Title: The Prophet's Marriage to Zaynab
The story of the marriage of our Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) to Zaynab bint Jahsh (raḍyAllāhu 'anha) is drenched in much controversy.
Many Non-Muslims consider it an infatuated love story between the Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) and the wife of his "adopted" son Zayd b. Ḥārithah (raḍyAllāhu 'anhu).
A topic so controversial that later Scholars of Islam completely turned away from addressing this subject in their books.
Join Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in this special episode of the Seerah of our Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) as he addresses this controversial subject head-on in an academic & analytical detail, in sha Allah!
A talk not to be missed!
Study the biography of the single greatest human being that ever walked the surface of this earth, whom Allah sent as a Mercy to Mankind.

Assalamu Alaikum. @Yasir Qadhir at the end of the video and also in the beginning you mention from the hadith that Ayesha (RA) and some others said that if the Prophet Muhammad (SM) were to hide any verse then it would be this verse of Sura Al-Ahzab verse 37. My point is, why cant this verse be the verse that our Prophet was actually hiding. This supports both points strongly but rather changes the whole point of what he(our prophet(sm)) was actually hiding. SO WHAT MY POINT IS THAT WHEN AYESHA (RA) SAID THAT PROPHET (SM) COULD HAVE HID IS EXACTLY WHAT OUR PROPHET HID FOR A LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME.And Prophet Muhammad (SM) did tht cause of emabarresment that you cannot marry someone who you got married to your stepson which is exactly what the the verse is followed with, "... And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they no longer have need of them" Al-Ahzab last part of verse 37.

Thank you so much Dr. Qadhi. When I first read the story I was also having trouble in my heart. But after listening to the whole thing, I understand it now. Our beloved prophet was a man amongst us who too had feelings and urges but he unlike us didn't act upon it and felt awkward. Allah rewarded him and fulfilled his feelings while keeping his station high among his companions.

Well, Respected Sir you have really wrapped up the whole incident with all the objectivity and I am glad that Islam has come out clean as a result. This lecture will obviously go a long way in slapping all those ugly blame games which have been haunting the pious life of our beloved Prophet. Moreover. as you rightly said, humanity needs a human role model who can guide us all by presenting the perfect model and at the same time doing so by living in the same real world as we do and facing the same emotions that we all come across and that is what makes the character of a real man. I am deeply thankful for your efforts and may Allah bless you with his love and mercy. Thanks once again.

I do not see any controversy in it. Prophet salAllahu alaye wassallam was a human and if Allah swt has tested him in every shape and form, it is up to Allah. Allah swt is the creator and owner of all knowledge and HIS sharia. If HE is the witness, no one else is needed. Just ponder on how people of Jannah will be married. It makes you understand. Allah knows the best. Priase to HIM and darood to Prophet salAllahu alaye wassallam.

This Seerah seems to want to emphasize that the prophet was a man who wanted to marry various women because he liked them - not because they actually were strategic alliances and had important reasons. For example, YQ mentions multiple times that the Prophet liked Joyinda (spelling?) and thus married her. He is basing this on Aisha's statement that she was jealous, etc. Aisha was a young and apparently fiery woman who seemed to be jealous quite a bit. It makes much more sense that Joyinda would marry the Prophet as an alliance to save her people. Same with the daughter of the Jewish clan, the daughter of Abu Sufiyan, the daughter of Abu Bakr and Omar, etc., all important alliances. Even the prophet's daughters were married in alliances, etc. This supports the fact that while married to Khadija, there was only 1 wife. But later, once he became a prophet and a leader, alliances became more important. This would also explain why the Prophet was permitted more wives than the other men.

