magic drop: teaching us how to deal with rejections

It is not auto-return. It is a fine yoyo if you are a beginner, or if you are interested in learning how to loop.

The Civility yoyo we are putting out in about a month (the yoyo used in this video) will be $90, but other than that I think the Genesis is about the best yoyo you can find in that price range for someone who is getting their first metal yoyo.

Metal yoyos are great if you are ready for them. If you are just getting started though, I would recommend you get the Luminator Advanced Kit which is the yoyo we use in most of our videos to teach tricks. I would only consider a metal yoyo if you are ready for unresponsive play.

If you are having problems with all the yoyos it is your throw, not the yoyos. You cannot find the civility because it is not out yet, we hope to make it available on YoTricks soon.

The overall width of the yoyo is normal for a wide yoyo with a smaller bearing. Compared to most size C bearing yoyos it may be slightly thinner, but still plenty wide for learning basic string tricks. I am not sure what you mean by "model type". If you go to the YoTricks website and checkout the Luminator page we have a 360 view of the yoyo so you can take a look at it.

We are working on a few concepts for a grinding video or two. Nothing is nailed down yet, but it they are in the works.

I would just like to say that these tutorials are awesome. I learn everything from these. I just started throwing about a month ago and when you stress practice for consonance you're right. I just keep repeating the video and then boom I got a trick once. Then again and again. Your vids have helped a ton and will continue to do so! Thank you for taking the time to make these for everyone.

After a few months, I finally got it lol. I needed to get better at keeping the yoyo stable when I first watched this. I watched this video again today and I got fairly easily. I've really been wanting to be able to do magic drop since it's part of other tricks. I'm glad I chose to go unresponsive upon picking up yoyoing again. I love how far yoyoing has come along.

What do you mean by the dismount? I am not sure if you mean the magic drop itself, the shockwave, or something else. Let me know and I will see if I can help you sort it out.

We will most likely use the Luminator for a few mor mid-range string tricks. Are there any you had in mind?

To those who are struggling: There are 2 things I had to eventually realize over the course of hours of practice to land the magic drop. 1. Make sure the yoyo barely clears your throwhand pointer finger If you go slo-mo at 4:55 and see it in x0.25 speed, you can see that the loop around the yoyo undoes itself resulting in a rejection. If the yoyo is high, this won't happen as the loop will stay on. In order to get the rejection, the yoyo has to barely clear your throwhand pointer finger. 2. Make sure your non-throwhand pointer finger is facing slightly downwards Out of the 2 strings, you have to land on the one closer to you. If you land on both strings, it's a bust and results in some weird kamikaze mount-looking thing. The thing is, the only thing separating these two strings is your pointer finger, so the gap is very small which makes it quite hard to land on only one string. To have even the slightest chance of landing only on the string close to you, you will have to angle your non-throwhand pointer finger slightly downwards so that the two strings would be separated horizontally for you to be able to land only on one string. If you have trouble landing only on the closer string, it may help to use one more finger on your non-throwhand to open up the gap between the 2 strings a little to ensure you land only on one string.

I have not tried that yoyo. Does it have a ball bearing? If not it will be difficult to do string tricks and it makes sense that you are having problems. If it does have a ball bearing I am not sure why it would be giving you that problem.

At this point we are not doing preorders. I suspect when we have them we will just make them available on the site instead of going through the whole pre-order thing. We will post an update on KZfaq to let everyone know when it is in, though.

What kind of yoyo are you using?

In that case it would be a butterfly style yoyo. There is an older version of the "Luminator" from the late 90s that was an imperial design. That yoyo is now called the Dominator.

The Peter Fish yoyos are great for getting into yoyo, but they are not the best for the more advanced tricks. That is why we are using the Civility for those tricks.

+Tommy Bidonde Chill Yswaggness To hit the back string you need to push your opposite hand forward as you do the rejection. If you are getting knots you may not be getting the string to reject.

Any decent metal yoyo will have a long spin time. The Civility seems to have an incredible one. Definitely a must have for intermediate players.

