When a person for whom music is everything says "That's why I gave up on music", it can only mean one thing - suicide. Yorushika made a story in their songs. Boy - Amy, girl - Elma. The songs are about them. This song is from boy's perspective. He was making music and that was everything to him, but he realised he doesn't have talent and that he can't survive doing music and it fills him with despair of not being able to do anything. At the end of this song, he decided to stop doing music, which was equivalent to giving up on his life. There is another song happening at the same time in story that explains why exactly he did this and how the girl reacts to this. The song is called *Nautilus* and it's totally beautiful. I recommend reacting to it soon as it will explain the story of this song nicely :)

@@Patrickmordi There are in-between songs like Hitchcock and Itte/Say it which are both related to this as well. Too bad I’m not qualified enough to explain since I haven’t spent enough time looking into it.

@@Nicopear Those are actually not officially part of the story. Author never said they are. There are two whole albums about this story tho.

@@Patrickmordi There's a lot of backstory to Elma and Amy. They released some texts; Letters Amy sent to Elma and a Diary written by Elma, and have two albums directly centered around the characters. Most of the older songs are also probably based heavily on the relationship but don't explicitly fall anywhere in the timeline and don't necessarily represent the characters' points of view but rather stories they came up with (similar to yorushika crafting the story of Elma and Amy instead of singing from their own points of view, it's possible some of these older connected songs are Amy and/or Elma doing the same), and they might've been written before the 'plot' was firmly set. Most of the Yorushika music videos make up the main songs in the continuity, with the super-confirmed ones being from Deep Indigo to Nautilus, but everything before can easily be read as related I think. The basic premise as I understand it is that Elma writes songs coping with Amy's suicide, then starts singing the songs Amy wrote in the time between him leaving and his death to get closer to him (which is the lore reason why all the songs are sung by the same singer even though many are written by the male character. Note that they use different 'I' pronouns in different songs, as well), with Nautilus being the last song he wrote ever (we see him title it right before he drinks the poison ink and jumps off the dock in that video). At some point after his death, she retraces his path through Sweden and finds the undisturbed dock where his guitar case and the lyrics to Nautilus still are. Say it references the clouds being high at night and the sky being blue as things that Elma can't explain but knows, while Clouds and the Ghost has Amy or a proto-Amy character respond posthumously, taking those as simple truths and telling her "So you see, it’s all right now ." This connects the two mini albums before the 2 big ones. There's also some imagery in the older songs that comes up again in the confirmed canon songs, like the Bus Stop is a huge part of the earlier songs and is showcased at the start of this video, also the train crossing sign. There's a sketchy part with some broken pillary rocks in Hitchcock, and in this video they walk past a rock formation in the same exact shape (1:30 in Hitchcock, 0:52 in That's why I gave up on Music. People take Elma's arm rising in this scene as evidence she wrote Hitchcock). This might represent Amy reflecting on music they've written in the past. One of the songs on the same album as Hitchcock is "A loser doesn't need an encore" and in the diary, Elma mentions Amy wrote a song calling himself a loser. Another song on that Album, Bakudanma, is from (proto?)-Elma's perspective and calls out the recipient of the song for disappearing without a word, which is how Amy left Elma for Europe and is depicted at the start of this song. Soyeah, the previous mini-album is definitely connected, it's debated as to exactly how. The one before that (with Say It) is more ambiguous. As for this music video in particular, i think the cinematography is great. At the end, only when she isn't following him anymore after he's spent all song blaming her in his head, he finally admits that he does care about all this stuff and that refusing to admit it is the real self-preservation mechanism, admitting that saying he just doesn't care about love and life and stuff was to avoid it. And that, despite being aware this is the case, he'd rather be knowingly wrong than delve into it. Just as a fun note, some people think the main singer of Plagiarism/singer of Thought Crime meets young Amy (or an alternate universe Amy) in that story cycle. Plagiarism uses a lot of motifs from other works (hence the name), including a lot from yorushika's pervious albums, so it would make sense for it to take place in the same universe, as the Plagiarist is stealing musical cues from Elma (who is singing Amy's songs as well as her own).

I've been trying to understand the meaning of the song and i dont know thats the title is metaphor. Cause i dont know it means suicide to musicians. So thank to this comment and suddenly the song became clearer to me.

🌱 "Yorushika" is a duo band of composer Mr. n-buna (Na-Bu-Na) and vocal Ms. suis(Su-I). The band name "Yorushika" is said to have been named after a part of the lyrics of the songs of their first album, "夜しか(Yorushika) - Only at night". Mr. n-buna is the same Vocalo-P as Mr. Kujira and Mr. Ayase, and is also a singer. It seems that the song he made is also provided to Vocaloid's "Hatsune Miku". He has been active as Yorushika since 2017 and made his major debut in 2019. Immediately after my debut, I started hearing the name, so I only recognized it as a popular band. Until now, I only listened to a part of the song and thought it was a beautiful singing voice. I hadn't listened to it carefully, so I was able to listen to all of the songs for the first time in Mr. Patrick's reaction video. Ms. suis's voice is very light and transparent, and Intro / Verse progresses. Then, from the Bridge, the voice became a strong voice with a core, and changed to a powerful singing voice with a clear intention in Chorus. Coupled with the story of the song, it was very comfortable. I realized again that this is a popular secret. In this way, it's a lot of fun to know the goodness of artists who haven't been willing to listen. Thank you!

There is the word "it feels bad" (気味が悪い(kimi ga warui) in Japense). ( 3:48 in this video) That just sounds like "because of you" (君が悪い(kimi ga warui) in Japanese). Lyrics of every Yorushika music are amazing!! That's Too Why I Love Yorushika

🌱 There is a song called "Haru Dorobou" released by Yorushika this month. If Mr. Patrick came to Japan's spring cherry blossom season before, this MV may be able to remind you of those memories. People don't want to miss that moment because the cherry blossoms only bloom for a very short period of time and scatter smoothly. However, in Japan, it can rain quite often only at this time. The phenomenon is called "flower-scattering rain (Hana Chirashi No Ame)," and the period is lyrically impressed from another aspect. This rain makes the life of the cherry blossoms even shorter, which makes them very sentimental. I really like the sentimental feelings and the beauty of the scattered cherry blossoms. Hopefully, in the silent drizzle, and the beauty of the fluttering cherry blossoms is indescribable. (No heavy rain! Only miserable!) If you like, please listen. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/id1hec-Y2sido2w.html

Loved your reaction. If you’re going to listen to more Yorushika, I would recommend “Deep indigo”, or “just a sunny day for you”; Both songs are a pretty good listen. I would also recommend listening to Mafumafu, his cover of Daoko’s “Fireworks” is absolutely breathtaking, he covers both the male and female segments of the song; his original song “dreams within a dream” is pretty good too. He actually writes and composes his original songs by himself, it’s well worth the listen. I would also recommend Wolpis Carter, his singing is a lot like mafumafu’s but his original songs, along with his covers are pretty amazing as well.
