Yoke VS Stick. Boeing VS Airbus. What is better? Fly by wire or not?

Side Stick is used in the modern airplanes with fly by wire flight control system. As you probably know I fly B737NG and we have Yoke and control column and hydraulic boosters just to increase the pilot mechanical forse. I love flying the B737 without any fly by wire however I tried the the real Airbus Simulators of A320 and A330. I also liked the way you can fly the Airbus. You input less forses to control the airplane and it is quite easy, looks like video game. It is hard to deside what is better Yoke or Stick... But with the side stick pilots have more leg room, and tray table. I personally think that it is more comfortable...

Pilot Blog ... I always wondered if a flight simulator was ever used with pilots to replicate the doomed Malaysian flight that disappeared, complete with weather for that day and matching known clues on the trajectory. It could help reveal where it went and if pilot guidance was required at the end to leave the hull intact upon hitting the water (Scully did it on the Hudson river) or whether a flight on autopilot that ran out of fuel would have certainly smashed the cabin into lots of floating pieces. (I used to support as an engineer flight sims employed by Singer and then on the government side) second thing ... as a typical passenger, I see an issue that needs to be addressed ... manufacturers and Airlines and FAA need to convince the public on virus contagion safety. This is mainly regarding testing and verifying the cabin air will be virus free, but also seats, the magazines etc. , the toilet rooms, and the airports, the luggage handling ... i.e. comprehensive look at safety from infection. Ideally, the FAA would be involved in some kind of oversight role and then funding a Public Service Announcement advertising campaign. Otherwise, passengers will hesitate flying until many other passengers have demonstrated it is safe.

@@douginorlando6260 Hi there! Thank for that unique comment. I think the investigation team had followed many of scenarios including the full flight simulatior of MH 370 B777 loss. I personnaly trust them in their job. As for your second concern, I think the way we fly is going to change. However the air inside the airplane is quite safe even now. Air system filters are capable to filter 99,95 of what is contained in the cabin air. Plus air inside the airplane changes every 2-3 minutes, so if we speakabout the public transport, I think air transport will be the most safe. What manufecturers (Boeing, Airbus and others) probably would redisign is the filter change maintanence. For now you need to ground the airplane for several hours to perform the filter change, so that hits the airline budget. We need fast filter replacement as least in new airplanes. Also the big plus is that people spend less time together flying the airplanes (usually) compared to any other transport since airplanes are the fastest transport on planet. Also I think there is going to be new screening procedures in airports for passengers similar to secrity procedures. I agree that probably in short term (1-2 years) we will see the massive drop in passengers flight. But anyway, no one knows what it is going to be... Just need to wait... But I keep positive about the future of aviation. Thanks again for your comment!

The main thing that pilots have said is that while the yoke gives much better feel like driving a car, having a sidestick is more practical as allows them to use the space ahead of their seats to have a meal, use a keyboard or a tablet, see the displays better and just freely move around. A cool pair of heads in the cockpit however is far more important because those are what are ultimately flying the plane!!

Pilots should be flying the plane, not eating and checking their email. All a side stick does is allow for more opportunities for distraction. Yoke is superior when it comes to actually piloting an aircraft.
@asymsolutions
@asymsolutions 8 ай бұрын
@@literallyshaking8019 Okay Mr. never been in the cockpit. The eating part is because both mil and commercial a lot of the flights are long duration and pilots regardless of whether they are in a U-2, or a 737-NG (which has yokes) will eat and rehydrate if the flight is long enough to require it. Yokes just make that part messier. As far as the tablet part? They are not checking their Email. Those tablets are used for tracking flight plans, procedure checklists, in flight diagnostics, and reference for emergency procedures. Unless you are combatives, flying is 90% repetetive checking and rechecking of procedure and making sure the autopilot is doing it's job and 10% actually controlling the aircraft physically. Also if yoke was superior, the best performing aircraft. The reason for a mechanical center stick (which has the same benefits as yoke in connection) in sport is for cost cutting reasons only. The argument between Yoke and Side-stick is much like the argument between manual and DCT transmissions in cars. DCT is superior. It is faster, has less wear, less prone to user error due to human nature. Manual is obviously more fun to drive, but it's "connection" does not offer a benefit beyond it's negatives in weight, packaging, ergonomics and control. Especially when you consider that the majority of control "response" has nothing to do with the yoke/stick and everything to do with your inner ear. Which is based on your head and body movement overall. To be blunt, your arse is going to tell you a lot more about what an aircraft is doing than the mechanical fight of your yoke's flight controls. Especially in cable+hydrualic driven systems of the last yokes.