If it is between 1 great yoyo and 3 OK yoyos definitely go with 1 great yoyo, no questions about it. If you already know how to bind and you can afford it there is no disadvantage to getting something like the Genesis. (I would definitely recommend the Genesis over the 888!) If price is an issue you could always compromise and get a DV888 which is a great yoyo for under $45. We have it on YoTricks and if you live in the US you will get free shipping with that yoyo.

That throw is called the Breakaway, and we do have a video where we teach the Breakaway. Hopefully that will help.

I finally got it. I came to YoTricks cause you guys explain the trick more in depth then YoYoExpert does. But regardless for both videos I believe you guys should be a little more clear about which angle to place your hand for the actual ejection!

If you are having difficult hitting the closest string push your opposite hand forward a bit and point your opposite hand first finger down and to the outside. Of course, knowing what to do and being able to hit the trick are not the same thing :) I'm sure you will get it down in no time!

HUGE TIP: DO NOT MOVE YOUR THROWHAND AT ALL! KEEP IT IN ITS L SHAPE POINTED FAIRLY STRAIGHT LIKE A GUN, AND MAKE SURE THERE IS VERY LITTLE SPACE BETWEEN THE YOYO AND YOUR THROWHAND AS IT PASSES BY. Seriously, this helped me so much.

I posted a comment on your video. It looks like you are landing the yoyo on the front string, but to compete the trick you need to land the yoyo no the back string. This will set you up for the trick. To accomplish this all you need to do is push your opposite hand forward a bit so that the yoyo will land on the right string.

I have lubed the bearing on my Civility which does make it quiet.

The movement of the string is actually so fast that slomo doesn't help. If it did we would have added it. That is why we show what the strings look like when you hit the trick and when you miss it.

That is a very strange problem. Do you think you could upload a video so that I can take a look at what is happening? Nothing at all should be happening with the string on your opposite hand, so I also cannot see why it should end up with a twist.

hi..ive been trying to do this trick,and i think ive been doing everything exactly like adam has in the video but still not having any luck lol. i have the string on my throwhand ckose to the end of my pointer and swing the yoyo close to my pointer like he said and still not landing it?

I have found that twisting your non-throwhand while you roll over will help with the magic drop.

That is a rejection that we have not yet taught. I am not sure if it has a name yet.

Is this trick good with the Duncan metal drifter??

When you get into yoyos that cost that much they all sleep what I would call "long enough". That is, they sleep so long it no longer matters how long they sleep. The Genesis certainly fits that category. As far as grinds go you can thumb grind with it, and it does normal grinds as well as any other metal yoyo... way better than any plastic yoyo but not as well as a yoyo designed from the ground up for grinding.

How did you dismount from magic drop? Everytime I do it a green triangle forms

Ok I get it, get the string on the first phalange of the non-yoyo hand helps a lot to separate the strings. It was my error, now it's more easier.

The Metal Drifter should be fine for learning this trick.

have a question every time i land the yoyo properly in the magic drop position my non trowhand finger has the string twisted and can't figure out how it ends up like that and i can't go on to try out the shockwave because of that i looked over and over at the video and i never see that string twisted up when youdo it . so to clarify i two the yoyo over , i get the rejection it look beautiful but when i look at my non trow finger the string is not the same way i started , it's twisted

yotricks is there a way i can take apart a velocity yoyo so i can lube the bearing? ive been trying for a while and i cant seem to get it apart

After 4 hours I finally got it two times in succession! Its hard to grasp the idea of the rejection and the positioning of both your hands and the strings the yoyo has to land on. If anyone is still struggling, what i did was, when swinging the yoyo for the rejection, letting it float in the air for a split second allowed the yoyo to reject almost always, and then, with the help of my thumb on the other hand, landing it on the back string wasn´t so complicated. The shockwave is waaay easier, you need to understand where the yoyo has to land (btw, it can be done from a regular trapeze and you can practice it that way, right #yoyotricks?) anyway, very cool trick!

Hello Yotricks, Whenever i think i have landed it I've actually done a trapeze and brother. this is when i land on the inside string aswell as one the outside string the only difference being that 'his brother' is on the inside or outside. Got it. Finding it pretty easy to go from a Houdini to the Magic Drop. I want to go from the shockwave to a slack brother ninja vanish. We'll see.
