‘ Light Flight’ by Pentangle. What a great piece of music. Some stellar talent in that band!

It's hard to imagine that Space Oddity and Sugar Sugar were on the charts at the same time, they seem decades apart.

Love that Kinks song so much. That entire Arthur album is excellent, and it's one of the greatest 60's records in my opinion- along with Village Green of course.

Early Jethro Tull was just majestic, bluesy but when they had orchestration it gave you the chills. Something like sweet dream, to cry you a song, teacher, are among the greatest songs of the late 60s and early 70s

“ Thank God for the Nice and Family.” Amen, brother! Ian was my flute playing hero. I was in school orchestras from elementary school through high school. My instrument, the flute. Let’s just say I never saw the full potential of that instrument. Then one day I heard Jethro Tull and I got it.

During that time I played the Arthur album far more than Abbey Road or Led Zeppelin. “Some Mother’s Son” from Arthur should have been released as a single. One of the greatest anti-war anthems ever recorded. Thank you again for this upload!

Wow, Ian Anderson sure had his blind spots, dismissing the stunning and superb P.P. Arnold at the drop of a hat. He was pretty shirty about Reggae too. If I were there I would have said, "Ian, you bloody blinkered sod!"

How great is it to see Ian praising Family back then, one of the most criminally overlooked bands of the era! They were sort of working in the same ballpark as Tull themselves, after all.

Interesting that the Pentagle was doing songs in 5/4 time and only about two years later Jethro Tull attempted that with the classic song, “living in the past.”

I'm not one for covers most of the time, but I have always loved The Fall's version of 'Victoria'. And the video is enjoyable as well.

That was a great week, especially for albums. Jethro Tull has always been one of my favorite bands. I never saw them play live, but I saw Martin Barre play many of the Tull hits with a younger band a few years back. It was very good. 🎸🎶❤

Looking at the Top 20 albums, hot damn that was a great week in music. Crazy that 2001 soundtrack out ranked Led Zeppelin. What a weird time!

Ian was really plugged into the scene, back then! In 1969 with STAND UP high in the charts IAN was getting several interviews!

In the lists at the end there's some fantastic music there and from all genres.

Oh yes, "Victoria!" A stunning song! The Pentangle sounds pretty good too. Ian Anderson has something to criticize but in a humorous way. He is honest and I think he is usually right, except for PP Arnold. A couple of bands I have to check out because I didn't know them. Thanks again!

tull was the first prog band that i got into love looking at the charts from 69....musical tastes were all over the place

Props for this, because it turned me on to "Light Flight." Pretty much with him on everything else, but PP Arnold, but everyone has their own tastes. I've always like great music that sounds "alive" like the Kinks' best... and Tull's best.

Great comments, though being fair, I'd have called them the same way. I love how Ian's generally got something nice to say, even if he's not keen on the song - except for the tracks that seem to deserve some savaging. He also notes that he, like Family, are still learning. A bit of humility in the man whose talent and stage presence would set the tone for hundreds of groups.

Maybe from the PP Arnold comment Ian isn't into Gospel music, me neither, but jeez she has an expressive woman's voice.

Nice to hear that he thought the guitarist in "Igginbottom's Wrench" knew what he was doing. That was none other than Allan Holdsworth who is regarded as a god by even the most revered and accomplished jazz/fusion guitarists.

What a great time for popular music! So experimental and varied. Is the ending song a cover of "Changes", by The Zombies?

There's some good takes here. I definitely agree with his take on "Light Flight". Anyone who can put together two alternating time signatures in a song without it sounding forced definitely has skill.

I've watched a few dozen of these reviews and this is one of the few where the artist was somewhat positive. 😀

Ian Anderson tell truth. He likes real artists that still are remembered and dislikes the oddities and the nonsense that now are forgotten.

Me and Ian were born in the same August 10th, I do really enjoy most of his work on Jethro Tull, but... Quite unfair this statement he made on P. P. Arnold! I also disagree on his point of view on the reggae song... The sense of cleaning coming from European ears aren't the same with the cheap, but brave, production of a Jamaican song, I presume. And a pioneering song for the genre. Anyway, that was Ian's mind in 1969, and I can understand.

