Yanmar YM 1700 Tractor. What?? No Water Pump!!! Episode 12

Hope this information helps other Yanmar 1700 tractor owners. While my mechanic was removing the head to replace the o-rings that melted at the piston cylinder walls from overheating, he discovered the front fan/belt pulley wasn’t a water pump. I had him add a Yanmar 2200 water pump and conversion plate. Also, while he was working on the engine, I had him add a temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge. Thanks for watching! Have a YM165 ,same,no water pump.Not too much of a problem,just have to keep topping up with cold water.A pump,would be better,though.

I just bought a YM 1600 and Hoye Tractor info stated that it did not have a water pump, but mine does. Now I know that someone did a kit conversion. Mystery solved. Thank you.

Sounds like a good plan. Once I installed the water pump conversion, my engine temperature ranges from 130-180 on hot days if I’m running the bush hog. Thanks for the comment and watching!

I have a YM1700 with a 2TR17 engine but do not see the oil cap. I see the filter, the drain plug, and the dipstick, but no place to add new oil. Anyone have some knowledge for a young piddler? Thanks

On my Yanmar I have to put oil in where the dip stick screws out.

@@saltycountry5459 I was thinking that was the case but hoping that I was missing something. That dipstick hole is about 1/4" in diameter. Might take a while but it will do. Thank you so much!

My dip stick screws into the block. It about an inch hole. You should have another place to put oil in. Post a picture of each side of your engine and maybe someone can help.

A water cooled tractor engine with no pump? Never woulda thunk it. How does it circulate without one? Osmosis?

I’m still not sure how it worked without a water pump. My mechanic said that was the first diesel engine he had ever worked on that didn’t have a water pump.

@@saltycountry5459 I have a 3 cylinder yanmar badged as the John deere 850 and have learned that yanmar engines have a flaw I would call it in the cylinder head where they crack upon overheating between the valve and injector ports causing water intrusion into cylinders. Lots of people have experienced this. Glad that wasn't your problem. I had to buy the head ($1000) dang.... yours should be good now especially since you added gauges and can keep an eye on temps. Kudos!

Its circulated using thermodynamics. Not a very good setup. Especially in hot weather

Thermodynamics? Convection? Perhaps they are telling us that heat rises and cold sinks, and the cooling fluid will circulate on its own? So, these compact models without a water pump are not for serious work. ? ... I am ready to install a Water Pump Conversion Kit on my YM1500D, to do somewhat serious work. Interesting information from another video: ... "The ratio of anti freeze affected the convection cooling system. I was using about a 30% mixture and add a bit for good measure. Wrong, it will not allow the convection system to work. I dropped the ratio to about 20% and the cooling is back to normal."

@jackboltsvolts8986 very interesting information. When I overheated my 1500 I was bush hogging on a hot day and melted the o-rings on the piston sleeves. The water pump kit and adding a temperature gauge was a game changer. You will be glad that you added the water pump. Thanks for the enlightening information!

@@saltycountry5459 hey, contact this fella on you tube “ mechanic Dave” segment you would be interested in , my Hinomoto E15D was over heating , it does have a water pump tho, good Raiditor +cap, good thermostat , just added a water Expansion tank in good nick ,to my bad girl bingo ! No more overheating….
