If any game deserves an episode of Boss Rage, it's this one. The secret boss fight against Omega Rugal is definitely one of SNK's hardest bosses to date. Not only that, but to fight him you can't lose more than two rounds leading up to him, and losing against Rugal himself gives you a game over, forcing you to start over from scratch.

KOF2002UM is by far one of the top 5 best installments in the entire King of Fighters series. Bad-ass soundtrack, huge roster that has yet to be outclassed by any other KOF game, beautiful artwork by none other than Hiroaki Hashimoto, and gorgeous-looking stages that you could view in 3D if you had the Japanese PlayStation 2 version. KOF98UM (PS2 ver.) got ported to the PlayStation 4 last year, so hopefully the same happens for KOF2002UM.

KOF2002 actually has a very interesting story when it comes to its official release on Neo Geo systems-too long and drama-filled to get into here, but it’s worth looking up.

I got something for 2002, so I'll throw it in. Nothing fancy, but hopefully still interesting. - 2002 was Kusanagi's actual first appearance, not 2003. He was a secret character. - In the original 2002, you face a member of the NESTS team(Angel, K9999, Kula) in the sixth stage. Who you fought was determined by how many rounds you lost before getting there. OCVing every team will get you Kula, losing 1-2 rounds will get you K9999 and everything else gets you Angel. For UM, you fight them after the fourth stage and includes every other NESTS member+Kusanagi. This time, who you fight depends on how you finish the previous 4 stages. - Omega Rugal was the final boss of 2002. For UM, he was promoted to Secret Boss. The bosses of the NESTS saga replace him as the Final Boss. Which one you fight is solely determined by how you finish the last stage. The flashier the finish(Regular/Special, DM, SDM, MAX2) the higher up the hierachy the boss you fought was(Krizalid, C-Zero, Zero, Igniz) - Oh right, Rugal is a secret boss. How do you fight him? Just OCV the NESTS boss. What? Too hard? In Team mode, finishing with a DM will qualify you as well. You only get one shot at Rugal. Do the best you can. - K9999 was replaced by Nameless. He's gone. Accept it. - Aside from gaining MAX2s, all of the NESTS bosses also gained the ability to crouch. They could technically "crouch" already, but didn't have actual crouching sprites. They were likely given crouching sprites since they were planned to be playable in console versions anyway. SNK bosses not crouching is actually rather normal. - 2002UM brought everyone back that was playable in the NESTS saga, so why are Geese and Goenitz here as well? Those two were playable characters in the home version of 2002. That's the only reason they were brought back for UM.

