This is just the beginning of your Yes journey, Ambrose Cynthia - when this music was created, sound engineers knew how to mix music; there was no Autotune to cover discrepencies in vocal ability; fundamentally, this is pure talent - forget many of the modern contemporaries - they aren't even in the same league. Welcome to our world . Thank you for your presentation. Keep safe, Andrew :)

Music like this functions differently from most popular music. One of the reasons it changes and creates surprises so much is that this is what life does. You could be walking down the street, then something will happen that you didn't expect. This will make the rest of your day go in an unexpected direction. This music does the same thing. And if it repeats something, it does it a little differently from the first time - just like real life. How do they make their instruments do what they do? They learn their instruments and learn music. Then they explore their creativity. It's like a painter who explores what color can do, or a film director who explores what cinematography, acting, and scriptwriting can do. This is art. You are experiencing this the way it should - and experiencing it as a personal and intimate revelation. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us; it's a beautiful thing to see.

Called 'Art Rock' or the beginnings of Prog Rock, Yes was at the forefront of a new style of rock which took you on a wonderful journey. A great and timeless song - a true classic! If you want to hear a breakdown of what's going on, listen to Rick Beato, a musician and former college music professor, do Roundabout on his "What Makes this Song Great" series. @ It's a real education as he listens section by section, examining each instrument's key parts, and talking a little bit about the theory and production. Well worth the time. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF

Spot on about Rick Beato! I found his analysis of this song - and others, like of "Dance on a Volcano" to be amazingly-informative. And the guy is SO positive and uplifting!
@Glicksman1
@Glicksman1 2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate Rick's mastery of theory, his musicianship, his pleasant personality, the huge effort he puts into his site, and all. However, I disagree with the premise of "What Makes This Song Great" and have told him of my opinion, FWIW. Music Theory has absolutely nothing to do with what makes a song great. You or I or Rick can analyze songs to death and still not get to the heart of them. No one knows or can know why a song is "great." If you like it, it's good. If you love it, it's great - to you, and that's all that matters. All else is irrelevant.

You must watch Yessongs...the concert video of the tour for Fragile and Close to the Edge in 1973...everything you are hearing they did live and more. As for why you don't know Yes...they fell victim to the long backlash against prog rock when punk came in and survived with us fans for decades...but now it seems that they are having a renaissance with the younger generation finding them on their own and loving it. Yes you definitely need to hear more Yes. And since you've started the first songs on each album, 'Fragile' for this one and the title song on 'Close To the Edge' the other one, you should do them in order as 'concept albums' of this nature are meant to be heard. I suggest do the 2nd song on the Close To the Edge album called "And You and I". @ <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="635">10:35</a> I can answer that! That my dear IS the main characteristic of progressive rock. The unexpected! ✌️😎

This is Yes' high water mark. Nothing else they did before or after equals it, IMO. However, it's a lot to take in in one listening. The incredible virtuosity of each musician in Yes can easily overwhelm all of the other great things about this recording. The seemingly telepathic playing between them is just stunning. The arrangement, singing, playing and the song itself is so superb that it shocks the senses. I've heard it perhaps hundreds of times since it came out on Fragile in 1971 and I'm still completely bowled over by it. Your reaction to Roundabout is no surprise and is similar to everyone I know who has ever heard it.

Yes. The band that would not let an idea last for more then 10 seconds. These guys were about 22 when they made this. FYI there was a battle going on between groups, King Crimson had just blown all their ideas away (Yes drummer Bill Bruford on KC's 1969 Hyde Park show: "Unbelievable. We were scared to death... no-one knew a rock band could play like that!" see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htR7oql537PXZaM.html ) so Yes had to do better! But there were other bands upping the ante... At some point you'll get calls for Gates of Delirium (Relayer side 1). Be warned - the music is beautiful but some messages dark and scary. This tells of a society deciding to go to war and Yes really holds you in to feel what war is like - war is ugly, cruel and full of regrets. Side 2 of Relayer is perhaps the safest - Sound Chaser is really good. Good reaction! :) PS Bill Bruford then went to play with KC: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZdnZ9yA0JO8g5c.html

A fantastic classic Yes song with their distinctive uplifting positive Yes sound. The whole Fragile LP is a masterpiece and can be recommend. However, you should try Starship Trooper but look for the version on Yessongs 1973, this is a 3 LP live set. That is the best version, fantastic and you can feel how Yes worked with the audience to go up a level. All the songs on Yessongs are great and show how they professionally played those complex songs live and elevated them for the fans. The fans all knew all the songs but came to concert for a new experience and Yes delivered. So for me I like the studio versions (clean and sharp) and the live versions (energetic, adapted for the audience, with audience noise). Thank-you for a great video and great reaction. Yes is a band that explored new places during its classic era in the early to mid 70's always taking you to new wonderful places with their soundscapes. So wonderful to see this music reaching a new generation. Keep exploring.

The group members were veterans of various 1960s British pop groups, none of them particularly successful, so when they came together they brought everything to bear on the music. Steve Howe later explained how other groups would just play their songs, but Yes approached it from a composer's point of view. If you have a lot of ideas, why not just use them all! The key addition on this album was classically-trained pianist (and a pioneer in the use of synthesizers) Rick Wakeman, who also went on to success as a solo artist.

I saw them perform this in an all-day event at QPR Football Ground, Shepherds Bush, West London in 1975 :)

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Yes is a good group to dive into Progressive or Prog Rock. Think Jazz and Rock fusion with time fusions and amazing musicianship. I see you liked A Cappella so I would suggest you check out Home Free, they are a country/faith/pop A Cappella group, try 'Man of Constant Sorrow', 'Ring of Fire', 'Helplessly Hoping' and many others. If you liked Yes, check out 'And You and I' by Yes or 'Carry on Wayward Son' by Kansas for some amazing Rock Classic music try the band Boston (Their entire first album song by song) 'More than a Feeling' 'Peace of Mind' and 'Foreplay/Longtime' are good starters. For heavier music try Iron Maiden 'Hallowed be they Name' or a live song like 'Fear of the Dark' at Rock in Rio. Thanks for sharing. Chris

I had the great pleasure in 1976 of seeing Yes, Peter Frampton, and Garry Wright all in one concert. Wonderful day. Check out each of those other names for great music too.

Yes.... Close your eyes, it's the best way ... They give us so much to listen to. I was about as young as you when it came out.... It was our new orchestral music....
