Hyundai builds vastly superior cars now than they did just five years ago, but even some of the company's more expensive models can feel a touch on the cheap side. The new Tucson is different, though. It's crammed full of technology and it's been completely redesigned on the inside for a more premium feel. It looks good, too.
There's only one problem: the competition. The Tucson's big rivals are the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar, two incredibly popular SUVs. But it's more premium appearance - and inflated price tag - now means it's a rival for the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan, too.
Has Hyundai done enough to justify the higher price tag?

Excellent review, one of the first I've seen in the UK, well done. You mention the Qashqai but I think Toyota RAV 4 may need to worry too. I love the RAV but Hyundai has really shown Toyota how to do the infotainment screens.

Correction: the Tucson Hybrid has a 6-speed auto box, not a 7-speed DSG. Most of the mild hybrid range, however, does come with a 7-speed DSG - Cam

I have an issue with this blind spot monitor. I see most reviews with Tucson’s that have it bit it seems to be part of the Tech Pack, which is an approx £1500.00 option, even on the Ultimate. I've not ordered it for our Ultimate Hybrid it's a step too far price wise, but they'd have been better following Nissans lead with the Tekna and having an Ultimate Plus. Worse is that the website is (was up to last week at least) incorrect and says no options available, if you configure an Ultimate Hybrid 230.

Actually when you said the creases looked “muscley” then it made sense, like a mustang quarter horse with its lean haunches ... I’m understanding the lines even more when seeing the form in anatomical terms.

Agree, the lighter interior option looks better but given it’s a “family SUV”, do you think it would be harder to re-sell one with a light interior as opposed to dark?
@davel9359
@davel9359 2 жыл бұрын
Fair point. I much prefer lighter interiors and our current Tucson is very dark inside, but we've decided on a new Ultimate Hybrid and my wife prefers the black , especially as we ferry our grandchildren around. The plus is the pan roof, so having the shade open brightens things up.

Great review and one of the first I've seen, I test drove the same engine in the premium spec a few weeks ago, I think they have nailed it, it felt just as good quality wise as my 2016 c class, I'm very tempted by the new tuscon, but would personally wait for the n line and the prices to be a bit more competitive,

Just placed an order for the ultimate trim in full hybrid. My biggest gripe with the process is that the UK hyundai dealers don't give the blind spot cameras as standard and it comes with an extra tech pack upgrade. It is a completely different driving experience from my previous 2018 tucson Go SE, way more throttle and brake response. The interior feels soft almost everywhere you tough instead of the old scratchy plastics. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery. Bear in mind adding the tech pack means a 12-16 week wait atm!

A very nice car to look at and a vast improvement over the previous model BUT for crying out loud why did they put a virtual cockpit and then deprived it of any "vitual" functionality? Except for the change in theme when you swap driving profiles there is very little that this dashboard does to differentiate it from a standard analogue one!! The instruments left and right do not change to display menus or other useful information. All that is handled by the center piece of the screen which is also lackluster as it displays only basic information just like any other small screen fitted between analogue instruments. There is no option to display the navigation map or similar functionality which is standard in most any other virtual cockpit on the market. So you have a virtual cockpit that mostly behaves like an analogie one and this is a great missed opportunity for Hyundai as it would literally cost them nothing to fully utilize the screen they already replaced the analogue instrument cluster with. A clear lack of imagination there that smears the otherwise very nece job they have done with the center screen. Shame...

Thoroughly confusing review - snide comments, sarcastic, forced long glances after barely veiled 'barbed' comments - it's a game changer in one breath and in another, the interior could be vastly improved. Like most car review channels, more time is put into the script and the presenter's profile than any meaningful or informative information. Basically, everyone is trying (and failing) to be Mat Watson.

I hate it when cars convert to touch sensors instead of physical knobs and buttons. It is counter intuitive and dangerous when operating while driving. Physical buttons have tactile feel which no touch sensor can mimic. You can easily operate it while having your eyes on the road most, if not all the time.

If you buy a Hyundai (especially the Tucson and Santa Fe) be prepared to spend minimum of $175-$500 every month on BS problems you will never experience in a quality car like an Honda. Every other month you will have to replace 1-4 0f 6 to 8 catalytic converters that go out for no reason like clock work one after the other. Your gas line will need replacing, then your gas tank that rotted from the inside for no apparent reason. Your check engine light will be on more than it is off. You'll also notice when you hit a bump your car will wobble when the front wheels leave the ground, your passengers will also notice this and ask you if the car is "safe to drive that way"?. When you finally replace head gasket, then the entire engine and decide you've had enough, and sell it for next to nothing, you'll buy yourself an Acura and realize that it never needs maintenance, that it isn't normal to be without your car every other month because it's in the shop again, and you'll swear like I did to NEVER buy another Hyundai again!!!