DISCLAIMER: If you don't wanna read all this, then don't. lmao Seriously, no one's forcing you to. But since my comment on the 2001 vid has absolutely ZERO likes (likely because I posted it so late. T.T), I'll talk about what I have to talk about here! The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match is yet another remake of a Dream Match, much like KOF '98: Ultimate Match. Unlike KOF '98 UM, KOF 2002 UM is a MUCH bigger game that's practically treated as new for the most part! A *BRAND NEW* Soundtrack, somewhat new teams (though most of them are simply rearranged), new characters not seen in the original KOF 2002, a brand new character named...Nameless who replaces K9999 entirely, and many more! - The artwork is primarily done by Hiroaki who has done artwork for promotional material on KOF 2000 and KOF 2001, main artwork on KOF XI, and others. - The PS2 version of this game actually includes the original KOF 2002, much like how KOF '98 UM included the original KOF '98. Again, only on the PS2 version. - Geese Howard (plus his Nightmare version from Real Bout Special) and Goenitz appear in this game. They were not in the original KOF 2002, but they WERE in the Console versions in the game (alongside Orochi Iori and King; the latter one who wasn't in the original KOF 2002 and the former who's not in KOF 2002 UM at all) - Like KOF '98 and KOF '98 UM, KOF 2002 UM has Special Edit Teams that give out Special Edit Team Ending Screens and they are really fun to look at. Unlike last time, these are drawn in various different art styles by various different SNK artists like the main one of this game, Hiroaki, Eisuke Ogura, and others. - The newcomer to this game is Nameless, the replacement of K9999. His codename is Zhe Prime. He was designed with the idea of being a "ninja". More info about him down below. He (and the announcer to KOF 2002 UM) is voiced by DAISUKE ONO; the voice of Jotaro Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Silver the Hedgehog from Sonic among MANY others! - There is technically a story to this game unlike KOF '98/KOF 98 UM and it mostly involves newcomer Nameless. As I said in the 2001 video, I'd like to think that KOF 2002 UM is a "replacement" to KOF 2001's events given how it all works out. Anyway, Nameless is the 9999th "K' clone" and the sole survivor of "Project Zhe". He and other test subjects were victims of terrible experiments made by NESTS in attempt to control the Kusanagi Flames AND K's Flames (though K's flames came from Kyo, they apparently evolved to something he can call his own; sorta like Iori's corrupted flames, I suppose). Others exploded, burned alive, or were genetically mutated, by Nameless managed to survive despite nearly dying at least 180 times. As the sole survivor of the project, Nameless was given a custom-made glove to control the Kusanagi Flames; said glove was originally meant to be a replacement glove for K' but he turned traitor. For the final tests, Nameless was sent to Earth to test his abilities...and he accidentally kills a woman just by tapping her shoulder. NESTS deemed this a success and made him their assassin. However... - Nameless fell in love with a beautiful woman named Isolde who was part of the Anti-K' project (Which Kula is the result of). Nameless only survived his experiments because of his will to see her again and the same went for Isolde. NESTS noticed that Isolde's will increased whenever she saw Nameless, so they had them see each other from time to time to bring out their full potential. For Nameless to control the flames, he needed a strong will, and his will only increased with Isolde. Unfortunately, Isolde finally succumbed to the experimentation and died, but NESTS would not allow her progress to go to waste. Therefore, they incorporated her altered DNA into Nameless' custom-glove, keeping the Kusanagi Flames contained until needed which granted him better ability to control the combined Flames better than he ever had. Nameless is _only_ working for NESTS because he believes that they can possibly bring Isolde back from the dead. - Though Isolde is dead, likely as a result of her essence being merged into Nameless' custom-glove, she is seen as a spirit, especially in Nameless' super moves. If Nameless wins the match with this super move, a special win screen will show Nameless with Isolde in the background. She bares a striking resemblance to Kula Diamond...and it may be implied that Kula was possibly cloned from her. - With Nameless as the replacement of K9999, and the new canon SNK is trying to establish, the chances of K9999 coming back are NONE. In fact, people who have visited the revived SNK headquarters has shown that any mention to him is banned. A retcon actually happened so Angel's backstory is changed drastically. That does explain why she's escaping NESTS and authorities by herself in KOF: A New Beginning (a manga adapting KOF 14's events with twists and turns around). I suppose those clinging to the possibility of K9999 returning better let go now. XP Upon further research (more than I've already done), SNK has retconned KOF 2001's events like I had thought and Nameless is meant to be his replacement even though he has zero connections with Angel. - There are plenty of Mid-Bosses in this game and there are requirements to get them (And they're easy too). You will fight a Mid-Boss after every 4th Match. You may fight ONE of the members of the Kyo Clone Team (Kyo-1, Kyo-2, or Kusanagi), you may fight Angel or Foxy, you may fight Kula, or you may fight Nameless. The Kyo Clones are completely random on who you fight, same goes for Angel or Foxy, but the requirements to fight the respective teams are the same. For example, if you want to fight Angel/Foxy, you must end 2 matches with an SDM before you win 4 matches. If you want to fight Kula, you must end 2 matches with a MAX SDM. - There are multiple Final Boses in this game, from Krizalid, Clone Zero, Real Zero, and Igniz. Like the Mid-Bosses, they have requirements to fight them. For example, to fight Krizalid, you must win the 5th Match normally. No super moves or anything. To fight Igniz, you must win the 5th Match with a MAX 2 super. - Omega Rugal is a special boss in this game and this is the hardest Omega Rugal has ever been! The game even tells you to "Do the best you can!" (No joke). You only get ONE CHANCE to fight him. Lose and it's Game Over for you! His Stage is based on the one seen in the original KOF 2002...or rather the console port of KOF 2002 which had 3D Backgrounds. To fight Omega Rugal, you have two ways of doing so: Defeat a NESTS Boss with an SDM, a MAX SDM, or a MAX 2 or you can defeat the NEST Boss without losing once during the match. However, through both methods, you must not get a continue whatsoever during the Arcade Mode run. - This game is OOZING with background character cameos from various SNK properities; not just KOF! There's too many to name! (Examples include Kain and Tizoc from Garou, Franco Bash from Fatal Fury 3, Marco Rossi, Eri Kasamoto, & Fio Germi from Metal Slug, and so many more). In the Italy Stage (Fatal Fury and '97 Special Team Stage), you can find Touji Sakata (Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition) and Jubei Yamada (Fatal Fury 2/FFS) together in the stage...and as the rounds go on, they'll start beating the crap out of each other. lmao Aaaand... That's it. lol Also, Max did NOT play KOF 2003 all the way. He tried it out...and hated it the moment he realized Terry's moveset was like Garou's. lmao

