I was actually at this event. As mentioned, it was to honor those who dedicate themselves to learn Torah, and the event was made by the largest Torah school in the US (perhaps the world). As such, that multi tiered dais that you commented on, held the cream of the crop of the American Litvishe Torah world, with some Israeli and Chassidishe rabbis seated there as well. As others have said, this is a prayer said on behalf of dead persons, and thus you would not expect to hear clapping afterwards. This singer is well known for spoken/sung ryhmes that have multiple layers of meaning. He's been hired by many prestigious Rabbi's entourages to sing these rhymes at moments of religious significance. (My personal favorite is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hd9xiq903K2YZI0.html - watched multiple times.) As well, he has a world class voice and is the son of a well known Israeli cantor.

It’s in Philadelphia. Majority of the participants are from Lakewood, NJ. It was an event to celebrate and acknowledge the dedication of the multitudes there and elsewhere who study Torah full-time in yeshiva post high-school.

This wouldn’t have clapping because it wasn’t a performance song. The words are a memorial for those who have passed on. It’s solemn.

That is also the reason why almost no instruments were there, cause it's more of a prayer than a regular song.

This is an event to honor Rabbis who are in rabbinical college. The many tables on the dais are the leadership of the most popular rabbinical colleges in the USA. This song is a commemoration to those killed in the holocaust and given its more somber nature is the reason why there was no clapping at the end of the song.

@@frizbeek7858 actually, there are at least three verses for the "keil molei rakhamim" for the specific cases - firs is the "individual" prayer with name mention of dead person, the second one is commemorating prayer for shoah victims with naming of concentratsion camps wich in fact much more generalising prayer than the first one, and the third in the newest - for the soldiers of IDF. And it's realy intresring that in these event used the classic verse of prayer with mention of rebbes.

He is the second greatest voice in Orthodox Jewish. His father is a well known Cantor. His name is Yisroel Adler. His father name is Chaim Adler. There is a clip on KZfaq Where they song together. And it’s magical. To circle back though. The greatest Orthodox Jewish voice is Nissim Saal.

I never saw this before! It's beautiful! No people would not clap. It's a solemn prayer said for the deceased. It's about G-d and the the souls of the deceased and giving charity in honir of their memory. This is recited at funeral services and grave sites as well as memorials. Very often Torah portion or Mushnayos (Talmud) is learned in honor and memory of the deceased in order to bring their souls to a higher level in their resting place near G-d. The concept is that as long as one is alive they can do good deeds to bring them more rights to rewards in the world to come but once someone has left the physical world he is no longer capable of collecting "zchutim". Then we people that are still alive can do good deeds in their honor.(Or studying the Torah in their honor) I hope that helps you understand the concepts here.

Your reactions to his runs and range crack me up! He does have quite strong control. This sort of recitation (doesn’t register as a song for me personally) is similar to how prayer services are led on the High Holidays in synagogues that have “cantor” style leaders of the prayers. Also appreciated your explanation of your accent saying cantor. I wondered why you always said it like you do, and it makes perfect sense! Very funny analogy of a surfer dude speaking Spanish with absolutely no Spanish accent lol. Keep up the great videos!!

This is a prayer (rather than a song) that is said to in memory of someone who has died. The text is generic, but from 6:43-6:57 (which you refer to as an interesting section) he is saying the names of two deceased rabbis, whose names also appear on the screen.

"Ola, komo estaws" 🤣🤣🤣 1) generally at these kind of events, the men you see sitting on the dais or at the head table are the leading Rabbis, Torah leaders and community leaders in attendance. 2) the song is actually a prayer said for the souls of those who have passed away. It is recited at funerals and sometimes at these public events they will recite it as well. The part that you caught that sounded a little different was actually when he was saying the names of those whom they were saying it for.

Not sure if you check comments from older videos, but this event (Adirei Hatorah - The "Mighty Ones" of Torah - an event to honor the commitment of those who dedicate their entire lives to studying Torah via studying in Kollel, as well as to show appreciation to those who assist financially) seems to be becoming an annual event and took place again this evening in the Wells Fargo center in Philadelphia. Almost had to be moved if the 76ers made it into the NBA Conference finals. Stay tuned for videos....the building was literally shaking.

Here is my prediction. The next time PortuguesePai goes to church, At the parts where everybody stands and the priest is saying something in Latin, He'll be shockling back-and-forth, wearing a fedora. And the next time he shows up for confession, Instead of kneeling, He'll hit the left side of his chest with his right hand the way we do. ( Assuming there's a video that covers that...... BTW we do not confess to other human beings, We confess directly to G-d. Of course it's true that sometimes someone may want to discuss something they did with a spiritual mentor or rabbi, To get advice on the next steps, But actual confessional act is directly to G-d)

Finally I got in early enough to help out with some of your questions. As to who sits up on the dais at these functions. It is usually reserved for the grand rabbis of various hasidic sects as well as the heads of various schools(roshei=heads hayeshiva=of the academies, known as yeshivas which is the plural of yeshiva=school or academy)of higher learning. Like all venues the more you pay for your seat in the audience the better seat you get. As for the song God full of mercy. Or as it is pronounced in Hebrew Eyl maleh rachamim, is a prayer for the deceased. It is usually recited at the end of a funeral to the tune to which is being sung at this event. The part approximately 7:10 on the video where they panned a video screen with some Hebrew and he ran through a bunch of words quickly was the names of 2 individuals who had previously passed on, in whose honor this event was taking place. Hope all this is helpful

Here’s a direct translation of the prayer recited; “Merciful God who dwells above, provide a sure rest on the wings of the Divine Presence, amongst the holy and pure who shine as brightly as the sky, [4] to the soul of (Hebrew name of deceased) daughter of (Hebrew name of her father), who has gone on to her eternity. For the sake of the charity which they gave to commemorate her soul, let her rest be in the Garden of Eden. Hence, the Merciful One will shade her forever with his wings, and will bind her in the bundle of life. The LORD is her heritage, and she shall rest peacefully on her bed. So let us say, Amen.” There’s no clapping due to this being a particularly solemn prayer recited in remembrance of deceased and to mourn their passing as well as inspire their souls so rise onto gods presence. It is usually sung with a somber tone and to inspire the feeling of the presence of the holy spirit of god. Having worked at such events as a audio technician and heard him live I can tell you this is a deeply spiritual experience and i considered it a privilege to be there.

This was awesome. I just came across another clip of Yisroel Adler together with Zanvil Weinberger just the other day and it was the first time I've ever heard of him. So beautiful. This is a prayer for the departed Holocaust survivors , often said by these large events . ( I'm not sure why , and would love to learn and know the reason , so if someone can chime in). There is one of Yitzchak Helfgot the cantor singing this prayer with the few remaining holocaust survivors at the siyum hashas. It's a very moving moment, since those elderly people shed tears for their family members who were lost and you can see how the cantor Yitzchak Helfgott stirs something deep in their hearts. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKhlrMR11b_Fpps.html

Clapping is often typical, but in this case the song was in memorium (the "speaking" part was him reading the names of the people that it was in memory of), so I guess they didn't clap because that would be making a statement that it's about the performer when it should be about the people it is in memory of. I'm not saying this as a Jewish thing in particular - this is just a general guess.
