The Ottoman Empire simultaneously put fear and awe into Europe. An Empire that lasted for over 600 years with a military machine that made other armies tremble for much of its history.
This series will cover the Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire, starting with its founder Osman I. His life shrouded in a combination of myth and few contemporary facts. We do know he lead his tribe and expanded their territory to include parts of the Byzantine Roman Empire. This is his story...and the story of the empire he founded.
In this part 2 we look at the Sultan Orhan and his rise after his father Osman's death. He would battle with the Byzantine Empire and drive them from the asian side of the divide. In the process he would lay the foundation for the Ottoman Empire.
Book Sources: "The Ottoman Empire and the World Around It" - Suraiya Faroqhi "Armies of the Ottoman Turks" - David Nicolle, Angus McBride "Ottoman Empire - The Rapid Rise and Fall of an Islamic Superpower" "A Monetary History of the Ottoman Empire" - Sevket Pamuk "The Ottoman Empire and Early Modern Europe" - Daniel Goffman

Thanks. Which is kind of funny considering you can pretty much pick any region and pick a time when its people did bad things...but the point of history to me is BOTH the good and bad...if it was all good zzzzzzzzzzz and if it was all bad it would be depressing. it belongs to all of us and we should treat it objectively and learn from it but hey that's just me maybe.

Thanks :) As for the other, I spoke of the town being surrounded by Beyliks...not by the troops. The troops I show are surrounding Nicomedia. I mention Philadelphia as it was the last Byzantine city remaining but landlocked :) It had no impact on the story of Orhan so I didn't show it.

14:32 That is not Castle of Çimpe/Τζύμπη as it writes on the map. It's Rodosçuk (modern day Tekirdağ). Çimpe is 100 km south of there near Gallipoli. And again i must say, it makes feel too bizarre when you mispronounce those Turkish names like Çanakkale. It's like "ch" in cheese or cheers, not like "c" in car or cable. With all due respect, that would be great if you somehow work on Turkish pronunciation before you start making videos.

Islamic yes Barbaric no. They were a lot more tolerant towards others than any European state at the time and for a very long time to come. I also wouldn't use the word destroyed, rather conquered and incorporated.
@YoreHistory

It's history...it's not present day. We should be able to analyze it with an open mind. I am Dutch/German and we know the history of Germany doesn't mean all the history was bad. Same with the Ottomans they developed technology that made cars that we know today possible ie...crankshafts/rack and pinion and a whole bunch more. They were no less or more "bad" than European powers. Take my Dutch side for example...the Dutch West India company made most of its money in the trans atlantic slave trade. History is history and it belongs to all of us to learn from so that past lessons are not repeated. Besides the Eastern Roman Empire and Balkan states weren't angels either :) That doesn't mean they are bad. It is why I love all history.

Barbaric? Hmm? Actually, they were rather progressive for their time. Tolerant if not supportive of other religions and cultures o the point where most of their administration and advisors were of those conquered groups and not Turkish save for the sultan and his sons...who were actually only half Turk because the mother's were from harems which consisted of women from annexed lands... Sort of a melting pot of sorts. As far as violence, terror, etc...nothing that all the powers of that time didn't engage in. Just saying