You can unlock a secret boss fight in this game: -If you dont lose 2 rounds each fight (3v3) -And finish the boss with a super You fight Rugal, just 1 try

I've never played a KoF game, been watching your vids and holy shit, this game looks incredibly fast and amazing.

This game got me into fighting games and really gaming in general. I remember playing with some of my friends who were from Mexico, gave me a controller and said "Let's play some KoF 2k2 in Winkawaks" and the rest is history.

KOF 2002UM is the best KOF in my opinion. It is top 3, along with KOF 98 and XIII. The game has had the bad luck of going out in a dark time for fighting games. Then when it was released on Steam, time had already passed. If SNK gave support to the online as Capcom does with SF3, surely KOF2002UM would be a real success online. It has been very gratifying for me to see how in training Max was discovering all the mobility and possibilities that this game has.

One of the things I like about this game is many SNK characters from their various games have cameos in the background; there's at least two in almost every stage. On the first stage you can spot two of the guys from the sports team and the final boss of Fatal Fury: Dominated Mind, Hwa Jai, Richard Meyer, and Bob Wilson on the second stage, Duck King, Jubei (I think), Heavy D, and Alfred from Fatal Fury: Dominated Mind on the third stage, Saisyu Kusanagi and Chizuru on the fourth stage, Marco Rodriguez, Gato, and I'm pretty sure Lee Pai Long and Ryuhaku Todoh can be seen on the fifth stage. There's even more who don't show up in this video.

I always loved seeing my older brothers play this game, knowing that they were average now that i think about it. This game is hella hype af. Seeing the intro is sick, especially if you know the whole lore of this game. I wasn't surprised seeing Max struggle on Krizalid even though in this game from bosses, being the lowest threat and having the most kickass theme next to Omega Rugal. Still playing on goo goo ga ga baby difficultly so yeah. Still a sick game and my favorites on fighting games.

The REAL reason the original KOF 2002 was so popular was due most people playing a hacked version at the arcades which allowed them to have infinite power gauges and pick Omega Rugal... In other words, because ANYBODY could just wiggle and mash the controls and beat the game.

I just recently played kof 2002 for the first time a few days ago (on a modded ps classic no less lol) i was born in 74, so ive been playing kof for a very long time. Dont know how i missed this gem, with its gorgeous backgrounds, music, and animation. But damn im enjoying it now

Max you can play against Omega Rugal as a secret boss, but you'll have to beat the NESTS boss on your first try, with no continues, and finish them with a DM, SDM or MAX 2. Also, you cannot lose more than 2 rounds on the ENTIRE game. To fight each of the NESTS bosses you need the following: C. Zero - Finish fight 5 with a DM. Zero - Finish fight 5 with a SDM. Igniz -Finish fight 5 with a MAX 2. Krizalid - Finish fight 5 normally.

I really like the animations in this one. The fact that he runs is just neat, not just a little shuffle like Most fighting games

it always cracked me up how ingame everyone was awed by Kyos pyrokinesis, while in his own team there is a dude who can control electricity, many, many fighters can produce some kind of energy(even technically just brawlers like Terry), Joe can produce tornadoes by kicking, and Leona and her father can straight up use their hands as swords. EDIT: Does he look like a little chinless to anyone else in his winner character art?

look I've been a SNK fan before SNK was cool!! my first SNK fighting game I played was fatal fury 2 in 94 and fatal fury special!! I also love art of fighting and when Capcom vs SNK was first announced I practically creamed my pants!! I though finally 2 of the greatest fighting franchises would duke it out!! I'm really excited about Capcom announcing Street fighter vs Mortal Kombat!! i didn't think it would ever be possible but I'm so excited!!
