/ mintvolcano - Yi Yi: A One and A Two, written and directed by the legendary Taiwanese director, Edward Yang (楊德昌Yang Dechang) is a masterpiece of filmmaking in every respect. Part of the "Taiwanese New Wave" the unique one take shots (oners) jump out at first but the story and acting are not to be overlooked either, the attention to detail that filmmaker Edward Yang puts into every single frame, every performance, and every sound is truly astonishing. Yi Yi is maybe one of the most underrated films ever made, despite winning Yang the best director award at the Cannes film festival in the year 2000 this film is still largely unknown by many and is often left out of the conversation for greatest film of all time. We believe it should be considered one of the greatest achievements of cinema coming from any county… at least that’s what we think, but we are biased because we are from Taiwan.
The video features clips from the film Yi Yi: A One and A Two (2000) - directed by Edward Yang (Kuzui Enterprises) for educational and demonstrative and educational purposes (fair use).
Music: Bach Toccata in E minor, BWV 914 - performed by Mehmet K. Okonsar used as part of a creative commons license downloaded from the website Musopen.

This is such a good movie. Every single shot is a work of art. All the family members have their own arc on life and the meaning of it. From Yang-Yang taking pictures to NJ thinking about his past life, everyone is given the time to develop their experience on life and their attitude towards it. Like Mr Ota said "Why are we afraid of the first time? Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice. We're never afraid of getting up every morning. Why?" The Characters feel so real and down to earth. Great Review btw.

this movie touched my soul. all of life is in it. reminds me of a great 19th century french novel. yang has incorporated something of flaubert's concision, 'le mot juste', into the syntax of cinema. it is very fine and delicate stuff. very good.

This is a rare moment of synchronicity for me. I watched Yi Yi a couple days go for the fist time and I said the exact same thing about aliens. I click on this video randomly and I hear it said with the exact same phrasing I used lol Only goes to show how universal the movie is.

In general I would agree that Taipei is not a beautiful city but I would amend it by saying it's got some areas of beauty. I once went on a date in Taipei with an architect, I told her that the colonial Japanese era and the modern first world parts of Taipei are gorgeous and interesting. The KMT era buildings though, which is the majority of the city, are ugly AF. She agreed. I really need to find my dvd of this movie and watch it again.

can you review 'The terrorizers', '恐怖份子' ? I recently saw it in mubi and I felt in love with the director's vision. I can't seem to find Yi Yi online though... I wish you could do more reviews about the Taiwanese New Wave cinema, I really love all the background facts you give us, unknown to us outside Taiwan. Keep the good work 😊 !
