I own this geme. IMO, the Yashica Mat124G is the perfect balance between price, quality and portability. Yes, they are better TLRs, but most of them are chunky, or very expensive (hello Rolleiflex...) or less well made. Great video, congrats.

I love my TLR. I like how they can be stealthy for street work. Looking down keeps people from noticing what you are doing. A lot of people have no idea what you are holding, let alone shooting photos of them. Plus, square format is my favorite. It takes one step out of composing.

One of Yashica's subcontractors was a company called Tomioka Optical (prewar, it made sights for bombers and other aircraft), and it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Yashica before Yashica started making cameras with Zeiss. Therefore, it can be said that Tomioka made the Carl Zeiss lens for Yashica/Contax (Y/C). At that time, the concept of bokeh was not understood by Germans, and it is assumed that Tomioka Optical was the one who taught Zeiss that it was an effective element. When Yashica went into financial trouble and merged with Kyocera, it became Kyocera Optical, and when Kyocera withdrew from the camera business, Tomioka's blood supply disappeared. The Yashica 124G and Mamiya C330 were the last two-lens cameras made in Japan.

Mark Power’s “The Shipping Forecast” was photographed on 6x6 (black and white) and is a beautiful body of work, you get a decent selection of images from it on his website. I have a Yashicaflex Model C, so a more entry level version of what you have, but I love that camera, my only issue was that my lab wasn’t the best for dev and scans so I never felt like I was getting the full potential out of that camera that I knew it was capable of. Looking through the waist level viewfinder was always a blast and I would do it just to look at things and not even make a picture.

The 124g is one of my favorite medium format cameras. It closes down to a small form factor and has such a great lens. I use a Bay-1 to 52mm adapter ring (Amazon) to have the full range of 52mm filters and lens hood to help with the contrast on B&W film. A highly recommended camera that has risen three times its price since I bought mine. Camera prices are just crazy these days.

TLRs are a pleasure to use, this Yashica has such a good lens, the only thing with TLRs isn't the 6x6, not my favorite but I miss it sometimes, the fact that most of the time you will be composing from a lower angle

TLRs are a great change of pace / approach for photographing. I like to use it as a refresher almost if my photography is starting to feel a bit stale. I also just like to use one sometimes, to enjoy the process. The one I have right now was my great grandfathers; it's a Soligor with, I think, only a triplet. I'm not even sure it's single coated to be honest. But it's great. I have a Rolleicord Triotar that I should get fixed up to use; just haven't gotten around to it. Looks like there are a lot of great storefronts in Holyoke. I kind of want to go and check it out around sunset to see how that affects things. Thanks for the vid, amigo.

No, this lens is most likely not produced by Zeiss. There was a cooperation from 1972 onwards, but Yashica had their own lens production, and the characteristics of this more modern Yashinon lens (a 4 elements in 3 groups design) are very different from a Zeiss Tessar (as someone else pointed out, the bokeh of the Yashinon is very different to older Zeiss lenses). And chromatic aberrations have nothing to do with coating, but with the lens design itself (contrast, flare resistance and color cast do depend on the coating). But, after all, this Yashinon is a rather good lens with astonishing image quality for this lens design, with good overall sharpness even at f4, but lacking the "punch" of other similar designs (like the Zeiss Tessar, which has less sharp edges at f4, but still more punch in the center). You can't go wrong with a Yashica Mat-124 G! (What I say about the Yashinon is for the modern variant in the Mat-124 G; earlier Yashinons look different and have a more old-style look, more similar to the Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar and the Zeiss Tessar found in Rolleicords.)

I had a 124G, it was solid. My older eyes struggled with the focus screen though, so I eventually swapped it out for a Minolta Autocord. I think if I had known about Rick Oleson's focus sceens back then, I would have kept the 124. I am still itching to try a C220F too, due to the ultra close MFD and better coatings. Great photos - Portra 800 is my favorite color MF stock.

hi i am a new viewer from the Fuji GW690ii review video you made. and i have a question, i am a 135 shooter and looking to go to mideum format. i like the fully mannual of the Fuji GW690ii but i also want more frame and light meter of the Fuji GA645. is there anything in between? 90mm fixed focal length is not an issue, i usually only use 50mm on my camera
@RobbieMaynardCreates
@RobbieMaynardCreates 2 ай бұрын
In terms of 6x9, there is not a ton of options. Especially with a meter. 6x4.5, 6x6 and 6x7 are far more common and will sometimes have built in meters. Dont get bogged down in a built in meter. They are usually not accurate. Use the light meter app on your phone for free and be patient

The thing about YT is that the stupidest comments are repeated mindlessly and then adopted as fact. The reason that there are so many Yashicamats around is that they were sold with very little change from 1960 to 1986, and were the cheapest TLR on the market (if you skip the toys and 3-element lenses models). Among 4-element lens (Tessar copy) TLRs, the lens in the 124G was the same as that in the 1960 model. It was not designed by Zeiss. Zeiss would close its doors before making what tests out as the worst piece of glass put in that class of TLR. That doesn't make the 124G worthless, as the mere size of the negative insures a minimum level of quality. It's a camera which sold new for around $135 in its day, and was priced at $79.95 to unload the last run at B&H in 1989. Just keep its abilities, or lack thereof, in perspective, please, meaning that someone paying $400-600 for one on eBay is a working definition of a fool and his money are soon parted.

I appreciate the information. Seems like you have a lot of knowledge on these. Unfortunately, the reteric turns to reality if its repeated often enough. I agree with the proce gauging on these too. Hopefully people wont spend more than $300 on one of these but the fact is, since they aren't being made anymore and less in working order. People will always pay the premium

I am old enough to remember the YashicaMat 124G when it sold new in its last days of the late 1980’s. I have owned three of them which never gave me any mechanical issues, had one CLA’ed by Mark Hama and ended up selling it to help pay off my Rolleiflex which has also been CLA’ed. As far as quality in a YashicaMat 124G, it’s not bad but definitely not the best camera. By the time I got into professional photography in the early 1990’s, the TLR was on its way out, I used to go into the local camera store here in town to have my Bronica SQ serviced, around 1992, met an older photographer that was picking up his Mamiya C330 from repair, I was intrigued, and had to ask what type of camera. He told me, son, stick with your Bronica SLR, he said when you get the money buy a Hasselblad, he was telling me he was retiring soon and was going to use the Mamiya C330 until he retired. In my opinion, I think the Mamiya C330 with the 80mm 2.8 seems to be sharper than the YashicaMat 124G. Another You Tuber Imran Nuri just printed a 640 page book “Advice from America” entirely shot with the YashicaMat 124G. I do agree, they are a fun camera to use!
