In this YETI Presents video, join a team of determined anglers in Russia's Far East. Teeming with wild Steelhead trout, the remote Kamchatka Peninsula is under protection of Russia's strict native fish conservation regulations. The Kamchatka Steelhead Project is both an effort to enjoy the challenge of fly fishing for these bullish fish as well as conserving and studying them.

Have to disagree with the comment that "they spend very little time in the river" some steelhead spend just as much time in the rivers as the ocean because they have to over winter. Its probably the main reason most north american steelhead runs are gone because so many different strains of fish spend so much time in rivers and get plucked out over the year.

Any way of transplanting the same strain of the Kamchatka Steelhead in Washington State Rivers, like the Skagit River or the Coast of Washington?

Where I come from we have no dams and we have the largest 100% wild steelhead run in the world with the biggest steelhead ever landed on the fly coming from one of our main stems upper tribs

Have to agree with danzio56, doesn't that guy work for the Fly Shop in California and sell a lot of these Kamchatka trips? He's making money off this. So the rest of you high horse guys can get down.

I was really enjoying this video until the 6 minute mark. What an elitist statement. "I would rather sit home and watch paint dry, than catch a hatchery fish." What makes this statement even more offensive is that this guy is supposed to be a champion for the sport and for the species. What if every fly fisherman had this attitude? The sport would quickly collapse and future generations would never know the wonder and joy of our sport. Whether wild or planted, catching a fish on a fly is an exhilarating experience and not to be dismissed so casually! Such an arrogant fellow. What I would give for the opportunity.

Agreed man. If everyone had a native stream in their backyard, I could understand thinking the way he appears to, but unfortunately not everyone has the privilege of living near a healthy population of massive wild fish.

it's an opinion. who wouldn't rather catch native fish? to say someone is arrogant and elitist because they have the opportunity to do something incredible is asinine. i'm sure if you or i had the same opportunities, our thinking would be very similar.
@danielsimpson2814

what gives them the right to catch fish in name of science and no one else? same thing happened in the dark ages when only the king And his chosen could hunt deer, catch salmon and so on.these guys are elitist , you heard him say I'll go anywhere to catch natives !!!!! this is what's killing the fishing in the Pacific northwest. We had lots of fish and was renowned for steelhead and salmon and most were hatchery. now fish numbers are way low, some rivers are even closing . you can't save the wild fish by making rules on the river alone , you have to stop cannery ships off the coast as well. I've caught wild fish that were not hard fighting and I've caught hatchery fish that fought hard. arrogance is what I see here , a select special group gets to fish where no one else can. don't you think many locals would love the opportunity to catch this beautiful fish? oh that's right there not scientists or biologist who fly fish ......... arrogance , elitist , special privalige.

Daniel Simpson What gives biologists the right to fish these locations is the knowledge they have. If it were open to the public there would be a list of problems. People would harvest the fish and leave nonnative organisms and trash behind. Consequently making the ecosystem unbalanced, and pressured. Similar to what we have throughout the states today. Biologists know how to leave minimum impact. As well as how to “work up fish” in order to get genetic differences, estimated population sizes, their migration pattern, etc. This information is vital to understand and recreate the runs of steelhead we have around our urban areas.
