In his video, I discuss the use of strakes, or keels on the bottom of flat bottom boats, where and how they work, where and how they don't. The use of these is a common question from builders.

I added 3 full length 1 x 3/4 oak stringers on my Nola 14...mainly for bottom protection from logs and rocks...and stiffeners

I put two as sacrificial in my hudson skiff ( wich appears in the video). Over the glass, and screw to the frames, then i sealed it with with fatened resin. I do beach a lot down the river and in the lake, and i dont want to damage the plywood. As far as control, it tracks great at low speed at the dock and high speed too.

I'm almost done putting the plywood on my Carolinian Dory, and I think I'll put some strakes on the bottom just for protection.

Always wonder why no instructions about keel installation. The drone video on Kennedy's Galveston Garvey Dory shows a little side tracking on fairly calm water but not bad for a load of three and all their stuff. I will consider that question answered. I am still on frame building, Vacation days are now getting in the way of progress. I hope the cost of lumber ( Plywood ) goes down in the fall.

Can you do an episode on “anti trip chines”? They were a common feature on 50’s and early 60’s runabouts with sharp V fore-foots flattening out to flat dead rises at the stern. Phil Bolger talked about the issue of tripping on his state series flat bottom cruisers like Sneakeasy, Idaho and Wyoming. How they would bank and carve into turns just fine, but at cornering speeds starting around 25mph tripping became an increasing hazard and a safety issue. Boats like the wooden AristoCraft 14 Torpedo series (which are still produced and restored by AristoCraft boats by the way) have anti tripping chines and some of the Glen-L boat plans have anti tripping chines. I have not found any useful information (not in the weeds marine architect explanations) on how why these are configured to work properly and when should they be or not be used. He talked about how you could push both a 26 foot day launch Sneakeasy and a 51 foot Wyoming cruiser to 60mph, with what would be considered modest power requirements, but you probably should not try to turn them at those speeds. He specifically mentioned that the Sneakeasy and Wyoming would not necessarily turn upside down, but rather trip and roll rather violently up on its side and toss the pilot and crew around or overboard. By the way, what’s the difference between a snap turn spin out and a trip? I had a 1980 Fiberform 1610 laser runabout outboard which I found under certain turning conditions would drop the bow, lift the stern and do an instant 180 degree spin out. Didn’t turn over, but anyone riding in the back seats would find themselves in a tangled dog pile on the outboard of the cockpit sole leaning against the gunwales.

I've been digesting these videos like crazy! I am set on a 19ft carolina as i am in S. LA surrounded by the Miss, 2 huge lakes and bayou and marsh everywhere else. I am worried about running over submerged objects. I wonder what would be good for me (without armoring the entire bottom)?

Rest in Peace Jeff. I hope your heirs decide to start selling your boat building plans again. Or perhaps sell the rights and plans to Glen-L or another interested vendor that also offers technical support.

Thanks. Ah the genius of we who read a lot: DAGGERBOARDS!
@OregonOldTimer

I added a daggerboard to my Tillamook dory for maneuvering in crowded marinas at dead slow speed. It holds the boat on track in a crossing breeze and allows tight turns forward and in reverse. I motor-mooch for salmon dead slow, and the daggerboard prevents a crosswind from drifting the boat sideways over the downwind line.