@@literallyshaking8019 What are you talking about. Thanks to side sticks, a right handed pilot can have lots of fun trying to coordination the plane with his left hand. This can be fun indeed. Plus, thanks to now having a nice roomy open area, the pilot and copilot can each relax their entire body, and drift off into a heavenly sleep. New technology, is the way to go. Like new control buttons that don't mechanically pop in and out to also physically indicate that their function is activated or deactivated. With the new method, only a light source, being on or off, would give such indications. Funny though, when this lack of data was lost due to a power failure, thus there was no light at the switch indicating its status, and this led to almost the loss of a plane load of peoples lives, they went back to the old school backup safety method that provided at least one of two indications of the switches status. Weird.

We were on an EasyJet A320 flight back from Copenhagen back in 2018. My wife is disabled so we had to wait for assistance, meaning we were last off the plane. Bless him, the captain saw us looking quite bored so he invited me to have a sit in the cockpit (captain's side). I asked him about the sidestick being on the left hand side and his reply was "You just get used to it" 😁 That, for me screamed confidence and competence 🧐 When I quizzed him about the ergonomics of it he said he preferred the side stick because it allowed for fingertip movements. You might want to kill me for saying this but after seeing Sully I felt more confident about flying in an A320 because the control of the aircraft looked more precise. I suppose with these times it's not really that different to having driver aids (ESP especially) so you can't just yank the wheel, Ace Ventura style and hope for the best. A very fine explanation, sir 👨‍✈️ (Edited for spelling)

AirFrance Airbus A330 crashed in the Atlantic Ocean because the Captain was not aware of the First Officer manipulating the sidestick while the Captain was trying to gain control of the aircraft with his own sidestick. Both sidesticks should move in unison.
@mthompson965
@mthompson965 3 жыл бұрын
That was fixed long ago. If you hold the Autopilot Disconnect (the red button) for 20-30sec, it disables the other sidestick. The sidesticks cannot move on their own, you move them and hope the plane responds. but if the Captain moved his stick, the First Officer's stick won't move (that's how all Airbus aircraft work). So it's like playing FlightSim with a joystick and getting no feedback.

So interesting as always! Thank you very much! It's fun that Boeing Captain votes for Airbus system and Airbus pilot (Sully) votes for Boeing. I saw one of his interviews, and he said that this unsynchronised side-stick system may cause misunderstanding between pilots in critical situations.
@PilotBlogDenys
@PilotBlogDenys 4 жыл бұрын
I heard that. The misunderstanding lies within the sidestick connection. They are not connected in Airbus, and it is not good. Some of the airplanes have the connected sticks and that eliminates the misunderstanding between pilots. That is why I like B737 Yoke. But somehow A320 is also safe airplane. Sidestick can provide more comfort for pilot and less efforts to fly the airplane (even a tiny thin girl can fly it). That is my personal opinion. Thanks for your comment!👍

I would not say Airbus is easy to control. My background before the Airbus was in the Dash 8 turboprops and I had a problem of over controlling the aircraft in my first simulator sessions in the A320. But the real trouble is when you have to fly raw data instrument approaches. Because the A320 in normal law is neutrally stable it would not seek the wings level position, if you leave the joystick even after say a 3 degree bank to correct for the localiser. It will keep banking at 3 degrees if you do not manually bring it wings level and the next thing you know you are deviating. That was weird for me. But with time, you get used to it. And also, when the control laws degrade, everything becomes a bit more difficult. You need a more hands on approach, compared to a conventional aircraft, if an Airbus let us say fall to a degraded law like the alternate law, followed by direct law. Once you gain experience in it, the aircraft is a joy to fly. I would not trade it for anything else. And also if you fly an Airbus you can fly another Airbus with a reduced training. For example, if you are rated on the A320 you can get trained to fly the A330 or A340 with just three simulator sessions and you can even fly mixed fleet (A320/A330 together).

