I just finished reading yellow face so I wanted to come back to this video. I think it's an interesting read, but I was expecting a little more. I expected it to focus more on the publishing industry and the discussion around who gets to talk about a particular story, but I find that it mainly focused on June spiraling down a rabbit hole and making one bad decision after the other. The conversations surrounding the main themes were in context of the internet particularly twitter, but most of us already have an idea of what those discussions are like on the internet. I was hoping for more nuance instead of kind of repeating the same narratives that we are already familiar with. I checked the genre it does mention that the book is satire, so maybe I shouldn't expect it to be very deep perhaps the book didn't intent to be more than a light read. About your comment on the model minority and how people with more uncommon backgrounds are being in the spotlight a little more I do agree, but the thing is people of color were in the shadows for so long that it does feel unfair to get to so bitter about them being celebrated for the first time.

I have seen the book being discussed quite a bit the reviews are very divided some people loved it and others hated it. I am glad you spoke about it I want to check it out even more now. I have wanted to read some of this author’s work before but just like you fantasy isn’t my thing so I didn’t want to read the poppy war series.

While the book focuses upon the publishing world, the insanity of wokeness extends to every institution we encounter. How to navigate today's insecure while being white is so true. This books puts this on full display.

For me, there are two problems with this book: 1. R.F. Kuang comes from a very privileged background, and that's helped her immensely in the publishing world. The publishing world is NOT a meritocracy, even though Yellowface portrays it as such. If you're wealthy and have had an Ivy League education like R.F. Kuang, then you'll have a better chance at being published by a major house. So when you're talking about cultural appropriation and the horrors of the publishing world despite a life of privilege, it's very hypocritical. 2. The main character isn't likable enough to be involving as a reader. I don't mind unlikable protagonists but this character is such a sanctimonious, entitled jerk that I no longer wanted to hear her story. I think the book would've had a lot more bite if the protagonist was forced by the publishing house to pass herself off as Asian-American so the book would sell more.