Subhanallah version A is not authentic. This is what the scholars of our time said the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw Zaynab from behind a screen and that he was attracted to her and fell in love with her, and Zayd found out about that and began to dislike her, and he wanted to give precedence to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning her, so he divorced her so that he could marry her after him, none of that has been proven by means of any sound isnaad. The Prophets are of the highest status and are too chaste in heart and too noble and honourable in attitude to do any such thing. Moreover, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the one who had arranged her marriage to Zayd (may Allaah be pleased with him), and she was the daughter of his paternal aunt. If he had been attracted to her, he would have kept her for himself in the first place, especially since she was reluctant to marry Zayd and did not agree to it until the verse was revealed, then she agreed. This was the decree of Allaah which He arranged in order to abolish jaahili customs, and to show mercy to the people and make things easier for them, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw Zaynab from behind a screen and that he was attracted to her and fell in love with her, and Zayd found out about that and began to dislike her, and he wanted to give precedence to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning her, so he divorced her so that he could marry her after him, none of that has been proven by means of any sound isnaad. Personally, I have no issue with the prophet SAW having a liking for Xainab RA. But I have a huge problem with people saying that he wished for Zayd RA to divorce her. One is a normal human feeling that you can’t control but the other is a consciously made desire which is not befitting of a prophet.

Zainab(ra) was a beautiful woman and Ayesha(ra) considered Zainab(ra) as her peer in beauty. When Prophet Muhammad was sexually aroused by looking at a woman, he only went to Zainab's house and asked for sexual intercourse when she doing household work and satisfied himself(Sahi Muslim, 3240) and plus Prophet Muhammad was attracted to beautiful women as he himself has said: the things which he loved in this world are women and perfumes(Nisai, 3939, authentic)

