformed a majority of his students. Even Gurus are humans and their karma and actions are their own. But, it would be unwise to weigh him like a neat cut new age yoga guru!

You're absolutely right. Trungpa was a greedy fake masters, that neglected his own vows of bodhisattva to create more sufferings around him. A shame, a "pure" shame for buddhism that's what he was. And so called lamas should recognize evidence, instead of making him the hero he was not at all... He never wrote any books. Their quality are so unequal, that you can't ignore it's not the same hand that wrote them. "Practice of the tibetan way" which is brilliant, has been written by an english studient, and all the others, as Shambhala or Crazy wisdom, are genuine bullshits to badly feed new-age consumers of psychedelics, and no more.
