Come with us to Yellow Aster Butte, where we spend our first night under Washington's dazzling stars. We pitched our tent in a field of alpine heather dotted with glittering blue tarns (glacial ponds) still rimmed with snow. Our view? The mighty salt and pepper peaks of Mount Baker and Shuksan.

You're going to love it! We went from Friday to Saturday in mid-August, and we were so pleased with the quietness of the place; it's just stunning! Thank you for watching the video and giving your feedback.

Thank you for watching!! We actually started hiking around 8:30/9 am that day (a Friday) because we knew we were going to spend the night and wanted to get a spot. We went to the tarns, set up camp, and hiked out to the true Yellow Aster Butte summit (most people stopped at the first viewpoint), which I recommend if you are comfortable with steep terrain, drop offs, and some four points of contact hiking. After hiking to the Butte, we came back to our tent and actually moved to a different spot with a better view. 😂 If you weren't spending the night, I'd still recommend an early start to give plenty of time for exploring and for parking. It wasn't too full on Friday, but when we hiked out Saturday morning we were pretty shocked at how many cars were lined up on the road!

Do you mind sharing road conditions? Could you get out there in a low clearance vehicle like a prius?

We took that road 5-6 times last July and August .. end of July was tough with running water from melting snow.. till the beginning of August! Very very rough road! Would not suggest low clearance vehicle! But I did see some cars with low clearance made it to some lower points and people just had another extra mile or so to walk to the trail start.

Hey Trey, sorry I didn't see this earlier. We saw several smaller cars (Subaru-style) in mid-August, but everything was super dry. The road continues on past this trailhead, and I wouldn't recommend driving any further. It was WILD up above!

There are no grizzlies, but we did bring our food in bear canisters to be cautious with any black bears that might come through.