Episode 52 + 69 Notes (Also posted this on EP52s comments as the FTFs are from both videos) Background to the Wives of the Prophet SAW The Prophet SAW was initially married to Khadijah RA and after her death. The Prophet SAW was not seen smiling for many months and he was recommended by Khawlah Bint Hakim RA to take another wife. She recommended him two women and the Prophet SAW decided to marry both. After them, the Prophet SAW married many other women. The Ummahatul Mu'minin are: 1. Khadijah Bint Khuwaylid 2. Sawdah Bint Zam’a 3. Aisha Bint Abu Bakr 4. Hafsa Bint Umar 5. Umma Salamah 6. Zaynab Bint Khuzaymah 7. Zaynab Bint Jahsh 8. Juwayriya Bint Al Harith 9. Umm Habiba 10. Safiyya Bint Huyayy 11. Maymunah Bint Al Harith I have already done notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhis Mothers of the Believers series. Check the comment sections under each video in that series on his MAIN YT channel. So i wont repost them here as its too much information. I will post the FTFs though Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA was the Prophet SAW’s favourite wife after Khadijah RA. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW actually had a dream that he would marry Aisha RA before he proposed. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA was the only virgin that the Prophet SAW married. Fun Trivia fact: Abu Bakr RA told Umar RA, that had the Prophet SAW not proposed to Hafsa RA, then he would not have turned him down. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA stated that Hafsa RA was her main competition amongst the wives of the Prophet SAW. The irony however is that, both of their fathers had this same trait. Fun Trivia fact: When Uthman RA wanted to copy the Mus’haf, he had to obtain it from Hafsa RA. Fun Trivia fact: Only two of the Prophet SAW’s wives died during his lifetime. Khadijah RA in Makkah and Zaynab Bint Khuzaymah RA in Medina. Fun Trivia fact: Zaynab RA’s mother, Hind Bint Awf who was a Non-Muslim is known as the most “noblest mother in law in the history of mankind” because she had 7 daughters from different marriages. All of whom went on to marry or give birth to Islamic luminaries. Zaynab RA and Maymuna RA married the Prophet SAW. Asma Bint Umays married Jaffar RA, Abu Bakr RA and Ali RA one after the other. Umm Fadl who married Al Abbas RA. Lubaba who married Al Walid and is the mother of Khalid Ibn Walid RA. Salma Bint Umays who married Hamza RA. Fun Trivia fact: Hamza RA has a daughter who was later adopted by Jaffar RA, her uncle, who was married to Asma Bunt Umays RA. Fun Trivia fact: Maymuna RA is the aunt of both Khalid RA and Al Abbas RA. Fun Trivia fact: Umm Salamah RA was the first lady to migrate to Medina. Fun Trivia fact: Umm Salamah RA had a deep love for her first husband Abu Salamah RA, to the extent that after her Iddah when Abu Bakr RA proposed to her, she rejected him. Fun Trivia fact: After the marriage of Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA was when the laws of Hijab were revealed. They were revealed after almost everything else. Fun Trivia fact: Khamr was made haram, after the Invasion of Banu Nadir and a short while before the marriage of Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW told Zayd Ibn Thabit RA to learn Hebrew. This was done so that he can interpret any letters the Prophet SAW receives from the Yahud. Zayd RA did this within 15 days. Fun Trivia fact: Zayd Ibn Thabit RA was he personal scribe of the Prophet SAW and complied the Qur’an after his death. His knowledge of the Qur’an was excellent. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA stated that, “the first time I saw Juwayriya RA, I hated her” and this was because Aisha RA knew, that the Prophet SAW would find her attractive. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA stated that, “I don’t know of any lady who brought more blessings to her tribe than Juwayriya RA”. This was because her entire tribe became Muslim. Fun Trivia fact: The chief of the Banu Mustaliq, Haritha Bin Abi Dirar fled and wasn’t captured by the Muslims. Fun Trivia fact: Umm Habiba RA had the most grandeur wedding out of all of the Wives of the Prophet SAW. This is because the Najashi did it in Abyssinia on behalf of the Prophet SAW. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA’s only love rival for the Prophet SAW was his wife Zaynab Bint Jahsh RA. Fun Trivia fact: Aisha RA despite considering Zaynab RA to be a love rival. Always spoke of Zaynab RA in high regard and considered her to be the most pious lady she ever saw. Fun Trivia fact: Zaynab RA was the first of the wives of the Prophet SAW to pass away after him. Fun Trivia fact: Zaynab RA was given the best Walimah out of any of the wives of the Prophet SAW. Her Walimah included a miracle where the Prophet SAW used a small dish to feed a lot of people. Fun Trivia fact: The wives of the Prophet SAW were divided into two camps. One led by Aisha RA and the other led by Umm Salamah RA. Zaynab RA was in the latter camp. Fun Trivia fact: The Nikkah contract of Zaynab RA to the Prophet SAW, is in Surah Ahzab, Ayah 37. Therefore there were no witnesses or Wali needed. Fun Trivia fact: During Umar RA reign, the Wives of the Prophet SAW, received the most amount of money. More than even the first converts. Fun Trivia fact: Abu Ayyub Al Ansari RA waited outside the tent of the Prophet SAW & Safiyya RA, all night out of fear that Safiyya RA may harm the Prophet SAW. ========================================================== Disclaimer for my Notes of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Series: Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, these are my notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah series. Please note: I HIGHLY recommend that you all watch YQ’s Seerah series, as I DON’T cover every single detail the Sheikh mentions. I made these notes primarily for myself but, decided my fellow brothers and sisters may benefit from them too. I no doubt will have made mistakes in my notes. All the good in these notes is from Allah SWT and all the mistakes are from myself. But, I was very meticulous and tried my best to make sure everything is accurate as the Sheikh mentions it. You also will see I have added “Fun Trivia facts” under each of my notes. These FTFs are information YQ said that was off topic or not necessary to include in my notes for the episode. But, they were still worth mentioning hence the inclusion as FTFs. FTFs aren’t always HAPPY pieces of information. Sometimes they are very sad trivia. I just want to say that FTF is the phrase I used for them all collectively when making the notes. One thing I wanted to do but am too lazy to do is, maybe someone could take the FTFs from under each “Episode” and make an Islamic reminder/information IG/TikTok account and post them daily or something. Could be a great form of Sadaqah Jaariyah. Please keep me in your Duas and ask Allah SWT to forgive all our sins during this blessed month and beyond! Ameen

Salam. I didn't find any problem or controversy or shame in this marriage. And I would lean more towards version A myself because it seems more logical. If the prophet SA. knew he was destined to marry Zainab RA. like version B suggests then why would he marry his adopted son to her in the first place?! Also Allah commands Zaid RA. (through the mouth of the prophet SA. In the Quran) to keep his wife when he was ready to divorce Zainab RA. while she is not destined for Zaid RA. to begin with? JAK Sh. Yasir for taking the time to give us all versions and opinions. May Allah bless you and make this series of lectures easy for you to see through. Salam

how about if you were adopted by someone, and your adopted father went to your house and you were not present, and your adopted father saw your wife in less clothes and felt something in his heart and you have to divorce your wife and later your adopted father marries your ex-wife? can we call your adopted father a nice person let alone the the greatest person and an example for all times? please I am a muslim and want to die as a muslim but this is troubling me.

