Nobody can beat Bruford’s sound and genius-level approach to songs and beats, but Phil is right there next to him in terms of a Prog portfolio. Though Phil won’t be widely remembered as a drummer.

Perhaps the best song on the Fragile Album from 1971, definitely the longest one. For its syncopation, lyrical presentation, inter-relativity between each instrument and how they support Jon Anderson's vocals, this one might be my favorite. It is not easy for me to pick just one Yes Song, for that honor, though. Immerse yourself into the entire song, start to finish, as we travel the melody and lyric toward universal embrace. I love The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Fragile, of course; these were my introduction to the group when they were first released. We are all lost in the city, yet found when we feel the frequencies around every corner, from everyone around. From the Heart.

Awaken, definitely but after Close to the Edge. The pinnacle has to be Gates of Delirium but for a muso like Gedo you would have to include Soundchaser no?

As a child first hearing songs like this on vinyl in the 70's was a mystical experience. We were so spoiled by groups like this, Floyd and Zeppelin we almost took for granted that the 5-7 bucks you spent on an LP would always reward you with so much value for your buck. I remember being given a big gift of 40 dollars to buy some records and I bought Zeppelin's entire catalogue.

That was just the hidden track they put at the end...no biggie. It's actually a sample of another track from earlier in the record ("We Have Heaven").
@markdrechsler5660
@markdrechsler5660 3 жыл бұрын
Not a “sample,” exactly. “We Have Heaven” ends suddenly with the sound of a door slamming shut. Here, after the final track of the album, the door unexpectedly swings open, and you hear the conclusion of that earlier song.

@@markdrechsler5660 Believe it or not, just before hitting the 'post' button, I was actually wondering if someone might bring up this little discrepancy... Guess my ESP's currently working fine? 🤷‍♂️ Seriously though... Now I'm almost curious enough to actually flip the phase on one of them, and try the null test.

Great review. You're apparently used to listening to modern produced rock and metal drum sounds. Bill Bruford got his start listening to jazz drummers who favor a smaller, acoustic, natural sound which relies on the skill and talent of the drummer rather than the "big/fatness" of the drum sound to be impactful. Eddie Offord captured that raw, organic sound perfectly. I believe Bill was only playing a 4 piece jazz style kit anyway. you'll see it in any photos from that era. I know we all bring our previous preferences and familiarities to our listening. How else would we have a point of reference? Peace.

Being confused just means you still have things to learn about YES. and catchy isn't the main goal of YES. I don't think Stravinsky', Chopin nor Mozart were focused on being catchy.
