Fascinating to hear how the music was molded and developed through the sessions, but, even more so, how the final takes showed greater restraint, which is the essence of the perfection of the finished record and is characteristic of Going for the One as a whole. A great historical document of the birth of one of the best rock albums ever made. Since 1977, I'd envisioned Mountain Studios as a thing of crystalline beauty, but it looks more like a seedy basement in Notting Hill...

You're SO right about how 36 years ago at 16, l pictured a _GRAND,_ and SHINING pipe organ, set in a backdrop of Swiss Alps, inside some filigree windowed STUNNING Cathedral! lsn't that _just_ what pieces like ''Awaken'' are supposed to do though? Going For The One was released 2 days before my 16th birthday in the summer of 1977. I bought the vinyl LP from the New Releases section of a record store. When a high school friend found out I had it, she said "You know Vikki C______. If you let her know you have the new YES album and some weed, you will get very lucky". I took the advice. Vikki and I had a lot of good times and I did get lucky many times. I love that album for many reasons, and that one is a great memory from long ago.

It's amazing to me that such a sublime song as Awaken came from such shambolic jams. Steve Howe plays a lot of utter rubbish, and then manages to pull off the most perfect parts in the final tracks. When I was a kid I thought these guys were just geniuses who just conceived this amazing stuff and played it as if dictated to by the gods. I'm not sure I prefer knowing the "truth" or not.
@theresa422138 жыл бұрын
The only person who got things perfectly, (after the song started being mixed for the master)., is Rick. He is just so incredible, that they called him ''one take Wakeman''.
@docsketchy8 жыл бұрын
Yes, but unfortunately, he could never recreate his magical studio moments on stage. I have heard so many live renditions of songs that were almost destroyed by Wakeman because he either refused to, or simply didn't learn how to, play the proper parts. "The Revealing Science of God" from the Keys to Ascension concert is a case in point. Its as if he always wanted to improvise instead of just playing the parts which were perfected in the studio. When he improvises, his "fiddly-diddly" inclinations really take over.
@johnni377 жыл бұрын
It's funny you say that and I often think the same when watching this. You hear a lot of the scratch track Steve in particular played and knowing the final product you know how none of his studio jams remained. Everything became a place card for the final over dubs. A real interesting aspect of this is from a live performance (so no surprise it's always different), of Yessongs and in particular Yours is no disgrace. The live solo Steve does is maybe one of the best guitar solos of all time. Then watch the Yessongs movie. Completely different performance and perhaps an even better solo. A little more angular and herky jerky but absolutely incredible.
@docsketchy7 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree about the "Yours Is No Disgrace" solo on the album Yessongs, which I also believe to be one of the greatest rock guitar solos of all time. However, I really hate the solo in the Yessongs movie, which is a mess and just doesn't come off at all (in my view). When Steve Howe is inspired he can play some remarkable things, but he probably can't always force it to happen at will. By the way, Happy Birthday tomorrow to Jon Anderson, who is turning 72. (He's 20 years and 4 days older than me).

Dean Mellis I've seen Bill Bruford plenty of times over the years, with Yes, Bruford, Genesis, King Crimson, and one with Tony Levin (can't recall what they were called), and he's was great. They both belonged to the Columbia House record club and every Yes, Tull, Genesis, etc... LP they received for not returning those silly monthly cards on time they gave to me as prog and art rock was not their general taste in music... They even picked out one once in a while for me when the club was running specials. ;) Anyway, it was just released in the summer of '77 - I was fourteen going to be a H.S. sophomore - walking through a music store in the mall and had to have it - right then.

I'd strongly suggest to watch Yes' induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In all the solemnity, Wakeman's speech is from a different place. The guy is just hilarious. By far the funniest speech in RRHF's history. watch?v=X_Qnv0NH4-s --> 7:10
