Careful with a smoking charger/charge port... Its a short circuit, probably the charger (especially if its a bad knockoff) but could be the car with a loose/broken wire. Be careful - Lithium batteries (phones, cars, laptops, most things you can't replace with an Energizer) are extremely dangerous if they catch fire/explode (which happens easily if they get hot). To put a lithium fire out you need to USE SAND or chemicals - Water is NOT effective and will not work (not quickly because science reasons - SAND on a battery fire is what you want to remember). Some fire departments do have the right chemicals on trucks now.

My dads charger caught fire too. Only it was in an extension cord outside at night, and he used a tent to keep out mosquitos and it all went up in flames and I thank god every day he heard something and didn't listen to me say it was his imagination--it was, in fact, a fire, consuming the tent. The smell of burning plastic is AWFUL. In his case, he thinks he'd been using a slightly frayed charging cord.
