One of the musical masterpieces to come out of the '80s. Yello was years ahead of their time since this sounds like something Fat Boy Slim would make in the late '90s or early '00s.

These guys weren't just light years ahead of the industry when this was made, they will always be lightyears ahead of anything coming. Their productions consist solely of chaining bridges, breaks and in-betweens in such a perfect way, you would never ask for romper stomper marching part in these perfect pieces of art. Timeless art made for eternity.

Electronic Music was all about sampling back in the 50s, decade before first commercial synthesizers hit the market. I'm into Electronic Music for a while, and never heard that Yello did some actual impact on the genre (apart from being great musicians). The only artists who build foundations for electronic dance music were Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder (and Yellow Magic Orchestra to smaller scale). These were the ones whos tracks made in the 70s, later inspired Electro, House and Techno pioneering artists. I know that not just from wikipedia but also from interviews of such guys like Afrika Bambaataa or Juan Atkins (who debuted in the industry around same time as Yello). BTW You know who also were masters of sampling in the 80s? Art Of Noise, Herbie Hancock and Frank fuckin Zappa. Yello wasn't only one.

When I was a kid we had an old VHS with a bunch of Yello music videos.. I used to watch it over and over to get lost in that world... In my 20s now and I can't believe so few people of my generation know about this band who were completely influential on modern music!!

And you can still see this band occasionally. I popped over to Hamburg to see a Yello concert a few Decembers ago. I also actually met Dieter Meier in Camden in north London a few years before then, when he was performing a few jazz numbers at a venue there. Nice guy.

love the story behind this band. A keyboardist singer guy Boris and his recording dude Carlos were all like "we need a singer" and then they were all like "how about a millionaire industrialist gambler?" and that's how THE Dieter Meier got into electronic instrumental music.

In 1999 when I was 16 I wrote a list of my own personal 'Millennium Music Awards'. This was my pick for best use of stereo sound. I remember as a kid listening to it in the car and hearing the engine noises pass from left to right. I had never heard stereo used like that before. I'm 41 now and still fascinated by stereo/surround sound, and this is the track that kicked it all off.

When I was very little me and my dad used to go to Santa Pod raceway and on the journey there he'd be blasting this, Scorpion's Wind of Change and Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning on a cassette. There were other songs on there, but this one and Bed are Burning will always remind me of Santa Pod and watching the supercars there.
