We are spending 2 days in York, England, exploring historic sites, trying foods and drinks, and checking out the amazing things this city has to offer. We start our day at the York Minster, even climbing the tower to get the fantastic view from the top before heading to the Shambles, getting drinks at The Botanist, having afternoon tea at the famous Betty's tea room, grabbing a drink at a haunted pub (we later learned the alleged most haunted pub in York is actually the Golden Fleece). On our last day we check out the popular Ghost Merchants of York and get a Yorkshire Pudding wrap before heading on to Whitby.

Recommend Saltaire in West Yorkshire, it’s a World Heritage site and model village. Specifically recommend: Guided tour of the village, Salts Mill, Roberts Park, River Walk, Shipley Glen Tramway, Shipley Glen, lots of places to eat and drink, for example SALT Brewery. It is also a film location for many movies and TV programmes.

The wife and I spent 4 days in York last month and fell in love with it. We stayed at an outstanding little B&B ( Bishop and Bison ) booked through our wonderful tour company (McKinlay Kidd) and enjoyed our entire stay. We loved the old town and its shops and pubs. The minster is treasure not to be missed. The Yorkshire Dales is so beautiful you have to keep telling yourself that it is actually real.

As a York resident, I have to warn that they may be entertaining, but they are a poor way to learn the history. They are led by actors, and performing a script; they will admit that it necessarily has to be largely fictional or at least embellished. For those interested in the actual history of York though there are plenty of ways to explore it including The Jorvik Centre, Yorkshire Museum, Castle Museum Barley Hall, Fairfax House and many others.

It's a trail (the maps are available at the Cat Gallery, a super shop fir cat enthuiasts!), whereby you can wander through the city, finding the cats (not real ones!) On buildings throughout. Great way to see more of the city, too. Weirdly, we still haven't done it! York Minster is fantastic. You should check out the one in Ripon, too. I've lived in York for the past year and the roots of the city quickly found their way into my heart. Interesting to note that there was a Norman minster or church built aorund 1086, only about 20 years after the Norman conquest, and the current minster is built upon its foundations - hence the wide nave of the minster, as you commented on!

I went to Uni in York in the late 90s and loved it so much I stayed there for a few years. Some friends took me back as a surprise for my 40th and it didn't feel the same sadly. Homeless people, run down areas, graffiti, and a lot more commercialisation. Still nicer than most places though and maybe I was more oblivious to the negatives when I was younger and wide eyed. Nice to watch a tour guys, glad you liked it.

Given you just described a better version of York in the late 90s than the reality, you must have either been doing some incredible drugs, or just have been socially unaware. By 2000, York was one of the homeless capitols in the UK - graffiti was everywhere as the old decrepit buildings were yet to be torn down and replaced and it was always highly commercially focused.

Were you told how 'Shambles' got its (medieval) name? (It used to be where all the butchers lived, and they threw the bones and carcasses out the door toward the drain in the centre of the street) In fact so many of York's city centre streets ('gates') have names indicating what you would encounter there, eg: Swinegate - where you'd find the pig market Coppergate - where you'd go for the services of a cooper (barrel maker - the storage containers of that time) Monkgate - where the brethren hung out. Colliergate - charcoal makers/sellers Spurriergate - where you'd go for your spurs Jubbergate - where the Jews lived Deansgate - where the Dean lived (I'm guessing) Gillygate - where the church of St.Giles used to be (now a Salvation Army Citadel) Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate - where you'd go to get your whop-ma whipped. Grape Lane - err... ...umm ...don't ask. (Just DON'T)

Betty’s tea shop! Famous for their fat rascals. The cake recipe’s on line. A friend made me two as a treat just before I went into hospital. Unfortunately, he ran out of glacé cherries during covid lockdown so instead of two cherries as usual, there was only one on the top of the two cakes he gave me. I opened up the bag. I was a bit surprised at the sight, so I asked him, “Did you really mean to give a woman about to undergo breast surgery two cakes with one big red cherry on top?” Now they’re known as nipple cakes.

Ah, my home, born and grew up in York, my eldest Daughter went to Uni and they had their graduation ceremony in York Minster, apparently if you graduate at YM you can marry there too but there is a 20yr waiting list! Remember watching the YM on fire from across the City from my bedroom window in 1984, it was heart breaking and I cried and cried willing them to put it out and save York's most beautiful, historic jewel. A tip for anyone visiting York for the first time, to get to the Minster go down High Petergate (from Bootham Bar) when you get close to the end of High Petergate, stop, close your eyes then look up, takes your breath away.

Over the years it has become too touristy I guess and October/November visits are the best time to visit I feel. The history of The Shambles can bring, into sharp focus, what a gross and vile place that it once was…the hooks which you saw on many of the building attest to it’s real history! Really pleased that you both fell in love with my historic and breathtakingly beautiful County Town, York - the capital of 'God's own County' - and had a brilliant time there. Looking forward to your vlog on Whitby and I hope you got yourselves some Whitby Jet.

Lovely video guys - and York is my home city 🥰 so much more to see - fossgate is amazing as is a walk around the walls and visit to Cliffords Tower, but for one day you certainly saw and experienced a lot. I believe The Golden Fleece is actually the most haunted pub in York and is on Pavement at the far end of Shambles.

If you're heading over to Whitby, I recommend you go up to the Abbey at night (if the weathers good). It's atmospheric and absolutely stunning.

My uncle Buddy from the USA visited the Abbey in Whitby when he visited in the 80s. I drove them over to Scarborough because that's where they lived in the USA. Had the compulsory fish and chips and went to Whitby Abbey. He was taking photos of it with tears rolling down his face he said it would be with him the rest of his day's. We drove on and got to park as near to the Minster in York. We went inside the choir were singing he sat and listened. Someone from the Minster saw him and offered to show him round and invited him to stay for the service. He never forgot either visit bought a painting of both had them in his bedroom when he died 10 years later saying that is where his faith had been rescued. Funny really he was Catholic but never forgot these two places.

That is a lovely story and that it had such a profound impact on your uncle visiting these places which had resonance with the places that he had left back in the states. Also don’t forget in faith terms both Whitby Abbey and York Minster when they were built were for the worship of the Catholic faith. In terms of the former it would have survived to this day if Henry VIII had not split from Rome.

You were so lucky to have a clear and cloud free day for your clamber up Minster hill. Freeze frame at (4:14) and you can just make out (with some imagination) the Kilburn White Horse, 20 miles away in the distant hills (extreme top left of the panorama)

I was an studied Biochemistry at the York University from '91 to '94. It is an interesting city to be a resident in - sooo much gift shops, etc., but mainly because from Parliament St in the centre there are more than 365 pubs within 15 mins walk... and almost as many churches!