Watching these posts, it's astonishing how many songs and groups are in the all-but-forgotten file.

Interestingly, I could always hear some Family influence on Jethro Tull’s early work, especially their “Stand Up” album and in turn, Family were somewhat influenced by Tull, on tracks like, “Drowning in Wine”.

Great to see Ian understanding time signatures: I saw almost all these bands at the old Marquee, including Tull with Bethnal Green’s Mick Abrahams. I got to Aynsley Dunbar’s great band with the fabulous John Mooreshead on guitar. Unkind about Keef Hartley: I think Miller Anderson is on vocals. I saw John Morgan and Tull on the same bill! Family and Kinks both excellent.

Anderson's comments are mostly fair and sometimes quite funny. His enthusiasm for The Kink's Victoria is great! But he was most unfair to P.P. Arnold, of whom I'm a big fan. And his comments about her were really strange, too. She doesn't "sing like a woman"? Over on *this* side of the pond, that's *exactly* how you sing like a woman!

I think he's right about thanking God for the Nice and Family. I believe "Stand Up" was Tull's 1969 album and that was no slouch either. My favorite. I considered the band's records after that a downward turn.

As much as I loved Ian's views on The Kinks and Pentangle, I was gutted by his opinion of P.P. Arnold. Her voice is achingly beautiful. If he doesn't think Arnold sings like a "woman", he must absolutely loathe Tina Turner. I haven't been this "Blind Date" stunned since Scott Walker's utter disdain for Otis Redding.

Isn't the guitarist in Igginbottom Allan Holdsworth, who indeed was very clever, and for many the GOAT of fusion guitarists. Wedding Bell Blues hit No.1 in the USA in November, and was one of 3 Laura Nyro songs in the top ten that month at 1, 2 and 10.

And there was I thinking I was the only lover of a Nice Family. RIP Keith Rock on Chappo.

Random thought. The Fall's version of 'Victoria' sounds just like The Kink's original and should therefore be considered surplus to requirements. But it's just as great. For some reason. Also, picking on The Scaffold is a bit like being mean to puppies.

I knew that Ian didn't have much of an affinity for Black American music, he said so himself when explaining that Tull's style changed after This Was (including Mick Abrahams' departure) because he felt odd being an British guy trying to copy a Black American style, i.e. blues. It's also pretty apparent in his vocals in the early recordings of the John Evan Band available on KZfaq--he didn't have a feel for the style at all. His comments sounded reasonable to me at the time, but then I hear his comment on P.P. Arnold and the stuff about "singing like a woman" and he sounds like a real fogey.

In the official chart, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again replaced Je T’Aime … Moi Non Plus at number 1. Each topped the charts for just one week.

I was around then, and of course I remember all the songs on the lists at the end. But I don't remember hearing a single one of the songs he reviews, with the possible exception of the Kinks song. I do remember Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson of course.

That Ottilie Patterson one is my favourite song here and best on that record. What an oddity. Doesn't seem like he listened to it for long if he couldn't tell if it was a man or woman.

I wish they would play bands like John Mayall, and Aynsley Dunbar on the top 30 stations here in the states. I had to listen to alternative fm stations to hear these progressive blues bands.

One of the best of this series IMHO -- lots of laughs, and it was interesting that I liked and disliked the exact same ones as Ian. Anyway, glad to have listened to this one as I've been turned on to a couple of items that I'll research a bit more: Pentangle and The Family. Interesting stuff for sure.

Igginbottom are deadringers for Spinal Tap. Had to look real close at that cover to make sure that wasn't Nigel Tufnel middle-right.

Ian sounds parochial, trying to defend who he identifies as his peers, like the Family and the Pentangle - on the contrary of what he said, PP Arnold has a great voice and he's comments on the reggae tune sound idiotic. I like a lot of the Tull music but do not think I would share a pint with this guy :)

I’ve always loved Family right from the first time I ever heard them, but so many people I play their albums for can’t stand Roger Chapmans vocals. I guess you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em; I’m glad Ian agrees with me anyway!
