Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Honest(ish) Russian Warlord | NYT Opinion

The Opinion Video above is about Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian warlord who led a short-lived rebellion in Russia last week. The mutiny stunned the world, but it was a rebellion foretold. For months, Mr. Prigozhin, who commanded a totally ruthless mercenary force and is himself a product of the Russian kleptocracy, had been an unrestrained critic of the Russian military command, unleashing raw and candid critiques via his Telegram account. For reasons that are still not entirely clear, Russia’s leader, President Vladimir Putin, had allowed Mr. Prigozhin to hammer away at the Kremlin, which is particularly astonishing given how many of the government’s critics have wound up either imprisoned or dead.
Here’s a selection of Mr. Prigozhin’s sharpest criticisms of Russia’s military leadership and the nation’s faltering war in Ukraine. The mercenary chief is a thug, and the brutal militia under his command has been accused of committing numerous atrocities. But that does not detract from the fact that he was the primary source of real information about the war for many Russians, and that much of what he said was true. Seeing him say it is remarkably powerful.

@@johanselander7708you're probably right but it's more a matter of warped priorities rather than "double standards" which is often a charge meant to cripple even the good in the imperfect, usually in the mouth of the perfectly evil. Please translate... Its very important.

Please translate... Its very important.

@@corsojames Yes! he is a pawn on a chess board and whatever ugly thing he did was because of those rats in Kremlin. He exposed that the Russian invasion in Ukraine is based on lies. Also few days before when his people killed an American soldier he showed respect by handing over his body wrapped with the American flag. I believe if Prigozhin works for a righteous leader then he would be an asset for any nation. He knew that his fate is sealed but he wanted a violent protest as he was repeatedly ignored. I liked his childlike smile while leaving the scene. So happy and content when he was greeted by the ordinary public. It also indicated that the Russian people will favour anyone over Putin.

@@corsojames It’s hard to respect the guy who was a criminal (served time for violent crimes in maximum security prison) even before becoming Putin’s henchman. He executes his own soldiers with a sledgehammer (according to Bill Browder and apparently Prigozhin posted the video of execution on KZfaq). Prigohzin, Putin and their men are worse than Taliban, keep that in mind at all times. I was born and raised in USSR, I am familiar with the mentalities of that kind. NYT is full of sh-t. They obsessively criticize america and other states that accept some migrants if they make any attempt to regulate it by cracking down on irregular routes. Then the NYT say squat to equally criticise Israel on migration that takes no migrants whatsoever. Also virtual dead silence on how HRW and Amnesty International accuse the Israel state of apartheid. The NYT ownership, CEO, and editor-in-chief appear to support extreme Jewish nationalism. They are playing liberals for fools by framing their nationalist sophistry as "human rights"... a-la-carte. NYT is pro ethno-nationalism for Israel. Pluralist states for everyone else. And if anyone points out their bs posing as moral principle they are smeared as "antisemetic".

Does he mourn the loss of the brave Ukrainians and their loved ones who have lost their lives? No, he is responsible for the brutal slaying of these people who don’t want this conflict but are fighting to save the very existence of their country, and, let’s not hide the fact that they are totally aware of their need to crush Putins escalations in his goal to achieve world domination. Guess you missed the reports of Putin boarding his plane to flee Russia as Wagner closed in on Moscow. The truth is we have no f***ing clue what is happening in Russia. Putin is clearly holding control by a thin thread. His popularity from propaganda is what stopped the coup. If he fled Russia the people would not support a wagner warlord as interim president until rigged elections could take place. Putin is the glue that holds Russia together and the real fear is what happens when he dies. We are the irrational ones in this conflict. When Russia was about to take kyiv with all those tanks we negotiated a peace deal and russia held up its end of the agreement and pulled back. The contract is on KZfaq. We of course lied and broke everything we agreed to.

How is the end near for him? You all seem to think Putin can just snap his fingers and poof people out of existence. Prigozhin is not some bureaucrat you can throw out of a window lol, he sits at the heart of a massive armed force with more combat-experience than the base Russian army; it will take nothing less than a siege to take him.

But the end is not near for Ukraine, yet the West wants the bloodbath to continue !! Ukraine needs to ignore the Western agenda for regime change in russia and energy control and arrange a peace deal to save lives. It's all very easy for the pro war democrats and neocons but it's not their children that are being sent to their deaths. If you are pro Ukranian then you should be encouraging peace. As for Ukraine's realistic chances of winning even Zaluzhny admitted to the Washington Post apart from the lack of air support they are outnumbered by Russian artillery 10-1 !!!! and even with F16's Ukraine wouldn't have air superiority The obvious threat is nuclear war which the Biden admin seems to care very little about, it's a lose lose for Ukraine and the West, face facts

It does seem naive to view the situation as black and white. We aren't good and they are bad. It's more complicated than that. When leaders portray it as such, they are not to be trusted. View it critically, and look for motivations. Russia is making a big play. They must have a reason beyond what is stated.

It is abundantly clear that he harbours a deep-seated animosity towards the Ukrainian people, as evidenced by the abhorrent manner in which Russia is manipulating the situation in Ukraine. Russia is manipulating implying that Yevgeny Prigozhin plays a role in this manipulation.