Vegan Pakistani first of all Zaid RA did not HAVE TO divorce his wife,there was no obligation on him , in fact Muhammad SAW suggested against divorce. Zaid RA divorcing zainab RA was entirely his choice . Zainab was not wearing less clothes she just wasn't in a hijab, those days women wore very modest dresses which covered every part of them. She just wasn't wearing hijab. If version A is true it just shows how humane our prophet SAW was . Liking someone's looks does not make anyone bad . I like so many Hollywood actors who are not even muslin does that make me bad? You may also like a person genuinely like say a someone you know or a Bollywood/Hollywood actress , will such a thing .make you look bad. I really did not find this topic controversial.
@humanityisislam
@humanityisislam 5 жыл бұрын
tuba husain Well Zaid shouldn't have divorced his wife at all when Prophet Muhammad was commanding him to not to divorce and fear Allah, but he disobeyed Prophet Muhammad and divorced because he knew the intentions of Prophet of Allah to which Allah is saying that he was hiding, so basically Prophet's command to keep your wife was just a lip service. Not wearing hijab that is what attracted Prophet Muhammad and he couldn't stop himself from appreciating her beauty. Liking your adopted son's wife and later marrying her is humane?? do you even understand the meaning of humane?? If your husband was an adopted son and later divorces you because your father in law liked you when you were not wearing hijab and later marries you, how can all this be considered humane and an example for all of humanity?? You liking Bollywood/Hollywood actress who dance and sing and performs obscene acts publicly is Halal? You are not an example for all of mankind but Prophet Muhammad is, how can some of his actions and teachings fails the ethical and moral tests of our times? "I really did not find this topic controversial." - Fine, you may not find this controversial but many will, why didn't Allah protect Prophet Muhammad from such actions which later will become a headache for Muslims and all their energy will be spent in defending his personality rather than inviting humanity to worship Allah???

Dear Brother Yasir, I was listening your speech on Zaynab RA. As you have mentioned version A and version B on the basis of the interpretation of earlier scholars and later scholars. And I felt both types of scholars kept Prophet SA in the center of the story and made him the ultimate actor of the story and relate him to the Quranic Ayat. But as I was listening you and thinking - I felt why should we not examine the quranic verse keeping Zaynab RA in center? Why not it would be a probability that Zaynab RA, herself fallen in love of Prophet SA and expressed her willingness to marry him at some stages in Macca before her marriage or in Modina after her divorce and being a true slave of Allah called Allah to make it happen. Mohammad SA was hiding this 'desire' or 'willingness' or 'egerness' of Zaynab RA within him as because he himself was not interested to her. As sometimes man does not like to marry someone for many variety of reasons. So, we see prophet SA insisted Zaynab RA to marry his adopted Son Zayed and tried to wrap up the whole things. May be Prophet SW thought in that case Zaynab RA will never think about Prophet SW ever as he became technically the father in law. But Zaynab RA prayed to Allah in a way so that Allah SW pleased to her. And as Allah Himself is the best planner even over our prophet SA - so He Himself exposed it in Quran and ordered Prophet SA to get marry with her by letting the divorce take place between Zaynab RA and Zayed RA though Prophet SA was insisted Zayed RA not to divorce. If you think the theory might has little logic within it - may I request you to conduct a recap research focusing the quranic ayat and hadith keeping this theory in mind.

Mahae Alam you have to believe both in Allah and His messengers to be considered a believer. The statement of faith is there is no God worthy of worthy of worship and Muhammad (s) is His slave and messenger. As for your confusion regarding the prophet's marriages, brother see the prophet (s) doesn't do anything out of his own whims and desires. If you believe in God, then you know that the prophets exactly follow the will of God. And honestly, that should be enough for us to believe in the prophet(s) and his decisions. But if it is difficult to understand even after that, then remember that the age of puberty differs from person to person, and obviously we're talking about a time which was more than 1400 years ago! We cant compare the culture of that time with our time. May Allah open your heart to Islam brother, ameen :)

With due respect sheikh, as far as I know there is a whole fabricator in the chain of narration of version A. Obviously the later books are not going to include a fabricated report. You guys can check out farid's video about Zaynab's (RA) marriage , he clarified it nicely. It's not even in Ibn Ishaq. I don't get why Sheikh Yasir needed to highlight a fabricated story which he himself previously said was pushed by orientalists by ignoring authentic books and they were relying on obscure references.

