I wrote "You and I” about my partner Diana and our life together surviving and thriving through Chicago winters with our dear pug Nibby (who turned 15 this winter ❤️). It expresses the feeling of longing for a world where we everyone is free to live, not just hustle to survive. (Everything would, of course, be so much easier if we just shared the wealth of society equitably.)
But as we continue to struggle for that world -- and hustle in our own ways -- we also recognize how blessed we are every day. And we give thanks. So this is a song for all of us who use music to slow down and practice offering gratitude for having our basic needs met and for the simple pleasures and special relationships that keep us getting out of bed each morning to face another day in a world that is designed to make life so much harder than it should be. Singing it has always felt good for me, especially during mid-to-late winter (when Diana's birthday happens to fall).
May this song be medicine to help us hold a vision of what and who we truly are, and who will be when we are finally free.