I thought Boeing has ram air turbine. No one would dare to control a large aircraft with heavy wing loading just to move a slight angle in flight control surfaces on big wide aircrafts in cables only. It’s like doing pull ups and heavier than that as imagined. While smaller aircrafts powered by cable is okay but even Piper Seneca II is purely cable and manual and still it is heavy to pull your yoke because the whole stabilator will move unlike aircrafts whose elevator will move for pulling the yoke.

Hi Denys(spelling?); I have read, or heard, that some pilots feel that the 737 allows for, let's say, "non-standard" emergency situations, where you might need to do something well outside of normal procedures or right at, maybe outside, the edge of the flight envelope... Of course, the pilot is supposed to use his intelligence and skill to avoid such situations ;-) , but I've seen some stories of inverted flight, or other extreme maneuvers, to get out of some mechanical failure, or.... I guess that the Sidestick provides force feedback, and stall shaker, like your airplane. Interesting discussion... BTW, it seems strange to have the captain fly "left-handed", where right-handed people do not have as fine control? Thx, safe landings! And, best wishes for more safe landings in 2021 !

I think Airbus airplanes allow the pilots to manually degrade the automation from Normal Law to one of two Alternate Laws where the flight envelope protections are lost and the aircraft can then be flown in the manner you described. They can do so by manually switching off certain flight computer systems I think but I am not too sure.

I travel a lot by Air , I always love flying on an Airbus built aircraft ... specially the A380, A350 are the best aircrafts in the world today. 787 series ...dream liners are nice but cabin noise is more and built quality of boeing is poor compared to the new aircrafts Airbus produces ....

Best one is the stick in gliders, unless you didn´t forget to connect the control linkage during assembly and the "force feedback" control surface check ;( So preferably with automatic connections. Ahh, and the parallelogram control of DG300 is out of the game for me. Here´s a talk with Paulo Iscold and his Nixus Project, the first fly by wire glider :o kzfaq.info/get/bejne/is6Va8d_nNatpX0.html (Fly by wire system at 41:00) Scary thought for a Wright Brother/Otto Lilienthal fan. I vote for the KISS-Principle = Keep it stupid simple. Like the story of the Antonow AN-2 guiding in by russian technicians: All switches On, Antonow will fly. All switches Off, Antonow will not fly.

Although I am a 14 year old boy who wanted to become an Airbus A320 pilot, I prefer with Boeing Yoke. Because Yoke is easy to turn the plane right or left and pull up or push down. Airbus, their side stick in the F/O's side is easy while the captain needs more practice to be a professional at using the side stick. Right hand have more power than Left Hand. But with more practice, it will be easy. Thanks for the video Captain.

It's an interesting debate, even philosophical Americans or Brits would never have come up with the Airbus system, only the French or Germans or Swiss would idealize this way of flying If you look at our societies, the anglos are more into individualism, the French and Germans are more into systems I see this debate in other areas of life - for example, the French and Germans do things like public transport and health care better, they just do One of the reasons the UK left the EU was because their bureaucratic system just doesn't feel right, doesn't suit our culture Most pilots surely prefer Boeing, but they aren't building planes for pilots

Both design philosophies - Airbus and Boeing - have their pros and cons. One big disadvantage for the Airbus sidestick is in fact that both are not synchronised. Meaning, one pilot could pull, and the other could push on his’, whilst the computer will take the sum of it and remain neutral. On the other hand, it is not possible to yank the plane and cause damage to it because of a protection mode in the fly-by-wire software, which is an advantage. And to be fair, with your concerns about safety on an Airbus, I would feel just as safe - or better _unsafe_ - whilst sitting in a Boeing 787 (battery problems, which are barely solved). Also, comparing the newest production lines of short value aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, I rather sit in an A320neo than in a 737MAX for obvious reasons!
