Steve Howe was named best rock guitarist 5 years in a row. He is self-taught but can play any style, acoustic or electric, and is an absolute master of hybrid picking. You said finger-picking, but he’s holding the pick between his thumb and forefinger and using the other 3 fingers to finger-pick. He wrote this song for his son, who was a young child at the time. I love it because it’s so utterly joyful and playful, yet technically daunting.

Steve Howe plays 19 different string instruments, including the Slide Mandolin. Steve plays different genre of music: Ragtime. Jazz. Blues. Funk. Reggae. Classical. Baroque. Rock. Soul music. Different genres. These guys play their instruments 24/7. Gathering from their interviews, they practice a lot. Great Reaction!!!

When this album came out I was 12 and was learning to play guitar, this ragtime blues guitar tune blew me away. He hybrid picks this song, and before I saw it live, I could not imagine playing an entire involved base line, not just Travis picking, but He plays the entire bass line throughout, while playing insane, ever dynamically changing, melodic expressions. He has Solo Albums. Pyramidology, Distant Seas, Ram, Cactus Boogie, Meadow Rag, Vivaldi Concerto in D 2nd Movement, Beginnings, Surface Tension, Sketches In The Sun.... Many More.

Of all the great prog rock virtuoso guitarists we must include the 3 Steves: Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Steve Morse. They all play a wide variety of genres: rock, jazz, fusion, classical, blues, country, prog,, etc. As a classical guitarist I trust you will enjoy the solo work of these guitarist, especially their live performances, to be found on youtube. With Peace and Love to all!!

Steve wrote this tune (if I recall) to celebrate the birth of his son in ‘69.: so before he joined Yes. This was recorded live as past of a Yes concert at The Lyceum in London in 1970. It dies sound like ragtime, but Howe says it was influenced by Chet Atkinson and by Classical Gas by Mason Williams, which was a hit in ‘68.

Steve used to play "Classical Gas" as his solo spot in his earliest days with Yes, sometimes on its own and sometimes folded into "The Clap".

Thank you for the great reaction to this acoustic masterpiece! Years ago I taught my son the major chords on a kid acoustic guitar. 5 years later he could play this piece. I was so jealous of his talent! I do agree it sounds "rag time " as if it could had been in the soundtrack for The Sting.

Most Rock guitarists cite blues musicians as their main influences. Steve Howe cited two personal very different influences: jazz great Wes Montgomery, and country finger picking legend Chet Atkins, who influenced this finger-picking tour-de-force. Also, side note, the 'e' in 'Howe' is silent, so sounds like 'How'. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from San Francisco

Saw them open for Jethro Tull in 1971 in Oklahoma City. Steve Howe played the Clap and at the end is a run he got from Classical Gas by Mason Williams . Im sitting with Masons son Travis and we were blown away when Steve did his run and instead of returning to the Clap he finished with playing the Classical Gas and we went absolutely crazy 😜

Steve played this on a Martin 00-18 that he used in concert for YEARS. The style is a hybrid of country flat-picking and standard blues. At the time, very few guitarists in the rock field played this way (I can't think of ANY, really). If you're interested, someone on YT made a pretty detailed instructional video on how to play this, but it's certainly not for beginners! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qr1laadhsN-6eaM.html

Steve Travis picks with a plectrum. Using a pick and his fingers. It was developed by the great country guitarist Merle Travis (please do one of his songs) He used a thump pick and 1 finger. Chet Atkins also played in that style Clap is a tribute to both And Clap is the one songs that shuts up most "I can play anything guitarists" Few can play it like Steve.

It's like a pseudo-County style. Tommy Emannuel, Mark Knopfler, and Chet Atkins especially are and were huge names. Steve was a fan of all of those styles and guitarists.
