If they built this in the early 1990s, imagine what they are capable of now.

Jup and the program probably started earlier somewhere in early 1980. Because i found this about the F-22: "The F-22 program was initiated in the early 1980s with the aim of developing a highly capable successor to the F-15 that would be capable of defeating all known and projected enemy fighters, including those being developed at the time by the Soviet Union. The F-22 program was given Milestone I approval in October 1986."

I'd love for the Airforce to restore it back to flight and do airshows across the country. And the same for the F-16XL...

The YF-23 was literally NGAD. And before they needed it. Now, don't get me wrong, the F-22 is AMAZING - but even that was too much for a budget.. At this point only things which can be afforded should be used - or things should be DONE ANYWAY! But, alas no. Our superiority is achieved by inferior technology - money is used as a blame for laziness. Modernise the F-22's, make them better - it is THE PERFECT platform. F-15's and 16's are cool, but there are no REAL FIGHTERS left after the F-22 (which was just abandoned!!). The F-35 is NOT A FIGHTER! It is a ''multi-role'' teeny tiny little thing with all capabilities in one, rather than something truly WORTH THE MONEY and being a TRUE FIGHTER. Otherwise, you've lost all resources in one aircraft. Losing a fighter in a real situation is replaceable - just send another up and you've got the Sentry's, Hawkeye's, Refuelers etc. already up there STILL FLYING STRONG. One teeny little jet? EVERYTHING LOST. Modern aircraft are just like little mosquitoes and flies you swat away, PREY - the F-22 and it's predecessors were the Hornets, the Red Kites, the Eagles - HUNTERS, PREDATORS. Nowadays, you don't even see the man you've just KILLED. Before, you had to earn it. It's just not the same. Please, change something. Anyone. Make fighters fighters again.

You don't need a fighter if you can track the target from 100 km away and have an integrated network across UAV to F-35 systems to fire from over that length. This was from a time where maneuverability was important because we didn't have the range we do today. Maybe with stealth technology you could say it's moved closer again but not to the extent of needing to get into a dog fight.. Warfare has changed to an extreme level to where your biggest threats are either G-A AA or another craft 100km away. Think of the F-35 as a smaller, stealth, network modernized F-14. F-14 was not meant to get into AA battles up close. If you want something for countries without those capabilities you should be happy about the modernized upgrades the F-15 are getting. If you want something new to fend the capabilities of a modern threat it isn't going to be cheap..
@diqital_aviator3 ай бұрын
@@alekswatsonOh I'm happy for the F-15, but it's not made for dogfighting, not in this era at least. Essentially what you have done is proven my point further. Yes, nowadays, you engage with the target before you even see them. (100's of miles away). The F-14 was very large. It was a fighter, it sought to engage and destroy. It was meant to go FAST, not dogfight. Maneuverability is still one of the key aspects. And everything the forces are looking for is already present in things they already had, but they ditched it - because it's 'Too expensive'. They' rather something that somewhat functions for a purpose they haven't even come across yet, that something fit for it. If that's the case, they should have nothing at all.
@alekswatson3 ай бұрын
@@diqital_aviator You're not understanding.. The F-14 was yes meant to go fast but was one of the first fighters that engaged in BVR with the AIM 54.. Maneuverability can still be achieved with f22 in this era but to say we don't need next gen networking/comprehensive A-G capabilities/and advanced mission control in a next gen stealth package because we haven't come across conflict yet is naive.
@alekswatson3 ай бұрын
@@diqital_aviator And again if we aregoing up against something without the need for next gen capabilities for dog fighting then the F-15/16/18 packages are enough. But to say because we haven't faced it yet means we don't need it is destroying your own argument in that the only mission the f22 has actually accomplished has been shooting down a balloon, and otherwise hasn't been used since its introduction 20 years ago.. Does that mean we don't need it? No.
@diqital_aviator3 ай бұрын
@@alekswatsonThat's what pains me, they don't want the F-22. It is the perfect platform. But money is their obstacle, apparently. I didn't say we don't need the capabilities, I'm saying it's a huge disappointment to me that the amazing technology we had has been replaced with something, arguably, worse for the purpose it's meant for - because that's all they CAN have. But what they WANT, they discarded. It's illogical. The conflict they are preparing for hasn't happened yet is what I am saying - not that it's not necessary, because that IS the future conflict style, yes, but I think they should sit and have a think about what they already have before making something which is less than what they already have. If budget is the problem, then they should use what they have - that lineup includes: F-22, F-15, F16, F-14 etc. Now I don't mean those specific planes, but combine those capabilities and what do you have? Pretty much NGAD. And they fail to realise that technology as a whole already exists IN THEIR HANDS.
