Learn Japanese From Zero!

8 жыл бұрын

[Course 1 Lesson B]
Japanese counting after 99 is also PRETTY easy. You just have to learn 2 new words and a few exception rules and you can easily now count from 1-9999 in Japanese.
The 2 new words we need for this video are:
100 - hyaku (byaku, ppyaku)
1000 - sen (zen)
Remember to go to the website and do the quizzes, games, and actual lesson on Japanese numbers.
This video is part of the courses on:
fromzero.com based on the Japanese From Zero! (learnfz.com/JFZamazon) book series written by George Trombley and Yukari Takenaka

@@sumanboi in japanese, there is a system of adding a suffix to a number, it provides context on as to what kind of item it is, such as [number]-kin, is for breakloaf, -dai is for machinery, -nin is for amount of people, -mai is for sheets of paper, -tsu is for general objects (making it the vaguest that can be used anywhere) There are discrepancies with pronouncing some numbers, which makes the counters more difficult to learn I like the system though, providing context is great

Not sure if someone has said this, but a good way to practice is to go to an online random number generator, you can type in your limits (I'm sticking to to 1- 9999 for now!) and just try and call out the numbers it gives you. I can never learn stuff from just reading it, so this was quite helpful. (Love these vid's George!)

To his disbelief, the US did go crazy, not because of Trump but because of the massive lies and senseless bs the one who oppossed him to the point of sabotaging their own country to try and get their own way.... lol Edit: I don't even care about US politics at all, it doesn't concern me at all, i'm busy with the situation in my own country. Everything i know is because i researched since all the sjw/pc/modern feminism bs was "imported" here from the US and i can tell wtf is going to happen in my country by just looking at what culturally changes happened a few months ago in the US.

For those who are interested, basically in the electoral college you need 270 votes to win. There's a total of 538 possible votes. 538 comes from the total number of senators and representatives in congress. Every state has at least 3 electors (2 senators and at least 1 rep). You actually vote for the electors who then vote for the president. They generally will vote for the person they were pledged to but are allowed to change theirs votes except in 26 states +DC where electors are bound. The electoral college was created as a safety net to prevent the common people from picking a bad president. The 270 comment kind of woke up the AP Government kid in me.

百 was bek in middle Chinese. It is a regular sound shift in Japanese to shift the initial b to h. The original B pops out here and there. 日本 Nihon vs. Nippon. This occurs most often when the word is preceeded by an "entering tone" 入聲, the characters ending in p t or k in Chinese. Usually entering tones are either split into 2 syllables in Japanese (k became ku, like 六 liuk, ryoku, t became chi, 八 bat hachi, p became u, 十 zip > juu , or dropped. In 六百 ryuk bek , the k got assimilated by the initial b and got preserved.

Ray Cui Woah... information bomb. I honestly can't process this much at once. But did you know that in Korean "bek" is still 100.
@melopc
@melopc 7 жыл бұрын
Learn Japanese From Zero! yes, Korean preserves certain middle Chinese phonology better than Japanese and Mandarin. p and k are essentially identical while the final t changes to -l. For example 一 is it in MC. il in Korean and ichi in Jap, 七 is tsit in MC. chil in Kr, sichi in Jp. Initials and vowel shifts are more irregular, but can still be classified based on a Chinese rhyme book.
@japanesefromzero
@japanesefromzero 7 жыл бұрын
Ray Cui - You should write a book. I wouldn't buy it but there are certainly some people who love this style of information. You could call it "The phonology of the impending evolutionary and social shifts in the vocal voicings of Chinese characters throughout Asian descendant nations." The subtitle would be "An exhaustive look into origins and final resting place of the Chinese hieroglyphical System of related iconic data through speech." :P

Thank you very much! I love your videos ,really Even though I can count the numbers, I still feel something strange. like when I say a number eg (二百四) , loudly , I can't recall in my brain the number 204 my brain only receives this ( ni hyaku yon ) How I can get used to it? also, when I hear it from someone else, like on KZfaq or Tv it gets harder for my ears to pick up the number or even recall its numerical equivalent.

I love this series George. Numbers are way more fun to say in Japanese. I love their logic with counting numbers. I remember when I first started Japanese, I already knew how to say from 1-1000. Can't stand the way we count numbers in English, By the way, 720 Pokemon is the current amount of Pokemon, but with the new Pokemon Sun and Moon game coming out, there will be more than 720 Pokemon. At the moment it's 720 but there's going to be more Pokemon. Funny that you mentioned 999 with England's Emergency Number, they mentioned it recently in a Pokemon Go incident with some people in England who got lost in some cave.

Melbester9. I agree with you that counting numbers in Japanese is more fun than it is in English and counting in Japanese is close or about the same as it is in Spanish. English is my first language and Spanish is my second language and I can speak both fluently (exception here and there in saying certain things/words/sentence structures at times in Spanish but you get the jist of it.).

I don't think shichi and shi are as commonly used as nana and yon, therefore it shouldn't be considered to use it when speaking, but it should be learnt for the sake of understanding should someone else say it.

George, love your vids, man. Just a suggestion as a teacher...it was hard for me to figure out how to say the number while you were talking about Eevee, countries and Trump. The topics were fun, but very distracting. I actually had to pause the video in order for me to get some thinking time. Thanks man, your vids are great anyway.

Thank you for these videos, I don't even use your web nor books, I've already purchased Genki 1&2 but man they are helpful. Maybe it's slightly in a different order but it's the same in the end and having a second perspective and someone who explains it is much easier. (Self learning at home)

Having multiple sources / opinions really helps I think. I also think learning at home is fine. It is better than not learning!
