He definitely didn't deserve that kind of death. He wasn't a villain either. When they were fighting in the Sunshot Campaign everyone praised him or feared him. After the Wen's were defeated and he was no longer useful to them people turned against him for various reasons. Most of them were made up or exaggerated. Despite the bad reputation, he went to live on Burial Mounds together with the Wen remnants and willingly stood in that awful place not causing any trouble. In my opinion he only wanted to be left alone. He wasn't a bad guy. He indeed killed lots of people. At first, it was for revenge, for what the Wen's did to the former Jiang Sect. Then in the Nightless City he was already losing it after killing Jin ZiXuan (not intentionally). And to top it all Yanli died too because of him. And we know how important she is for him. People kept pushing him, blaming him. How much a person can take? I can't say he was suffering from paranoia either. He was just deeply hurt because all the stuff happening at once.

Himabinndu Juttadda I guess if you look at it from a spiritual viewpoint, when you mess with dark magic, it could turn you into an evil person. Wei Ying is a happy-go-lucky fellow who just want to live in peace, but they, the ones who did not like what he did, started to gang up on him.

Okay so here is my take. Wei Ying had the most pure intentions when taking on the resentful energy and the amulet. He only wanted to kill off the Wen clan and a lot of people supported him when he did. However when he started to speak out against the killings of innocent Wen Clan members more people turned on him once they saw how he was trying to save them. The Clans hated the power he used and resented him for it when he was trying to protect innocent Wen lives. But they had no problem turning a blind eye to their own soldiers killing them with not mercy. Yes he was warned about the evil power, however Wei Ying thought he could control it, much like addicts when they first start something. Wei Ying did not do what he did so he could rule the world. He did use the powers for his revenge against Wen Chao and his followers but besides that he was content living with the remnants of the Wen Clan. The longer he had the resentful energy and the amulet, the harder it was to control. We also see when he is in extreme distress the resentfulness is harder to control. Due to all his hardships which he does mainly push away and not talk about, the power only increased. I do not believe he deserved to die. I believe that while using the powers might've not been the best idea, I firmly believe anyone would jump at the opportunity to get revenge for the death of their family. I think he was a victim of power. Especially at the end. He knew that mostly everyone had left him. The Wen siblings were going to turn themselves in. Jiang Cheng no longer considered him part of the clan. Wen Ning killed his sisters husband. Even though he had Lan Zhan, he snapped. I think at that ending point, he wanted everyone to realize how he felt and he was angry. I am still not confident that he cared if that was his last night or not.
