People have enjoyed the tradition of camping in Yosemite for generations. However, getting a campsite in Yosemite is not always easy. Park Ranger Marea Ortiz gives an overview of what camping is like in Yosemite, and advice on how to get a campsite. For an audio described version of this video, go to • Camping in Yosemite (A...

I just got back from a trip here. Absolutely stunning. We came in on 3 motorcycles. They had no issue accomodating all 3 of us per one site. We didn't have any reservations rolling in either. Campsite availability was lottery based. The sooner you got there, the better your odds of landing one. Your odds of keeping the same site each day are slim, so each morning we would awaken at 6:30am to arrive at camp reservations at 7. (They open at 8am) to ensure we were first on the list for a cancellation we could quickly snag up. They were all in the valley at Lower, Upper or North Pines so moving wasn't a huge issue. Good luck to those traveling soon.

Absolutely one of the best National Parks to camp in, especially at Crane Flat. Crane Flats is located in the north-western region of the park. I've camped in the valley before, and there it feels as though your camping on top of each other. If you want privacy while still being within a 30 minute drive of the valley, I suggest Crane Flat.

I really love Yosemite and the people there are friendly and willing to work with you. My only pet pev would be all the camp fires burning at nite that makes for bad smokey air you can't escape at times due to the very very close campsites -make sure to close all your windows if possible. WARNING! Bear lockers in full sun quickly become extremely hot inside. Excellent ice chests and lots of ice are required to prevent spoiled food. Block ice lasts much longer. Ice in Yosemite Valley cost three times what it does outside the valley, and block ice has been scarce in the valley. You must plan for this! Consider making your own block ice at home.

Anyone familiar with the rv sites in Upper pines? Hi! I wanted to get a trailer that is 25' since i plan to frequent yosemite all year round but the rv trailer i really like is 28' :( In your opinion do you think there are any sites in upper pines that can NOT fit a 28' trailer?
@kathyj3584

as far as I know only in upper pines campground (if you are camping). I don't think dogs are allowed on trails or in other touristy areas...so if you are camping and bringing a dog be prepared to leave it with someone at the campground or in a trailer/rv while you explore. I may be wrong about some of this, so it's best to check the government website.

The main problem is that there are people who think it is okay to play horrible music on their portable devices. Fifteen years ago that would have been on boom boxes and such. I always think of the slogan "Keep Yosemite Wild" -- of course that is hardly possible in the Valley. My first time there I was surprised to see both a pizza parlor and an ice cream store. (How wild is that?)

Campgrounds in Yosemite Valley (Pines Campgrounds and Camp 4) are the only ones near bike paths. Valley campgrounds also have plenty of trails nearby, but that's also true of most campgrounds, especially Tuolumne Meadows. Getting a campsite is the most difficult part--it probably makes sense to accept any campsite you can find. Visit www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/camping.htm for more information.

How far off the trail do you need to get to avoid rangers and stealth (sorry, real) camp? I mean, if you have toilets, running water, a fire pit and car parking, it's not exactly camping... is it? In doing so, assuming you are strict with your food and waste drill, storing that 30ft downwind from your tent.... are bears a significant problem?
@similarteacher
@similarteacher 2 жыл бұрын
Bears in Yosemite are known to be quite problematic as many of them are used to people and their vehicles. If you want a more remote camping experience you can just go backpacking in the Yosemite wilderness area, it’s not like you need to be in a designated campsite you just need to be somewhere within a nautical mile of a road.

@djxbangoo
@djxbangoo 6 жыл бұрын
I think most National Parks allow backpackers to setup camp along the trail in the backcountry, but there are rules you'll need to follow and permits you'd have to obtain. There are also public lands that allow you to drive your off-road capable vehicle into the backcountry and allow dispersed camping in certain remote areas, (like Death Valley National Park) but each park and piece of public land has their own set of rules about these things so you'd have to do your research. There is also an inherent risk with entering and camping in remote areas so be sure that you are well prepared before attempting it!

If you want the typical freedoms that come with a camping trip then do not camp in Yosemite valley. Camping in the valley is just asking to get harassed by rangers. We actually had a ranger try to kick us out for "ignoring his orders" because we had charcoal burning. He tried to tell his buddies that we had a "large fire" (you aren't allowed to have a fire in the morning but charcoal is fine).

Too bad , the rangers at Yosemite don't tell people how many go missing in Yosemite under very mysterious circumstances are never found , read Missing 411 books by Dave Paulides . Yosemite is the worst national park for clusters of missing persons not attributed to simply getting lost or animals or accidents . Lots of missing children , one moment there on the trail with their family and the next moment gone forever , never to be found . What mysterious force is taking people of all age groups and experienced hikers as well who know these trails also go missing ?
