Lieutenant Colonel John Frost led the 2nd Parachute Battalion in the assault during the Battle of Arnhem, a key component of Operation Market Garden in World War II. Parachuting behind enemy lines Frost and his men had the job to secure the crucial Arnhem Bridge. Despite overwhelming odds and fierce German resistance, Frost’s leadership and unwavering determination turned this mission into a legendary stand.

I used to think the entire operation was a failure. Then I dug into it and found 60% or so of the Dutch people were liberated. I watched a 70s documentary produced for television about the battle at Overloon that had so much great information from the people that were there. It changed my opinion. It's here on youtube, great stuff. Thanks yarnhub for another great video! *EDIT - thanks for the constructive comments, looks like I need to read more into the country as a whole during the last year of the war compared to focusing on a single operation. That’s actually a matter of debate. Montgomery is famous in his opinion that operation Market Garden was “90% successful”. This is just a half of reality. We were two accounts about negotiators: the British POW you mentioned - ‘Stan’ Halliwell of the 1st Parachute Squadron and a German guy. Halliwell was nearly shot when he walks across the bridge and he didn't go back to the Germans. German guy speaks with the head of sappers Eric McKey east of the bridge. It was Mackay who sent the German back genuinely not understanding the German's intentions. The German prisoners captured the day before were giving the British a lot of trouble because of the lack of food. In the classic movie, these two events were combined into one.

What a amazing story. Those British paratroopers were so brave during the Battle of Arnhem. You have to have respect for a outnumbered force to hold out against the SS for that long. Sad how these young men thought they would be in Berlin by Christmas and died with that dream. It would take thousands of British, Soviet, and American lives for Berlin to fall. Another great animated project Yarnhub. Love the scene in the beginning with the C47s and the end scene with the burning city. Thanks for this great work. @Jambassador
@Jambassador 21 сағат бұрын
@@quintapusyt This is true of many of the standard Wermacht troops, but the same doesn't often apply to the to Waffen-SS troops, who operated separately from the German Heer and were ultra-loyal to Hitler's Nazi fanaticism. The relationship between the standard Wermacht troops and the Waffen-SS troops was a complex one. They engaged in many shared offensives, but there was certainly a degree of competition both overt and unspoken, on several levels between them. Firstly, the SS usually were given priority for re-supply and receiving new weapons (eg. the Tiger tank in the Kursk offensive), and they also frequently acted arrogantly in the utilisation of routes of advance, barging ahead of Wehrmacht forces - such as during the Bulge counter -offensive in Belgium. These factors generated alot of irritation and anger among the Wermacht Officers. The propensity of certain SS units to perpetrate atrocities was also a cause of friction at times, as some Wehrmacht Officers expressly forbade crimes against civilians. On the other hand, civilian mistreatment was also widely pepetrated by the Wehrmacht on the Eastern front particularly, due to the brutal hatred between Germans and Slavic peoples and the higher propensity for atrocities on both sides on the Eastern Front.

13:39 The promised relief were Polish paratroopers from Independent Paratrooper Brigade. Some soldiers were dropped at 18th and 19th of september, main force was scheaduled to be dropped at 20th, but it was postponed one day due to weather. Market Garden was a disaster and Polish general Stanisław Sosabowski was wrongfully blamed for it's failure.

This was beautifully told. The channel continues to deliver magical narration and storyteling. It always is a true pleasure to watch these videos. The braveness of those paratroopers should never go silently but should always be remembered, it was just an amazing feat of bravery, resilience and grit!

3:25 the car is a Opel Olympia I think. I’m from Germany and my Grandpa told me that back in the day my Grand-Grandparents had such a car and the Soviet’s stole it and dragged it through the village wheels attached ( theft security). After they shoot a giant hole in the Barn-Wall (you can see the hole even today). Absolutely nice Video 😂😂❤❤❤

The concrete base of bridge still holds the scars. However the actual bridge was destroyed by USAAF B-26's bombers on the 7th of October to prevent Germans sending in more reinforcements towards the fighting on "the island". This was the area between Arnhem and Nijmegen which became the front after the failure of MG. The bridge was rebuilt in 1950.

You could tell the story of the 3 brazilian soldiers Who fight againts a large number of germans, even without ammo, they dont accepeted the order for surrender and fighting to to end. The germans thought that they were fighting against a platton. A german soldier, recognized the brave of these 3 soldiers and asked to buried them, in montese, italy.

Brazil was co-belligerent against the Germans alongside the Allies. I've always thought Brazil's contribution has been one of the undisclosed stories to the War.

That was their own fault as they completely ignored that they were landing on 2 SS Panzer Divisions that were stationed at Arnhem. About surviving POWs, many of them probably did survive the war. The Western front wasn't as savage as the Eastern front and most POWs were treated well and made it until the end of the war in both sides but, of course, there are some exceptions.