Hi Brothers, I am confused about one thing and was not able to understand it fully after watching this video. When the Azab Aia was revealed before or after the marriage? Also, was it revealed before Zaid divorcing his wife or after the divorce?
@salehfarman3879
@salehfarman3879 8 жыл бұрын
The verse was revealed during the ministry of the Prophet, before Zaid's divorcing. The verse specificaly an inspired verse, thus, its a prophecy! Nowhere in the Quran that says explicitly that the Prophet married his daughter in law. Verse 37 specifies someone else. Verse 38 refers to who were the women ALLAH imposed on the Prophet and for that verse, we will have to cross reference with 33:50, which shows explicitly who were the women that the Prophet could married! Besides in verse 33:40 again explicitly proves that the Prophet is "not the father of any of your men". He had no blood relation with any of his sahabah, no sons or step sons. Peace

Allaah said, "you feared the people, when Allaah has more of a right to be feared," doesn't this hint that version B was more correct? Why would Allaah say that He has more of a right to be feared unless He was admonishing him (similar to surah abasa). And version A doesn't seem to make sense with that part of the ayah. Because it seems he (saw) feared the criticism of the people, and the moonafiqoon did jump on this opportunity to criticize him, which is exactly what he feared. However, Allaah wanted to demonstrate that it is a permissible marriage. And Allaah "has more of a right to be feared" Can someone explain how that part of the ayah fits with version A?

It is a controversial story of our Prophet, now here is the question, So basically when ZAYNAB and her brother refuse the marriage proposal of ZAYED, Prophet said that she has to marry him and this is what Allah and Rasul want and you have obey it in other word forced them to marry. But at the time when ZAYED wanted to divorce her the Prophet said do not divorce your wife and fear Allah, why he did not said that Allah and Rasul does not want to divorce your wife and you have to obey what Allah and Rasul said. Please answer my question. Will be very grateful if you do so.

If Mughera had truly loved Baghera and treated her well during their marriage, she would not be divorcing him now. Once she has a way out, of course he's running after her, wanting her back and unable to take her rejection of him. But instead of looking at this realistically, we'll just women bash as if it's so funny and then ask the sisters if they have any questions.

How do you know what their relationship was like?

@@EsoTarek I don't; it is a logical conclusion. If a woman is happy with her husband, she will not want to divorce him. She was his slave. Think about it. How kindly did he treat her that she now wants to have nothing to do with him.

@@yasminea7149 you shouldn't jump to conclusions and make assumptions without knowing the facts. For all you know maybe she felt she was suddenly above him now that she wasn't a slave, Allahu alam

@@yasminea7149 Barira and Mughira were both slaves, she was not his slave. As far as I remember from the last time YQ mentioned them, they got married because a slave could only marry a slave so there weren't many good options for Barira. Hence it was her right to push for divorce and Mughira's right to still pursue her to make amends. It doesn't necessarily mean he was mistreating her, it was possibly a situation like Zayd and Zaynab where both were noble believers but simply were not compatible. In fact the Prophet (S) and Umar (RA)'s daughter Hafsa (RA) were inching close to divorce on the Prophet (S)'s end, but that does not make Hafsa (RA) a bad person. As for the levity in YQ's narration, it's something understood by men. There's no insult to Barira (RA), she's still a sahabiyya above us all in piety. YQ also makes similar quips about Umar (RA), especially regarding his eagerness to discipline people, without crossing the line of being disrespectful. There's no ill will here.

I understand that Zaynab RA was a great woman, but isn't Fatima RA much more religious and pious than Zaynab? Because, Fatima RA is going to be the Queen of the women in Jannah!

We need to get out of this comparing status mentality. Sayyidah Fatima is the greatest of women and the most like her noble father, this is true. This does not prevent us from praising others.

+iloveu975 Realize that whenever there's talk about the wives of our Prophet (saw) with the context of jealousy and comparisons and what not, it's always done within the context of Fatima (ra) having already passed away. All the comparisons etc. are about the then living wives of our Prophet (saw). Fatima (ra) is on another caliber.
