Yet it used to be. I remember having lathe/ machining taught 1956-1959 and teacher did his own smelting// Local (Bayside, Trenton) had welding and machining shop until about 1995 when it was sold off. School now has over 1000 students!!!!
@patverum90519 ай бұрын
Exactly, tech college 1959-1963 taught this type of material handling, welding,smelting,casting, soldering, turning,smithing etc. Safety concerns put an end to it perhaps? I used to turn large asbestos pipe to fit resistance wire ,for variable resistors, no mask, no extractor....76 yrs old now,escaped any ill effects?

Nice video but don't keep stiring and scraping the dross off while it's heating up. The dross helps keep the hydrogen out of the melt reducing the porosity. Do it just before you pour and you can always throw a little borax on top to help. Melt fast and pour quick with Aluminium. 🙂

Or while your at it why not pony up 50k usd for a used live tooling cnc, another 10k in tooling, and a proper melt furnace, and better stock material? HE DOESNT HAVE IT.. and hes not gonna chop up what he does have when what he is doing works just fine. When you post a vid making what he does with what hes got then you will get respect.

In Britain, nothing like this is taught in schools. The health and safety nuts forbid it. We don't make things in our country, we just import it ( which explains our apauling trade gap) 😢

You are right. In school we are taught to use flux while melting aluminum to remove the dross & contaminates. I see pit marks in your turning. That's porosity caused by not removing contaminants. Weak part!

To make the Allen head in the end of your bolt I’ve had better luck using regular bolt and hammering a small bolt head in there because they’re the same as an Allen wrench get you a 1/4 or an 1/8 bolt head something that straight that you can hold with a pair of pliers and beat the crap out of it. That’s just me though this is your baby.
